Legacy of Fire

Silver Crusade

Does anyone else think that the Sepid Div is seriously overpowered for a challenge rating 14 monster? My players have just run from the thing in Legacy of Fire after having been beat down quite severely. OK they were low on spells and resources but they barely scratched it.

The Sepid Div is wandering around with an AC of 36 (after casting Mage Armour), a 3/day 16d6 area effect attack, spells as a 13th level sorcerer, a DR of 10, SR of 22, a list of at will SLA's (including nondetection and greater teleport), immunity to fire and poison, resistance to cold and electricity, an ability to avoid ranged attacks and really decent attacks with a high critical modifier and lots of base damage.

Frankly I think he's tougher than Aberzjerax and that's a fricking dragon! Plus he's not foreshadowed and it is likely the PC's will blunder across him after a tough fight with some of the fire giants. He's a TPK waiting to happen...

The worst bit is that he can't be ignored. The only way through the darnoc is to pick up the deeds in the room beyond the div...

Does anyone else think that this guys power set is OTT? Or is it just me?

Just stated him up and, yeah, he looks deadly. Let's see, 16d6 rain is 56. That's going to kill the 12th level wizard right off the bat. Then fly up and disintegrate five times to kill off another couple PCs. Ice storm and fireball softens them up and then land and finish them off with the scimitar.

I'm guessing the saving point is that Memrach wants to escape the castle and doesn't seem overly interested in fighting. He's also barricaded in his room so he's likely to be alerted to the PCs before the fight starts.

Of course then we have the opposite problem: The PCs convince him they can help him escape so agrees to accompany the PCs. Now the monster cake-walks through the rest of the adventure slaying all the other creatures.

I may just drop this guy from the adventure.

He is kind of ridiculous for CR 14. The logic may be that since he is an outsider, he would be vulnerable to things like dismissal. Of course, he's got a 16 will...damn.

Dammit! Damn forums ate my post, and backtracking didn't work. They really need to toss the software they're using into the trash and use something better.

I won't repeat the comparison between the stats and what the table for monster creation says about CR 14, except that it's average or above average for everything. I think CR 14 is a bit too low. CR 15 might be a better fit.

So the question becomes: What to do with Memrach?

He's deadly, but is he psychopathic? Why would he fight the party if they give him no reason to? I'm thinking of Memrach as an intelligence test: if you have it, you will speak pretty words and back away swiftly.

Memrach will probably question the party about what they know about getting out of Bayt al-Bazan. He might threaten to kill them if they lie to him, but beyond that, why have him attack?

I am using him to abuse, stalk, harass, and threaten the players until they are in the upper levels for the book. At that point he will do something that *I* know will cheese off the players but is fitting for who and what Memrach is. It will probably lead to his death since the players are more level appropriate.

Unfortunately, my plans will not come to fruition until next year since two of the players are off an a round-the-world honeymoon.

What will he do? And why?

He is a VERY tough opponent! Our group of six entered there in pretty good shape but he flat out killed the Wizard by the third round and the group was trying to figure out how to flee when the barbarian got lucky enough to take him down. They were sweating it.
