Swapping Out Feats

Rules Questions

I've read a few comments about swapping out feats. Is there anything in the rules stating that feats can be traded out as a PC gains levels?

I can't seem to locate anything to support this being possible. I'd like to swap out some poor feat choices for a fighter, but we're trying to stick to RAW as much as possible.

RAW its not supported. Its the kind of thign you should talk to your DM about. Theres nothing too bad about feat swapping, but ensure it takes a significant amount of time and possibly gold so players aren't feat-switching whenever they feel like it. Also, watch out for feat switches of feats that are prequisites. If the dwarf decides to lose power attack but is still great cleaving, let the alarm bells ring.

Dark Archive

Actually, it is supported, at least for fighters.

A fighter can only change one feat at any given level and must choose whether or not to swap the feat at the time he gains a new bonus feat for the level.

By RAW (iirc) Fighters, and only Fighters, can swap out/retrain some feats.

Pag. 55 of the Core Rulebook
"Upon reaching 4th level, and every four levels
thereafter (8th, 12th, and so on), a fighter can choose
to learn a new bonus feat in place of a bonus feat he has
already learned. In effect, the f ighter loses the bonus
feat in exchange for the new one. The old feat cannot
be one that was used as a prerequisite for another feat,
prestige class, or other ability. A f ighter can only change
one feat at any given level and must choose whether or
not to swap the feat at the time he gains a new bonus feat
for the level."

IMO, if you are learning the game, a HouseRule that allows some kind of character modification after GM aproval would be ok.

Edit: Ninjas!

Thanks for the quick responses!

Sovereign Court

Forgot it was supported for fighters. My points still stand about every other class though :)

He He! Something like this in the current game and will for all future games.

Liberty's Edge

I know this is a really old thread, but if anyone has stumbled across this page, there are official retraining rules from Ultimate Campaign. You can find them at the D20PFSRD by clicking here.

Brawler can swap one of its bonus combat feats out too when it gets a new one just like the fighter can with its feats.
