Silver Crusade

If you buy a weapon or armor proficency feat and latter take a class
that has a calss ability that is the same as the feat that you took before can you retrain that feat?

No, you can't.

But your DM should allow you to do so if that feat isn't the prerequisite for another feat, class, PrC, etc.. Forcing players to think about all the feat choices for med and high levels at level 1 is far to harsh imo.

I allow it but I don't think there is anything in the rules that say you can.

I don't think you get the feat back either, but I would allow retraining of that feat without penalties since you have the feat twice.

No, you can´t retrain it. Unless your DM allows it.

But there are some class abilities that can be stack is you have a second class feature. For example A paladin with a presstige class that doesn't have lay on hands, the only levels that he counts for his lay on hands ability are the paladin levels. But if a paladin takes a prestige class with lay on hands class ability then he stacks his paladin levels plus his prestige class levels to determine the amount of Hit Points that he can heal.

I believe that the RAW (All Hail RAW), and it's slightly weaker but infinitely smarter cousin, RAI (Most Hail RAI), firmly support the interpretation that having the same armor proficiency twice permits you to wear two sets of the appropriate armor.

I further believe that having the same weapon proficiency twice permits you to wield two of the weapons at the same time, one with your hands and the other with a "non-traditional" body part.

Depending on which "non-traditional" body part you choose, surprise attacks are possible.

I shall now leave you with that imagery.

In my mind, I just saw someone fart a dart. Thank you for that.

You're Welcome. And may I add, "Thank you". Disturbing imagery is easy. Rhyming disturbing imagery show true talent. I predict a great future for you.

My house rule on retraining feats works like this:
Every winter (people traditionally did lots of their training/reading/etc during the winter in the period the game is vaguely based on), you can retrain one feat. If you're a fighter, you may retrain 2 feats (since the ability to do a little retraining is a fighter signature).
If you get your clocks cleaned seriously in a confrontation, and take a month at least to retrain (think nearly every martial arts movie ever made), you can retrain one feat, or 2 if you're a fighter. I generally allow people to 'rust' and retrain skills at similar intervals.
