Character concepts you NEVER played...

Gamer Life General Discussion

Have you ever had a character concept you never got to play, possibly out of fear of what your fellow gamers might think or without wanting to explain at length defending your idea?

I ask because I was thinking about a character style I've never got to play, but out of my own fears of what my gaming groups might think. The majority of these guys have been my best friends for going on 20 years, and I don't want them to misinterpret some ideas I have. Anyway, enough verbal tap dancing.

My example, is that I have had an inhibition to make a certain kind of character due to a simple joke that happened at the table one night, years ago. Our then-DM had bought Savage Species, and I was browsing through it, and happened across the charts in the back for anthropomorphic characters. I've pondered making a wolf character, but someone at the table piped up something along the lines of "is that chart for, like, Furries, or something? Ew, dude..."

I am not a Furry. I'm not really even into anthro stuff, other than when I was a kid back in the 80's and a big Ninja Turtles fan. But every time I think about making what is essentially a heroic, less hyena-looking Gnoll, that Furry joke springs to mind. If someone is a Furry, good for them, but I don't want to give my friends that impression since I am not one. I'm actually really into Native American spirit-totem ideas, spiritual shaman-type stuff, not cartoons with boobs.

So anyone else? Anything you are too worried to play as because of what your fellow gamers might think?

try a Rogue/Bard/Wizard... if you're keen on Roleplay, really clever, & a halfling, it's a hoot. It's also very scary, prone to mischief (2 accidental arsons IG so far, one near TPK & a chance to make friends with a insane but bored Copper Dragon...)

Dude, just play the character. If they're your friends, then they'll know your not a furry. And if they make fun of you for it, just put it into the character. (One TPK from Coup de Grace while they're sleeping should probably shut them up.) Besides, this character doesn't even sound like a furry. It sounds like a lycan, or a Druid. Or a Druid Lycan.......

Agreed.

Indeed.

Nothing wrong with your idea - it would be fine at my table and I dont even know anyone who'd even blink at it.

Why has your friend got furries on the mind anyway? or is that strictly between hi and his ISP? :p

That sounds like one of my favorite PCs of all time, which was essentially Don Karnage from TaleSpin with a different name.

My suggestion would be to make the character's personality the spotlight, rather than his physical form. Don't emphasize his fur or fangs or ears like you're reading from Twilight fanfic. Just make his actions and thoughts the main attraction and they won't think you're a Furry.

That's my two pennies.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I actually had a similar idea one time, but the group threatened to kill me if I made and played the character. LOL

An anthro-horse bard with a masterwork lute that is also a Club +1.

His name?

El Kabong!

Back when this all came up, we had seen some show on MTV about Furry culture and thought it was just the oddest thing, so that joke went around the table a bit for a few weeks. Bad timing to pick up Savage Species I guess lol.

Lycan! Thank you Sphen, that's what I was trying to say and had a brainfart, couldn't think of the word. But yeah, essentially the idea is a Lycan in hybrid form full time, with weapons and armor.

Thank you guys, I know I probably made way more out of it than it should've been, but every once in a while I get a brain-glitch and something that should be simple just doesn't work in my head, and I need to ask around if anyone is having the same "glitch".

I always wanted to do a party with two paladins, one a variant of freedom. One LG and one CG. Play them as Luke (LG) and Han (CG). I guess we would need a anthropomorphic ape fighter also (which I did play. Fun stuff not having a real language).

Liberty's Edge

I have a few character concepts I have wanted to try, but no DMs willing to allow them. They all have a similar (sub)theme.

1.) A human rogue who is part of a travelling freak show. His stage name is Jack Shyte. His main trick is eating almost anyhing. (His starting feats are Aberrant Blood and Scavenging Gullet from Lords of Madness 3.5.)

2.) A female human paladin under a curse that allows her to gain nourishment only from eating live animals (i.e. she has to catch it and bite into it while it is still wriggling). As part of the curse, her teeth all end in sharpened points (like shark's teeth), which makes her mouth very disconcerting to look at, especially when she smiles. She hides her face with a veil.

3.) An aventi (from Stormwrack 3.5), aberrant-bloodline sorcerer who has no knowledge of his past. He begins as neutral, and spends a lot of time trying to decide his true nature. Is he sahaugin-blood, or something worse, or is he something good (aventi).
