Does anyone know if they re-code these and optimize them for new systems? I tried to install Planescape last year on my Windows 7 box and it would not run. Would not.
I'm guessing it's now compatible since they list that system, but anyone know more details of what all they do?
I'm guessing that since the GOG download is a Gig large and the original was 650mb that they did something to it.

I'll confess that I still have these games on disk stored. I didn't know GOG existed, but it looks like they have made many of these games compatible with my new computer instead of having to try and DOS-Box them.
Very interesting. Thanks for pointing this place out, carborundum.

Sort of. What they do is have a 'wrapper' that is functionally similar to an optimized DOSBox setup for the game in question. In some cases there are minor code tweaks to the games themselves to make them more compatible, but overall that's it.

heh, wait till you guys get involved with the modding communities for these games. I play Baldur's Gate using the Baldur's Gate II system and have downloaded the NPC project which makes the Party NPCs talk to you just like in BGII
Baldur's Gate TUTU (to play 1 on 2's system)

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense, and suspected some kind of emulation program. Still, the fact that everything's in a neat package rather me having to make everything work from the cobbled pieces is good. :-)

All hail the Mechanus Cannon!
I still have my old discs for BG and Torment but I'm tempted to buy at least Torment anyway because it feels like spending on money on Torment is the most virtuous thing a gamer could do.
This this this this this.
I wonder if those numerous Baldur's Gate mods will be compatible with the new "packaging"...

I usually wait to deal with Silke until after I've finished the mines in Nashkel, that way the party is 2nd and/or 3rd level. She can't be higher than 5th...I've never seen her cast a third level spell more than once.
Oh, and try casting Command. Then she's a sitting duck for Minsc.

I think that's something I miss from 2nd ed...you really could be a group of 1st level characters and mung an enemy to death. I'm sure it could happen in 3.x/Pathfinder, but I never saw it as often as I did in 2nd ed.

Define mung, please.
I've tried google's define, but that didn't make any sense.
Then I've tried urban dictionary. Ugh! I don't recommend looking up mung there.

mashed until no good. In this case, just flinging 1st level characters at someone until they were just worn down by numbers.

First time I knew how awesome a computer game could be: I'd just left Candlekeep with Imoen in tow. Since I could have 6 ppl in the party I enlisted the halfling and mage outside. At the Inn to the north, picked up Jaheira and Khalid. Halfway to Bereghost I found out the hard way why you shouldn't have Zhents and Harpers in your party (I really didn't even know what the two groups were back then). My party members started yelling at each other and attacking each other. I tried to stop them then just sat back and started lmao.

I'd love if they managed to finish the IWG thing as playing BG2 with IWD2 rules would be neat. :) (Abbr. FTW)

It makes it possible to play BG1 with the BG2 engine.
See more here.

Tutu works very well with the GOG version of the Baldur's Gate games. You might want to check out 'EasyTutu' which takes the Tutu mod and sets up an easy installer for it and doesn't overwrite your original Baldur's Gate installation.
The above includes instructions on how to install it(though there isn't much too it) and some links to other mods that can be very nice. The 'De-Greenifier' is particularly nice since newer video cards can make water look green, and people have put a lot of work into the NPC project which gives the NPC's banter and gives friendship and romance options like later Bioware games.

Hm, I've actually never heard of a mod that does that Freehold, and doing a little google-fu all I found were people who asked if it had been done and other people pointing out it was too difficult because it would break a possible romance and a lot of dialog since other characters expect that to happen.
I'll keep my eyes out open since I've been going through the games anew and have been messing with various mods. If I see it somewhere I'll let you know.

When I read the title, I thought they had polished it up, bringing it up to date in regards to graphics and controls and all that, but it seems like it's the old game.
I'm trying to imagine how much work it would take to translate BALDUR'S GATE II by itself into a modern BioWare 3D-style title. Probably more than the work that went into MASS EFFECT 1-3, DRAGON AGE 1-2 and JADE EMPIRE combined. It'd also require a hard disk install measuring in the hundreds of gigabytes. It'd be mind-boggling.
I'm also not sure what you'd gain. Unlike 3D titles (and certainly not like the 7-8 year-old NEVERWINTER NIGHTS and even KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC), the 2D graphics of the BG series haven't really dated that much. Still packed with detail and looking gorgeous. Could be higher-res for today's monitors, of course, but still not too bad. The controls also still work really well, especially since you don't have to faff around with the 3D camera. If you play BG1 in the BG2 engine, using the Tutu mod, then that has the updated journal and map notation improvements that make playing the game a lot easier (not to mention the ammo and jewel containers).

It's been awhile since I checked on the status of the project, but I know a team of amateur developers were working on making a NWN2 module based on the original Baldur's Gate. IIRC, it took them at least a year just to get Candlekeep and major characters designed. Now, this was a group of people doing this in their spare time--a professional group doing nothing else would probably still get more done, but it was still a massive undertaking, and that with a comprehensive toolset with a lot of pre-programmed scripts ready for use.
ETA: Here's their demo, should anyone happen to have NWN2 installed, which is the Candlekeep Tutorial, essentially: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=NWN2ModulesEnglish.Detail&id=112

It looks like BALDUR'S GATE is going to be rerereleased. No hard info yet, but the smart money is on a high-res revamp of the original games, primarily for tablets and smartphones but hopefully for PC and Mac as well.
It looks like BioWare won't be involved, since they are now owned by EA, whilst Atari hold the licences to the BG and D&D games.

Same thing happened to me. Khalid was not only killed, but utterly destroyed (removed from party). I didn't bother to reload my last saved game. It's the best thing that could have happened to me: I get to keep Jaheira without having to hear Khalid's annoying voice. :)

I still remember one time I took too long to do Minsc's subquest and he went nuts on my party. I reloaded my save game and he did it again. I had to roll back to an earlier save and go find his subquest.
I did that once my first time through because I couldn't find the screen that had Jaheira in it. (The directions were pretty vague -- gnolls somewhere to the southwest, as I recall.) Then, I finally got there and was actually in the middle of combat with the gnolls holding Jaheira when he turns on me for not finding Jaheira fast enough! While we are literally standing twenty feet from her and fighting the gnolls we have to kill to get her. Freaking moron. I was screaming at the monitor, "She's right there! We're killing the gnolls right now!"
Had to reload from when I entered the screen and go straight to the pit before his timer ran down.
