Anubis

Homebrew and House Rules

I am currently running my players through an adventure that takes place mostly in the desert in a pseudo-Egyptian culture. With that in mind, I wanted to create a race of desert dwellers based on the Anubis. Here is my attempt. Let me know what you think.

Quote:

Anubis CR 1

XP 400

N Medium humanoid (anubis)

Init +2; Senses darkvision 60 ft.; Perception +7

Defense

AC 15, touch 12, flat-footed 13 (+2 armor, +2 Dexterity, +1 natural)

hp 9 (2d8)

Fort +0, Ref +5, Will +0

Offense

Speed 40 ft.

Melee khopesh +2 (1d8+1/19-20) and
bite -3 (1d4)

Ranged shortbow +3 (1d6/×3)

Statistics

Str 12, Dex 15, Con 10, Int 11, Wis 11, Cha 8

Base Atk +1; CMB +2; CMD 14

Feats Skill Focus (Survival)

Skills Perception +7, Stealth +7, Survival +7 Racial Modifiers Perception +2, Stealth +4

Languages Anubis

SQ desert weapons, jackal blood

Ecology

Environment warm plains or desert

Organization solitary, pair, hunting party (2–5 anubis and 1–2 dogs), band (10–100 adults plus 50% noncombatant children, 1 sergeant of 3rd level per 20 adults, 1 leader of 4th–6th level, and 5–8 dogs), or tribe (20–200 plus 1 sergeant of 3rd level per 20 adults, 1 or 2 lieutenants of 4th or 5th level, 1 leader of 6th–8th level, 7–12 dogs, and 4–7 riding dogs)

Treasure NPC Gear (leather armor, khopesh, shortbow with 20 arrows, other treasure)

Desert Weapons (Ex) An anubis is proficient in flails, heavy flails, scimitars, khopeshes and shortbows.

Jackal Blood (Ex) Due to their connection with the wily jackal, anubes gain a +2 racial bonus on saves against sleep effects, a +2 racial bonus to Perception and a +4 racial bonus to Stealth.

Not that it matters much for this open critique, but in my games these guys would also speak a language called "Dark Tongue" which is sort of the Common of the region to which they are native.

Not that it matters...

Works unless they are supposed to be pcs in which case they are a little better that standard. Mind if I steal??

It's not stealing if you ask for it.

The 3rd edition Fiend Folio has a Jackal Lord (CR 5 I think) and the jackalwere (CR 2 i think) if that helps you any.

They are essentially supposed to be on the same level as Gnolls. Does everything seem on level for a CR 1 to everyone else? And yes, you can steal it. If I didn't want it to be used, I wouldn't have posted it.

I think the jackalwere also made it into one of the Legacy of Fire AP issues.

Spoiler:
Edit: Yep, it was in Jackal's Price.

Not having Gnolls in my game, I use Gnolls as a 'Anubis' type race. I like the 'Desert weapon' idea.
