One, sometimes when I try to highlight a player or NPC name, the program essentially locks up. It gets stuck with the mouse having the barred circle icon Ø kinda like that.

I can see the program itself is still responsive behind that, but I can't click on anything, use esc or enter to get out, or anything of the sort, so I end up having to force quit.

I've seen this happen, though I've been unable to replicate it while testing. It generally happens when I have a lot of monsters at a time. Like 20 or so. I haven't seen it happen in later versions, though, so I'm hoping Kyle fixed it somewhere in there.

Zair wrote:

Second, when I export and/or import my custom monsters, it strips them of all their skills. Everything else is intact, but they have no skills left, which is a bit awkward.

Hard to do anything with that without having the file handy. I'd ask you to send it my way, for me to take a look, but it's been a while since Kyle showed up here so I'm unsure what the official state of the project is and if I'll be able to help at all...

Liberty's Edge

Love the program! I've made it a constant at my tables!

I have just one issue with it: several of my custom characters have their skills disappear after I add them in and close the program. When I open the program again and look at the custom block, the skills are gone. Any idea of what I can do?

Thank you so much for all this hard work!

First off, this program is pretty amazing and I'm happy that you've taken so much time to create it and keep it up to date. One thing I'm trying to do is use Combat Manager along side the beta of up and coming program that I'm also excited about. This program allows me to access external programs from within it by doing a bit of manipulation but essentially it relies on Windows to know what program to open by the file extension.

I've set Windows to open a .cmpt file (created earlier in Combat Manager and saved) with Combat Manager. However, when I attempt to access the file Combat Manager opens to a blank window. The same happens if I simply try to double click the .cmpt file from a Windows Explorer window so I think the behavior is more to do with Combat Manager than my beta software. If I open the .cmpt from within Combat Manager then it works fine. My guess is that Combat Manager doesn't know what side (party/monster) to open the .cmpt file into and therefore doesn't open it at all but that's simply a guess on my part. I also tried renaming a file to .cmet and get the same result when double clicking on it. It opens Combat Manager alright, but nothing in either side.

I'm new to Combat Manager so there could be something very simple that I'm missing. Does anyone have any ideas?

It's not set up, and no one has complained yet so I ignored it. I need to write a little bit of code to make it work, I'll put the feature on the todo list.

On a related note, it would be cool if Combat Manager on the iPad could be launched from other iPad apps, such as SkyDrive... Or on jail broken iPad's from within iFile. This use case is supported by HeroLab app. And folder support to organize files in the iPad app would also be good. And multi-select to open several files at once :)

Otherwise, great app, and I look forward to using it next session!

Not having a new version has been weighing heavily on me the past couple months. Sorry for the disappearing act. Here's the next version:

Combat Manager Update to 1.4.8:

Add simple user configurable HotKeys for die rolls
Check for updates on startup
Fix name, Space, Reach in HL imports
Improve attack string parsing (thanks to Jacob Proffitt)

CombatManager.com

I expect to update iPad in review this weekend. I still need a data update for PC and iPad.

Android version does some useful things now but is not ready for a Beta.

Hey, Running Vista and 4.8 looks awesome with the hotkeys option, but it's crashing on opening, and I had to go back to 4.7. I reloaded it repeatedly, but it's still giving me "Combat manager has crashed" box on opening.

Great program, I've donated repeatedly, love to have the hotkeys working for attacks and saves!

Lava Child wrote:

I'm having the same problem with Windows 7. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, to no avail. I was able to open it last night, define some hot keys, and even import a Hero Lab charater. But today, it apparently crashed after adding hot key definitions using the shift key. Ended up going back to 1.4.7

Delete C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Combat Manager\CombatHotKeys.xml and you should get this feature working again, but don't create hotkeys with only shift. I'll make a couple changes to fix this.

Kyle, it seems there is something wrong in the monsters DB.

1) In the monster/type of monster/ menu, there are 3 strange values:
-294)LE Outsider
-Alignement outsider
-Great wyrm Dungeon dragon

2) the "human" type lead to one single npc.

3) the 12-headed Hydra is probably misplaced in the npc db

----
There are also a few "bugs" that I wanted to report in the monster editor.
1) the skills don't sort in alphabetical order when you add them (unlike the feats, for exemple)
2) in some case you are allowed to add <line feed><carriage return> in the text box and sometime you can't. That's a pitty when you try to copy paste some info. (special abilities for example don't accept multi line copy/paste)
3) last: there is no way to edit/add a source to a monster/npc

tremendous work anyway !
thank you for that !

I think I may have recreated my Zip DLL problems.

Here is another small issue I just noticed but I think it was in older versions as well.

It appears that the "Combat Reflexes" is not being brought in for characters imported from Hero Labs.

Interesting.

Can you combatman@kyleolson.com the contents of the "C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Combat Manager" directory, and can you tell me if the file "IonicZipDll.dll" is in the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Kyle Olson\Combat Manager"?

I copied/paste the dll from on old install (on my previous hd) and the import is working now:)

Word to the wise, copy this file "IonicZipDll.dll" from here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Kyle Olson\Combat Manager before you install 1.4.9, then paste it into that folder after the install. This should take care of the crash when loading Hero Lab files. At least it did for me.

I'm not entirely sure why it happened, but with a little help from a friend I think I can tell when it's going to happen again. I'll have a build out today when I'm fairly certain it will install the dll properly, plus at least one other fix.

Cleanup Monster type list
Cleanup Spell School list fix

Okay, I know this one will sound silly...

Is there any quick and easy fix to allow things to be worth more than a billion XP? Right now, the monsters tab resets after hitting CR 44 (over a billion XP) and if you put any combination of creatures into the encounter panel that goes over that amount it crashes the whole thing.

We play at epic levels, meh...

*blushes*

It's no biggie if nothing can be done about it. Would just be a nice feature. It's nothing big or anything.

I've found the problem, and you should be safe to fight Vampire Tarrasque +20 HD (Adv +3) when I do another release.

OMG.

You, sir, deserve an award for Designer of the Year, nay, Designer of the Decade.

There need to be more of you in the gaming world. :D

I didn't imagine that it could be fixed or would be. You always continue to surprise me with the quality of your work, Kyle. Bravo!

Now it'll be easy to run a God-Fighting Campaign. XD Orcus down, more to go. ;) Thanks a ton, it'll be big fun.

Here's something you can try: Clear out all of the data in c:\users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Combat Manager

You might want to save all of the data somewhere else before trying this, if you have any custom monsters or spells you wish to keep.

Nope, fresh install a new machine. Press down on the mouse key and drag accross a play name (attempting to highlight), and it locks up every time.

Seems I'm not alone in this either, looking at the other comments.

There's definitely a problem with highlighting because it's mixed up with the drag and drop actions, but I can't make the app hang using highlighting right now.

Does the app hang if you try to drag an drop a character by dragging on an area outside of the name?

The ipad app has certainly made a tremendous difference when running encounters - and I'd second the call to have folder support if possible - I've currently got 3 intermittent games going on and it would be very useful to have separation of files -

Kyle this is an amazing program, definitely donating!

I've been digging around in this massive thread and I can't seem to find an exact "How-to" on formatting spell-like's, or spells to ensure linking functionality for both PCs and custom monsters. Any assistance would be appreciated!

There's no how-to on the spells. The short answer is that it has to very closely match the formatting seen in the Bestiary. I've tried to make it more lenient over time, but adding any line breaks is bad.

The long answer, for technical people, is six lines of Regex. All the code for Combat Manager is still available online at http://sourceforge.net/p/combatmanagerpf/ and the spell parsing code is in CombatManagerCore/SpellBlockInfo.cs.

hi, there, kyle.

I did some fixes, but I don't think I got to all of your issues. Can I get your files again? I'm not sure which ones they are in my samples folder.

How do you directly edit a .db file? I crashed Combat Manager by (I think) putting a long dash — not - in the spell-like abilities section of a new monster I made. Now it crashes whenever I try to select the monster, and I can't delete or edit it. I tried WordPad, NotePad, Works, Spreadsheet, Office, Excel, IE, pretty much every program I have. None of them can open the file right. I even tried to download that SQLite, but it didn't work either (not to mention I don't know how to use the damn thing). I can't for the life of me fix this.

As you inferred, it's a SQLite database. You can use the SQLite shell to edit the file at "C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Combat Manager\bestiary.db", but yeah, that's not really for the faint of heart.

If you'd like, you could try SQLite Administrator. It'll show you the file as a more traditional database app would, but still, it's not exactly user friendly.

I did try to reproduce the crash, but I couldn't. Either way, I'm sure Kyle will want a crack at it, but if you send the file to scott at scottandmichelle.net, I'll take a crack at it to see if I can get a patch to Kyle to fix the crash.

Oh, I already deleted it. I exported all but the broken monster, deleted the program completely, and did a clean install, then redid the monster without the offending mark.

I can tell you precisely how to recreate the problem though. Insert this line into the spell-like abilities section:

greater teleport (self plus 100 pounds of objects only—swallowed victims do not count against this 100 pounds)

The "em dash" is what caused it, of that I am certain. Once I redid the monster with everything but the em dash, it worked fine. If you'd like the whole thing I put into the box, here it is:

(CL 15th, concentration +15) At will-cloud of Taint (DC 21), deeper darkness, desecrate, doom (DC 18), telekinesis, greater teleport (self plus 100 pounds of objects only—swallowed victims do not count against this 100 pounds)

The em dash in the teleport did it. I used a regular dash only at the start after "At will" because I thought another one would screw up the format. Also, "cloud of taint" is in my spells database and works fine as it's on a half dozen other monsters.

DreamGoddessLindsey wrote:

You're right, but it turns out not to be just the em-dash. I'm able to repro it now, and I'll get a patch to Kyle for the next version.

Thanks for the detailed description, it really helped in this case.

Glad to be of service. Anything for my favorite Pathfinder helper program. :)

Kyle,
I have a quite erasy and (i think) usefull suggestion. Could you exchange the "roll init" and the "next turn" buttons places ?
After all, in one combat, you need to roll the initiative once but you need to push the "next turn" button several times. so the bigger button should go to the most frequently used funfunctionality (imho).

I suggest this because I cliked the wrong button twice(*) during the last game and the undo function don't work with the roll init :/

What do you think about ?

(*) (yeah, I know. I don't learn from my mistakes)

Liberty's Edge

Hello! I've been having an unfortunate problem. I finished creating a new custom monster from customizing an existing one. After I was finished, and then found it on the monster list to look at the numbers again the program crashed when I clicked on the monster. I closed the program and opened it again and clicked on the monster again to see its stats in the monster list and the program crashed again.

Deciding to take a different route, I opened the monster search on the combat tab and tried to simply add the monster to the combat. Clicking on the monster crashed the program. I tried to simply highlight the monster and click the add button to add it to the combat, the program crashed.

After this last attempt, upon trying to open the combat manager program the program did not open. The splash graphic that displays before the window opens showed itself, but the program just kept running in the background without the window appearing.

I uninstalled the combat manager, reinstalled it and the window will still not open.

What should I do?

Sounds like you ran into the em dash problem as well. Or something similar. You can either delete all the AppData files for Combat Manager and install fresh (an uninstall doesn't get rid of those files), or (if you can open Combat Manager somehow) export everythign you've made except the offending monster, do a fresh install, and import everything but the offending monster. Nothing to do but create it again.

Word of advice: if it's not on your keyboard as a button, don't use it. Second, make sure Spell-Like Abilities are done a very specific way since that will crash the thing faster than anything else. I'll let someone better at explaining explain the rules.

one question When the Bard sings an inspiring song for the rest of the PCs how do you add that +1 to attack +1 damage to the entire group? Is there a way to create area affects?

There's no way to create area effects or whole-party effects. The best option is to create a custom effect, multi-select the party, and apply to everybody. Of course, you'll have to keep track manually when your PCs get out of range and back into range of the effect.

It depends on what OS you are on.

Press WinKey+R
Type %APPDATA%
Go into the CombatManager Folder
