I used the PC version for the first time last week. We are starting the Kingmaker AP and I was able to pre-load a lot of encounters. I could even use CM to upgrade the monsters to suit a party of six. We use Hero Lab so we were able to drag and drop the PC files. It is great to be able to see the PC's details as well as the bad guys.

I give it 11 out of 10!

I also purchased the iPad version, although I may keep using the PC and keep the iPad for viewing PDFs.

One thing I noticed is that I was able to transfer the Hero Lab portfolio files (.por) and the encounter files (.cmcs) to the iPad via iTunes, but when I tried to open them, only the Hero Lab files appeared.

Is this perhaps because the encounter files are not compatible between the PC and iPad versions? Or have I missed something?

Thanks!

D'oh! For now I recommend exporting the cmpt files instead, and I'll see if I can get the cmcs files, which I totally forgot about, loading in the next version. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Dotting.

While I am here, is there a way (that I am missing) to add classes to monsters/NPCs, or especially PCs?

Twice I have installed v1.4.3 and both times the installer jacks up the menu item. I get an error saying "Incorrect parameter" and the icon is not the red die in the menu. The file works if I go to the folder and run it by hand so it has to do with the .lnk.

I'm working on Ultimate Equipment right now.

If any errors are found please let me know, chopswil at comcast dot net

I'll fix any error caused by me, all caps in item name, missing italics, etc.
Things like incorrect AC, incorrect gp value etc. will have to wait for an official errata.

I for one appreciate the work you do on the spell db as I pull that one down and stuff it into my own Access db and manipulate it into my own structure as well, using yours as the basis.

Oh... My... Gosh... Just ran my first session with the iPad app, and I loved it. There is a bit of a learning curve, but so far I'm impressed. I keep finding features that are awesome and help so much. Thank you.
I have a few questions / suggestions, but I'll email the questions and open tickets for the feature requests.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Any way we can get a filter for rulebook in the spells and feats? Some games only allow core.

For iPad I assume? Probably at some point. There's already a filter for the PC version

Recently I've been upping My monsters HP to max. It would be nice if there was a setting to do this automatically because now I have to calculate it by hand.

Further it might be a good idea to have HP set to some sort of percentage of possible HP. Although this seems less important.

It would also be nice if the initiative could be liked to the initiative in maptool. Probably not.

Is there a link explaining how I can import a por file from Hero Lab into the combat manager as I seem to be struggling with this.

Although my por files exist (I can see them when I open up explorer), I cannot see them when I try to import them via the Combat Manager.

I am running windows 7 and am running the program as an administrator.

What have I missed? Is there something I need to check?

Cheers

Hi,
Just wanted to say this app looks awesome.
I plan on using it for the first time in my game tonight.

I have a couple of questions though.

Is there a manual of document somewhere for using the iPad version of Combat Manager. It is mostly intuitive, but I'm having some difficulties using the attack creation wizard.

Is there any way to delete saved files?

Thanks

-Erich

Klumz, you don't have to import them. When you click on the "open" icon above either the character or monster tab you can navigate to where the por files are, and Combat Manager will read them.

Mended

Thank you very much. Obvious now, I was just not seeing it.

:) No problem.

Looks very cool so far and might prove to be very helpful in the future!

I am going to play around to learn all the important aspects.

Just one question (this might be how advancing works, and not your fault), if I pick an orc and pick simple template (advanced x3) and now the orc has 25 AC and do +11 2d4+7 damage, but has only 11hp.

Can someone tell me how to advance monsters via combat manager that is a bit more balanced overall? I know that it uses advancing monster mechanic, but I suck at that :(

Anyways, thanks for the app! :D

Edit: I will buy it on iPad! :D
Edit2: I just noticed that you can mix the different templates to advance a creature.

Hello, I just now saw this and I think it is a great program. I also saw that you have an IPad app out for it also. Do you have plans on making and Android version? I have an android tablet and I think this would rock when I run games the old fashion way (GM Screen, dice, pencil, and paper).

Thanks for all your work.

Hello, I just started using your program and I was putting all my NPC's and PC's into it and I was wondering if there was a way to make the feats and spells links like you did so I can just press it and it will tell me what it does?

Going to give this a run today during my game, overall it is exactly what I've been looking for.

One bug that I have run into has been during entering in members to the party and monster windows, if I click-drag to highlight the name the program freezes and I have to kill the process.

One feature that I can already tell you that I would like to see is a button/short-cut to make all members flat-footed.

I'll let you know how my first test run goes. Looks like great work so far.

Edit: I am running a 64 bit Windows 7 machine.

Looks fantastic. As soon as I get home, I'll try the iPad version out.

Thank you very much for sharing it.

It might have been mentioned before but....

I was trying to add the following to a creature's attacks

torch -2 (1d2+1 plus 1 fire)

It doesn't add the fire. I then looked up other creatures in the Beastiary that have fire. Take the Fire Giant. He is supposed to deal additional fire damage as well. When rolling these attacks, it does not add the extra damage.

Hello, thanks for the continued support and updates on this great program. I noticed that a feat that used to be in it is no longer there. Its the teamwork feat "Outflank" from the APG. Also, I'm showing double listings of most of the spells. Is that from an improper uninstalling of an old version? Is there a fix?

Thanks

I'll check out the feat and see what happened.

There's a problem with the spells data causing some doubling. I've got an improved version of the data but I haven't had the time I need to fix the application yet. September was a rough month :P Hopefully soon.

The Exchange

Finally bought a second monitor for the initiative list and generally it works really well.

There is one major problem I am having though. I like to see it so that the monsters are secret and have them displayed as question marks. However, when a creature is linked to another creature, it no longer appears as hidden. Could this be fixed please?

Hello!
Love the CM! It's really great and my games are much faster than they usually are.
Some questions have risen though that I can't seem to find the answers to.
Some monsters and NPCs have stuff in their statblocks that doesn't exist in the monster editor.
For example: A monk have their bonus AC written out (Monk +1, Wis +3) but in the editor this doesn't exist.
Likewise a dwarf have "+2 vs. poison, spells, and spell-like abilities" written after the saves in the stat block but in the editor this is not to be found. Is there someway to make changes to the stat blocks besides the monster editor or am i missing something?

Several of the UC feats that take up multiple paragons (eg, chokehold, defensive combat training, several of the style-based combat feats) have incomplete descriptions in the program, seemingly cut off midway through.

Edit: Oh, and for many NPCs in the dabatbase, the gear entry only lists their combat gear, not the rest of their possessions. Also, many of the newer NPC entries added to the NPC database don't list source.

I admit that I haven't looked too far into this, but is it possible to arrange groups of monsters into Initiative "blocks" -- so all the goblins go together, all the Wargs go together, and so forth. Its easy enough to just re-arrange them in the initiative tracker, but groupings would be helpful...

I've had the same problem, as have others. I do believe it's been posted about before, and I also believe it is on Kyle's "radar" for fixing. Not sure what a priority it is though. The typical fix is just to hide the monsters altogether. That way the players know when it's their turn, and when it's not their turn, they just know it's not their turn. ;)

You can already do that. Say you have Goblin #1 who you want to be the one whose initiative roll you want to go with. Click on Goblin #2, then hold shift and click on Goblin #N (N being the last goblin in the line of critters you want to follow Goblin #1). Right click, and then highlight iniative, and when the submenu pops up, highlight 'link initiative' and then click on Goblin #1.

I am sorry if this has already been asked and answered, but I would really like to know how I can add more skills to the skill list. I have searched this thread for a while now and am unable to find any information regarding this.

Thanks for this... a life saver it is

There's no way to do this (other than adding any random Knowledge or similar skill). I think you're the first person who ever asked. I'm not sure, off the top of my head, what work it would take.

Liberty's Edge

I absolutely loved this program but was only able to use if for a couple of months before I switched to a mac, I've been wondering if there is a mac version in the works, also needed to comment that I would be more than happy to pay for it if one were to come available.

One thing I'd like to see is all of the templates on the PFSRD when opening the monster advancer instead of just a couple or manually adding them to the creature itself. I talked to you before Kyle and you were thinking about doing it. If this could be done, it would save me sooo much time.

Kyle,

I have recently started using this program as part of my GM screen and I just wanted to say, "Thank you very much."

I'm running a 3.5 adventure in PF and up to this point, I have just been calculating CMB, CMD and running the monsters as written. I've eyeballed the needed skills (mostly perception). The party has been walking all over the encounters.

With your Combat Manager, I have been able to update the enemies to really be effective enemies that challenge the party. Now that I have also purchased Hero Lab, the updating process has become even easier! After this campaign, I will not run a 3.5 adventure for a long time (too much extra GM work at the front end), but I'll continue to use your fantastic program!

I've asked this as well, and I think that while it may be in the road map, its a LONG way off. Don't bother trying to use Wine either. The app is making calls that Wine has not included in its libraries. I have to Bootcamp my Macbook to run it. A pain, but considering how awesome the app is, well worth the bother. You might look into Virtual Box and go that route...

Nephelim wrote:

I'd be lying if I said it was on the roadmap anymore. I've got too many mobile platforms I'm looking at now. I may even have to do something about Win 8 one of these days. Virtual Box or similar is the best option.

Hello again. I'm playtesting a scimitar-wielding Magus with the Weapon Finess+Dancing Dervish feats. I notice that when the latter feat is added to the character, the scimitar isn't getting DEX for attack and damage bonuses instead of STR. I was able to fix the attack bonus part by changing the scimitar to a light blade weapon on the weapon chart (even though it isn't). So now the Weapon Finess feat recognizes the Scimitar and gives it the Dervish Dance's attack bonus from DEX, at least. I have to list a separate note about the damage bonus from DEX. I tried using the Manual Edit for the weapon, but it wasn't tracking spell bonuses and such well.

Also, Weapon Focus isn't adding to the attack bonus of any weapons. I guess it would be a bit much to expect you to have every weapon listed separately as a sub-catagory for that feat, as well as any other feat that is specific to a weapon, ie. Greater WF, etc.

Again, love the program. It's my favorite for playing PF.

Kyle,

I've got a bit of an emergency here, and I'm going to be emailing you a file. Hero Lab just updated their files, and any portfolio I've resaved under the new software can't open in Combat Manager. The error says Combat Manager can't read the file...

Help! I've got two sessions this Saturday, and it will be a lot more difficult for me to run without your handy software.

Thanks,
Mended

For everyone with a Mac, have you tried Parallels? I haven't used it for years (I'm a Windows user and was only using Macs at work), but it was pretty awesome: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/

I was worried about what that change would do :(

Yeah, word to the wise, if you use combat manager and Hero Lab, and you haven't updated to the new version yet, DON'T. It will render all of your .por files useless to Combat Manager.

Edit: Also, just so everyone is aware, Kyle knows about the problem but has not yet had time to work on a fix.

Lone Wolf Development

Just a quick note on the new Hero Lab portfolio format and Combat Manager. We sent Kyle (and other tool creators) a Beta version of Hero Lab with the new format three weeks ago so he could make the necessary adjustments to Combat Manager prior to our release.

The changes to the new file structure represent only a few hours of work from the standard custom output format we put into place over a year ago. To our knowledge, everyone has been using that standard XML format for a long time now. So we believed three weeks of lead time were plenty for everyone to integrate a few hours of changes.

My guess is that Kyle's been working on a new version of Combat Manager and something is taking longer than expected. I'm sure Kyle will chime in with an update shortly.

thanks for the heads up, guys.

Any word on a fix for this?

Might sound like a dumb question but I just caught up with new tech. I adore Combat Manager on my game table laptop; run every game with it. Will it also work on an Android tablet?

S'allright then, maybe in the future! Thanks for the answer!

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Sorry if I've been behind on reading posts here. I just discovered Google Reader or the Forum software wasn't alerting me to new posts. I thought no one was talking here.

I'll have a HeroLab fix out soon. Probably tomorrow or Sunday. The fix is done, I just need to update the data in the app. iPad will be delivered to the Apple at the same time, so probably 10 days more for review process.

Found a crash bug, adding the advanced template to the riding dog causes the latest version to crash.

I love this program, btw. Only thing I'd like to see is an easier way to add new feats for the monster advancer, adding HD does not also add space for additional feats.
