Help Building an Extradimensional Home

Advice

In a game I'm playing in I was gifted the unique oportunity to have an extradimensional home. Long story short, we saved a magical library and they offered us a boon. I chose a mobile home.

The details are pretty simple: I have a magical door knocker that I can attach to any surface, knock three times, and boom- extra dimensional home. The process takes up to a minute, so we don't have the option of using it in combat.

Inside the home it's designed like an elven atrium, with frosted glass walls that are illuminated with a magical representation of the outside sky based wherever I open the door. The floor square footage is approximately 128 5' tiles, which is equivalent to a 40' x 80' room. I was thinking something more circular, but you get the drift. 30' high ceilings are the max. Past that, I get to choose the details, including the layout.

Here were some of my ideas:

  • Magical leaf & vine servants standing about 2 foot tall, mechanically identical to the Unseen Servant spell.
  • Rooms seperated by trellises covered in vined fruits, and a clear spring in the center of the home for fresh water as the Create Food and Water spell.
  • Hanging lanterns with sparkling wisps of light, and tiny firefly-like dots of light that twinkle along the ceilings at night as per the Dancing Lights spell.
  • A temperate 72 degrees at all times, with a soft fire for cooking.
  • Shelves and chests for storing our goods.

My DM said that small magical effects were fine so long as they didn't provide a distinct mechanical advantage. He also told me that I could easily build this up with my own resources.

So, suggestions? Anything neat or cool that would work well to start, or anything I could add on to my extradimensional home? I'm buzzing with excitement, but I feel like I'm missing a lot of the opportunity to be had. I welcome any new ideas. Our party is roughly 11th level, and I'm the party wizard (who is in love with base building). I also have a good amount of monetary resources that I've yet to use.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you're describing an item with a permanent Mage's Magnificent Mansion on it. If you have a caster level to work with, that should give you an idea on what you have to work with as far as layout.

My favorite example was in the Strongholds guide.. there was a stronghold which had several well-disguised parts located on various planes with portals connecting each one. The Ranger in the group had her quarters in Elysium... for obvious reasons she never stayed long in them. :)

I assume that as the party wizard you'd want to lay out spaces for your lab and library with wards to keep out curious noses of course.

Basically, yes, though my DM was very specific about the size and the layout can be however I like it. I'm more interested in what I can put *in* it.

And yeah, I totally want a library and lab, though I'm not entirely sure that I can have that just yet. It's a great point to add on to, though.

Congratulations! You've just become the proud owner of your parties supply depot and treasure werehouse. See the equipment list in the Core rulebook? You want ten of everything.

Or not. But you've got the ultimate portable hole there, take advantage of it.

As for fluff? Cooking and sleeping areas. Heck, hire a few NPCs and carry around your own mobile inn. If you're a Cleric, or just want to get on your parties Cleric's good side, then this sounds like the perfect place for a traveling shrine.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Wow. This is better than 10 portal holes. Your character is now in a position to empty out every dungeon or BBEG lair you come across. Keep an eye out for flavor text describing large and expensive furnishings, workshops full of tools, arsenals full of weapons and armor, libraries full of books; they're all yours for the taking now. Enjoy!

I used to do this with a character who had a portable hole. I started collecting big gaudy thrones I came across; each lich, vampire lord or evil wizard BBEG invariably had one. I ended with six or seven of them eventually. And my personal 1500 tome library was my pride and joy. =P

I remember the Wizard in Nodwick having something like this. It's an absoltuely horrid rainy night and the party is putting up thier tents. The wizard's tent looks rather dumpy on the outside and the entire party is unaminous in rejecting his offer to share. He enters inside and we see that's essentially a magnificent mansion within.

I'd plan the layout as 2 or 3 wings from the front door. To the left is your personal wing, to the right a wing for guests (So they don't interrupt you) and straight from the door is a corridor for stuff.

Either that or seriously consider one big room with dividers unless you can remake the layout somehow. Its a fun magic item but you'll find that it fills up fast.

I've considered one overhear for my players just dunno a good way to give it to them
