Faovored Enemy bonuses are significant and shouldn't be available most of the time. Having maxed out Undead in Carrion Crown, Fire Outsiders in Legacy of Fire, Undead/Devils in Council of Thieves can really ruin the fun to other players who have no means to gain up to +8 to attack and damage ALL THE TIME (I'm not talking about some maxed out, hypothetical characters).

And this is best done by either suggesting to player that he doesn't max it out, but you help him out so that he chooses appropriate bonuses in moderation or by DMing campaign with lots of different creatures, like Kingmaker.

I'm playing a Ranger with Humans +2 and Giants +4 Favored enemies so far, and I didn't really use the giant one that much, up until certain point in 2nd chapter, when I laughed with glee becuase I got to enjoy it.

And that's what favored enemy should be, IMHO. Significant bonuses, but not all the time.
Dragonsong wrote:I think instant enemy is a useful spell and provides some of the the core rangers with a much needed way to "spread the hate around." I like the fact that it's an archetype that is solid enough that its not an auto-reject and would like to use it as an example of solid archetype construction going forward as some of them have been (Fairly or Not) seen as real duds.Charender wrote:I agree, guide is a great archtype, but I don't think that taking the guide archtype is a no-brainer decision.
