How to handle honest player mistakes

Shadow Lodge 5/5

I had an aha moment last night and realized one of the people I play with has some invalid stuff on their character sheet. I believe it was an honest mistake but they've already played several sessions with this (fairly significant) error on their sheets. It certainly wasn't malicious, it was an honest misreading of the rules is my belief.

What's the correct protocol for this? If it's a weapon or armor do you let them sell the magic version back? What if they've taken feats? How do you record all of this on the sheet if it's between scenarios? Inquiring minds want to know!

To GMs, this is why it's a good idea to review sheets before the session, even if they're level 2, 5, 10, or whatever. Sometimes even the best of us make mistakes that carry through for quite some time. If you have time, I'd strongly suggest doing so.

Scarab Sages

Could it go in the big box on the Chronicle sheet, where they list what they earned in the last scenario?

Something like "EDIT BY GM REF xxxx-xx: removed Item X as bought from wrong tier after scenario XX-XX, refunded xx GP"?

I believe that Snorter has a pretty good suggestion that makes sense.

It probably goes without saying to talk with the player before adjusting his chronicle so that he is not bindsided.

Just make sure this player knows there is something wrong and that it needs to be fixed before they get blindsided by a GM somewhere that is not lenient. After all, strictly by the rules, there would be only two choices: fix it or do not play that character again.

And what would be done to fix it really depends on the degree of the error. If their character is running round with some equipment they should not have been able to afford, then they lose the item and get the gold back they spent on it, or if it is something simple like they bought a +3 sword for the price of a +2, just adjust the sword they have to the correct plus. After all, the whole adding pluses and powers to swords, armor and shields can be confusing sometimes. Now, if they have an invalid feat because they do not have the prerequisite for it yet, you should downgrade the feat to the one that is missing and then when they get another feat, they can pick the one they originally wanted. If they picked something that is not legal for play in the PFS, then they lose it completely and have to pick something to replace it. If they picked a feat or trait that is not valid for their class or race, then again, they need to lose it and pick a replacement.

And I am not really sure if it needs to be noted anywhere, as the character sheet will be correct after the error is fixed. Just make sure that the info for the character in their online PFS profile is fixed as well. Once those are corrected, there is no evidence of the character ever having been invalid. But if you want to, just write on the character sheet itself that on such and such date, after the character had played through X scenarios, X error was discovered and fixed, and put the same note on the character profile. Then he should be good to go. :)
