Hi, James,

I remember that once, asomewhere on the forum you mentioned that you were testing (or maybe just considering) a feat for PFRPG what would let a character add their Dexterity modifier to their finessable weapon's melee damage and that it might make its way into a future PF publication.
I was wondering is that feat still in consideration or have you dropped the idea?

That would be Dervish Dance, from Inner Sea World Guide, I suspect. The other one I was fooling around with was too good and so it's not going anywhere.

I guess being able to use your Dex for AC, Attack and Damage was too much, then?

While we're at it, does Dervish dance work if you wield another weapon in your off-hand? And if that weapon is a scimitar too, would it work for both scimitars, or does the off-hand have to be free?

Exactly. And that was driven home by the fact that once I introduced the feat, everyone took it and a few players were all "I wanna rebuild my character for that feat." Too good.

Dervish Dance does not work if you wield a weapon in your off hand (see the last sentence of the feat description). It's very much meant to be a feat to bolster the one-weapon build, which is, in my opinion, pretty neglected. It's ALSO meant to benefit clerics, bards, and other spellcasters of Sarenrae in particular, who'll want their off hand free for spellcasting anyway.

1) No.

4) If by "a zero-HD race that has construct features," then absolutely. Stay tuned. If by "a zero-HD race that has similar or identical rules as the warforged," then no.

1) Wait a minute, no pocket watches in Golarion? I was under the impression that at least some nations are easily developed enough; I thought Absalom easily had such things.

This new information struck a serious blow to an adventure idea of mine (that is Alice in Wonderland, in the Inner Sea, on an island where a part the feywild somehow overlaps with the material plane; Desna would be involved somehow).

4) A player of mine wanted to play a living construct type character. I wonder how soon that will happen.

Nope. It's just the picture we commissioned for the anti-paladin.

If it were an iconic, we would have had Wayne Reynolds illustrate it and it would have been in its own section up at the front with the base classes.

That's a shame, I like Wayne's art; but Paizo has a few artists I like much better. Wayne's females are good, but his males have always been meh to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong. While there aren't pocket watches, there are numerous clocks of various types (traditional, sun dials, water clocks, magic clocks, etc.) depending on where you are in Golarion, no?

Constructs using intelligent item rules?

Constructs remotely controlled using golem master's headband?

The 'pocket watch' was developed in the early 1600s... and that's for an extreme luxury item which wouldn't keep proper time while you were traveling. You'd have to wait until the mid 1700s for a clock which didn't vary significantly with local pressure and temperature.

The Technic league might have found something that could pass, but I don't see anything suggesting modern timepieces are mass produced anywhere on Golarion.

There ARE mechanical clocks on Golarion—things like clocktowers exist. There might even be grandfather clocks... but much smaller than that... at this point that puts things into the realm of clockworks—which ALSO exist, but not to any significant extent.

You could certainly have a clockwork pocket watch, but such an item would be on par with a magic item in its rarity. AKA not something that you see on every aristocrat in town.

Again... it's not a question of "can such an item be made?" You can make clockwork songbirds and helms of brilliance and apparatusses of the crab and iron golems and more in Pathfinder, so OBVIOUSLY you can make something that's essentially a pocketwatch.

They're too anachronistic for my tastes to be anything you'd see for sale in a typical store is all. You'd be just as likely to find a ring of evasion or a mask of the skull or some other magic item as you would a pocketwatch.

Further... there's no cultural push to have pocket watches expand in use anywhere in Golarion. It's not really something that folks are interested in, except perhaps on the tiniest scale as regards tinkerers and the like, who are probably more interested in building clockwork toys or whatever than they are pocketwatches.

Put another way—until there's an adventure that would benefit from having an NPC with a pocketwatch, don't expect to see any pop up in a Golarion book.

I see where you are coming from, but it clashes with the importance of portable time-keepers in navigation and cartography. If Golarion has accurate portable time-pieces then presumably someone would figure out that; 24 hours (or however long a Golarion day is) / 360 degrees = 15 minutes per degree of longitude. Ergo, by comparing the local time (as measured at noon, sunrise, or sunset) to a portable timepiece set to the time of a known location you can determine what your longitude is relative to that location... which is how accurate long distance navigation and map-making were developed in our own history.

Some people get upset that there are a few 14th+ century firearms in Golarion. 16th+ century pocket watches are a bit too modern for most gamer's tastes. (Despite the seeming love of steampunk, which is 19th century, go figure.) I'm not one that cares that much.

Speaking of your adventure idea, have you seen The Harrowing? It definitely has an Alice in Wonderland feel to it.

If we're going to take that into account, we also have to remember that it wasn't until the 18th century that someone was able to produce a clock that kept time accurately enough to be of any help in determining longitude anywhere near a useful degree.

You don't need pocketwatches to calculate time, though. I suspect "know time" would be an appropriate cantrip were the need for such an effect ever to come about.

It's possible, but unlikely.

Hey James, I saw a thread about bleed damage in the Rules forum. To sum it up, it became a discussion on what exactly heals Bleed damage. The Bleed ability specifically says it requires a DC 15 Heal check, or a spell that heals hp.

Per RAW, that means abilities like Wholeness of Body, Lay on Hands, or even Channel Energy do not stop Bleed damage as they are neither a DC 15 Heal check, or a spell that heals hp.

This concerns me as our local Hobby Store has begun getting into PFS and they tend to ask my advice on rule interpretations that aren't specifically called out in the Erratas, FAQs, or the book.

My question is, do I have to enforce the RAW that only a DC 15 Heal check or spell stops Bleed damage, or should I allow the other effects, like Fast Healing, Regeneration, Lay on Hands, Channel Energy etc. to stop Bleed damage?

So I was reading through my shiny new copy of the Adventurer's Armory and I just wanted to say that I thought that Equipment Tricks looked really cool!

However, I was reading through the description and it says something along the lines of "choose a type of equipment such as rope, boot blade, heavy scabbard, etc." and then states you can use Equipment Tricks that relate to that piece of equipment. Well, the section has two types of equipment ... but nothing else (heavy scabbard and shield, I think).

So, how likely are we to see any of the new subsystems introduced in this book again (such as the Channel Foci, Power Components, Equipment Tricks, etc.)? Ultimate Equipment seems like a good place to have them ....

If we're not going to see things like this again, do you have any tips on balancing them for a DM who wants to add more to the system?

Anything that heals hit point damage stops bleed damage.

Not only does that match the rules as intended, it's simple to remember. And there's NO GOOD REASON why cure light wounds should be able to stop bleed damage when a potion of cure light wounds (also not a spell) won't do the same thing. Or fast healing or channel energy or anything else.

If it heals hp damage, it stops all bleed effects.

1) So, the concept of a mechanical apparatus that measures time exists in Golarion? Only there is no inclination in miniaturization, so there are no pocket watches because of that, right? If there were pocket watches, is it reasonable to suppose that they are of same rarity as wayfinders?

2) When I say "warforged" I really don't care about the rules. I am much more interested in fluff. So, I am interested in some kind of humanoid intelligent 0 HD construct, that vaguely looks like a human in a suit of armor, and is not a clockwork creature. Are there any chances of something like that? (I am not trying to be rude or preasure you, so if you do not want to answer that for any reason, please don't.)

3) What are your thoughts concerning Living Spells from Eberron? Do you like that as an idea?

4) When will we see some support for Gunslinger class? Especially in the form of magic fire arms.

Not to contradict you James, but there is currently a quite affordable (for nobles and adventurers) pocket watch in the Adventurer's Armory.

3) An interesting idea that perhaps would have benefited from not being a template.

Well then. Nevermind.

(Turns out I'm not only not able to read every thing we produce, but nor am I able to apparently Creatively Direct everything we produce.)

As for consecutive modules... no plans at this point. That's more the job of the Adventure Path. We don't do enough modules and they don't come out often enough to limit their usefulness by tying them together in series that often.

That kind of makes me sad. I don't mind if stuff pops up in the Campaign Setting line because I find those books interesting, but it drives me crazy when rules or new mechanics pops into the Adventure Paths. : / Hopefully those tricks get reprinted / complied somewhere else.

Note that I don't mind when new Monsters are introduced into a new Adventure Path. I think that's an awesome place for new monsters and the Bestiaries consistently have reprinted monsters in them. A LOT of things that launched in an Adventure Path have been picked up for hardcovers—chase rules, haunts, LOTS of monsters, traits, magic items, and so on. We'll still be introducing new rules content in every Adventure Path as we need and want to support the adventure's needs... but I'm 99% sure we've not yet done any new equipment tricks in an AP yet.

The APs themselves though will continue being a place for us to try out new rules... because, honestly, it's a great place to do that.

Lovecraft and Howard were friends; although then never met in person, they corresponded quite heavily via letters and were big fans of each other's writing, and often chatted about writing and other topics in long letters. They also used each other's inventions now and then in their writing, and in doing so (along with other writers like Clark Ashton Smith, Fritz Leiber, Robert Bloch, and others) sort of worked on a "shared universe" of similar themes which built a mythos much larger than any one of them could have created.

1) We did rules for fleshwarping in Pathfinder #16 and a little bit more in Inner Sea Magic... no plans at this point to go much more into the topic.

2) Interesting, but a little too weird to be things I'd like to see be commonplace. We have things like this in Pathifner though... one of the characters in the very first Pathifnder AP adventure had what was essentially a demonic hand (rules for demonic grafts appear in "Book of the Damned: Lords of Chaos.").

3) "Dark Red" is indeed like Red Sonja's hair. Alaznist, the Runelord of Wrath, is the best example of a red-headded Azlanti at this point.

4) I suppose so.

require a concentration check (DC 15 + level of the spell) when:

1) Hovering
2) Moving less than half speed
3) Moving at half or greater speed

Appreciate your time.

Why would it?

Remember back in Second Darkness and Legacy of Fire, when you used to put the mini-adventures in the back of the book? My group always really enjoyed those, and it was nice to have a little extra something in case we were behind on XP. Is there a chance that we'll see mini-adventures in future APs, or have you at Paizo decided you don't like them?

Speaking of Tom Rex, is he working up any new scoops?

Actaully, it was feedback from customers who didn't like them that ultimately convinced us to stop doing those. They were a significant amount of work as well, and getting them to sync up better with the AP itself was VERY difficult.

Glad you liked them... but in the end... the customer reaction + the fact that doing 3 support articles is too much extra work on an already clogged monthly schedule as compared to doing just 2 support articles was pretty much a death sentence.
