i've a question about "Immediate Actions"

a creature flat-footed cannot takes immediate action, cause it cannot "react to a blow".

so a creature has to be able to "see" an enemy to beneficiate from an immediate action?

for example:

>No surprise/first round<

a rogue using stealth (beating the mage perception) shoot a dart from his crossbow to the mage for a sneak attack

would the mage be allowed to use "Emergency Force Sphere" to interrupt the attack?

Thank you, and keep up with the great work!

Sorry to auto-quoting, cannot edit the post and i noticied that my question was not clear enough:

> the scene is happening not during surprire round, or the first round

> what if the Mage is totally unaware of the Rogue?
> and if the Mage is simply aware of presence?

Thanks!

No.
Because...?

Because of the countless stories I've read and seen and watched, whenever this plot happens, it ends poorly for the person who's trying to change things.

Plus also, you're basically asking me to change events that I created or helped create for the setting. I didn't create those events because I didn't like them and wanted to change them. I created and helped create them specifically to build the setting.

Hi JJ,

Can I know if there is a specific reason why these two feats are treated differently?

Elemental Focus
Benefit: Choose one energy type (acid, cold, electricity, or fire). Add +1 to the Difficulty Class for all saving throws against spells that deal damage of the energy type you select.

Poison Focus
Benefit(s): The save DC of any poison you craft with Craft (alchemy) and any spells you cast with the poison descriptor increases by 1. This bonus doesn’t stack with the bonus granted by Spell Focus.

The first is added with Spell Focus, while the second no, why?
Also there is Greater Elemental Focus, but there is no Greater Poison Focus, why?

Yes, I understood that they are two different feats.

Considering that fire and poison are both spell descriptors and, in my opinion, it makes no sense that in one case the bonus stack Spell Focus while in the other case, no.

So I asked myself if there was any mechanical motivation for which it was possible to increase the DC of a fire spell up to +4 (thanks to Spell Focus, Greater Spell Focus, Elemental Focus and Greater Elemental Focus), but not the DC of a poison spell.

Thanks in advance

Who is more charismatic? Sorshen or Nocticula?

Return/SS spoiler question:
I am curious, if there will be a sidebar in Return of the Runelords for how to handle a PC in Sorshen's body? If not, is there any insight you are willing to offer as to how Sorshen would react to such a PC?

I wouldn't. I'm trying to phase that out of the game, since it's not really how our deities work.

For recording purposes, are there other entities or groups that are being phased out?

E.g.: Like the Orc Cults, Ancestral Spirits, and Shimye-Magalla.

Isn't it like how Hanspur works? Ratfolk worship Ashkaelae and non-ratfolk worship Hanspur, but both ways worships the same entity.

Nocticula.

Spoiler:
There'll be a lot more than a sidebar on how to handle previous PCs from Shattered Star, Rise of the Runelords, and the rest in Return of the Runelords, including what happens if there's a Sorshen clone. There will very likely be a campaign trait tied to this possibility as well. We'll see.

Recording purposes? Not sure what you're asking about.

The orc cults remain and we've actually detailed the names of those gods, and in Planar Adventures have even given them a planar realm. They're staying.

Ancestral Spirits remain but aren't things clerics worship since they're not deities—things like oracles and shamans are better ties thematically to them.

The idea of a deity merging with another to form a combo deity is what's not appropriate for Pathfinder—that's not how I prefer deities to work in the game, and thus Shimye-Magalla is not a part of the game we'll be doing much with going forward... or if we DO, it'll loose its ties to Desna and Gozreh entirely and be its own thing.

They can't because I say so, frankly. That's part of my job as creative director—to set the vision of things like that and to direct the creativity of the setting. Feel free to change things in your game, but folks aren't here to ask about that; they're asking about the baseline campaign setting I work on.

It's not how Hanspur works at all. Hanspur didn't "merge" with another deity to create something new.

Beyond that, and while some have crept into print, I prefer NOT to have deities worshiped by different names. They can have different nicknames, such as Abadar being worshiped as the god of walls and ditches in Tian-Xia, but he's still called Abadar there.

It's unecessarially confusing to rename them. It muddies the waters.

To draw a parallel, it'd be like calling Batman an entirely different name, like "The Mariner", when he fights for justice in the Pacific Ocean islands, and describing him as being a combination of Batman and Aquaman on top of that. It doesn't make sense, and it dilutes what's cool about Batman and Aquaman, and robs everyone of the opportunity to simply make a 3rd character called "The Mariner" who can exist at the same time as Batman and Aquaman without removing them from the scene.

Kingmaker is very much a game in the vein of Baldur's Gate. No plans at this point to make one that's a first person experience like the Elder Scrolls game. No plans to make multiplayer games in the future really either.

Hello Mister Jacobs,

I respect and fully support your choices for Golarion, i am just curious about one point. Are you aware about the religious syncretism in the Americas ?

As the african slaves and native americans couldn´t worship their gods openly, they found a creative way to do that by dual worshiping catholic saints and furtively inserting their rituals on other religions.

I'm absolutely aware of it, and you attempting to use a real-world example of shameful, deplorable, historic atrocity to apparently argue me away from my stance on a make-believe religion doesn't really help matters.

Not sure what your point is.

Cat stuff. Most notably, meowing for attention seconds after I turn off the light to go to sleep, meowing again at 4:00 AM and then again at about 6:00 AM for food and/or attention, and then somehow realizing that I'm going to be getting up out of bed in the next few minutes so she then climbs up to fall asleep on my chest and is warm and cuddly.

Hello James!

So I don't know if anyone at Paizo is into theatre at all, but I was doing some research for an upcoming production of A Man Of No Importance and came to a weird similarity in stories:

Was the real life inspiration for the goddess Sivanah possibly Salome, Oscar Wild's play where he first coined the biblical Salome's belly dance as "The Dance of the Seven Veils?"

Or the Tom Robins book "Skinny Legs and All," where every time Salome drops a veil during her dance, the main character has a epiphany about life?

Just wondering, because the parallels between Sivanah, a mysterious goddess with many identities and exactly 7 veils that uses a Bladed Scarf (since she got John the Baptist beheaded) and is worshiped in Katapesh (who's real world counterparts seem to be based on where belly dancing was invented), and Salome's various incarnations over the years were interesting, even if they weren't intentional.

Sivanah is from my homebrew; in that setting she was a super-powerful thief/illusionist type character who vanished mysteriously and was said to be someone who continued to thief things all along from the shadows; sort of a legendary thief type character.

She wasn't inspired by Salome at all... or at least not directly, since I've never read the play.

Nothing major that most folks will notice... but that said...

We HAVE made errors in our world lore; lapses of judgement or just bad ideas or things we've decided to go a different way with over the course of a decade. So, the edition change is a great time for us to officially excise some minor parts of the setting that don't belong (which we've already more or less done but since they're still in print in this edition, they do confuse folks), no.

It's still the same setting. The transition to 2nd edition from an in-world viewpoint will not be noticeable, similar to how we transitioned from 3.5 to Pathfinder 10 years ago.

There's no "world shaking event" going on, in any event.

One of the things we're hoping to do is address things like that. Not so much by removing the Bekyar and their demon worshiping (there should be evil among all regions, after all, so that heroes have things to fight against), but downplaying them and skewing it more as an exception among some of them and not "all of them are demon worshipers," while simultaneously giving good guy groups more play. Can't go into much more details yet (other than to point out that one of the most powerful nations of all time, the Shory, is a nation of good-aligned Mwangi Expanse folk who we hope to do MUCH more with), but that's a great example of a choice we made 10 years ago that we'd like to change and adjust.

Sargava is hopefully going to skew away from the colonial aspect and the racial tensions and focus more on being a more healthy integrated society as far as culture goes that's wrestling with a shady past while having to work together to protect themselves from aggression beyond their borders (such as via monsters or Cheliax).

Not excited, really, as much as nervous that folks will still want to see it and frustrated that it got announced in the shadow of the 2nd edition reveal (and thus will be tough to solicit attention for it) and stressed about its deadlines... but that last one is normal for any book, really.

But whereas Hellraiser was a 10 and Hellraiser: Hellbound was an 8 that time has not been kind to and is now maybe a 5 or a 6... every other Hellraiser has been a 1 or MAYBE a 2. A romance/comedy book, maybe titled "Whimsical Adventures" or the like, would have been nice. Comedy and romance is the hardest thing to incorporate into a game without annoying or scandalizing or triggering folks. I think it's harder than horror to incorporate, which is a shame... I wish we lived in a world where we were more accepting of positive things than negative things, but that's not the world we've all built, alas.

As for a Postapocalyptic thing... I think that'd be better suited as a stand-alone game like Starfinder. But I'm biased, considering I've been working, on and off, on that exact type of game for 2 decades now...
