So, I'm running a Skull and Shackles game, and one of my players, for reasons that have less to do with effectiveness than humor, wants to make what basically amounts to a wondrous item spell in a can. Specifically the Spell is Mad Monkeys (from Ultimate Magic http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/ultimateMagic/spells/madMonkeys.html) and the can is a Barrel. It's a single use, use-activated item.

Mad Monkeys summons a monkey swarm with a CMB based on the caster's CL plus ability mod. I don't want to have to re-price the item in the future, but When my player makes the item, should I price it based off the lowest necessary CL necessary to make it? If I do, what happens when he makes more of the item when at a higher caster level than the minimum? or if his ability score increases do the monkey swarm's CMB values change? And if so would I have to change the price of the item?

I know people say "more fun than a barrel of monkeys, but I never thought making a barrel of monkeys would require so many tricky math judgement calls.

1) Leng is not the Dark Tapestry. Leng is nightmares. It's a brand of Lovecraftian hororr that's more lyrical and fantasy flavored than his more famous real-world horror stories. It's dark fantasy.

2) Aucturn is not part of the Dark Tapestry, but it's got Dark Tapestry influences. The Dark Tapestry itself is our name for "deep space," since "Deep space" sounds too science fictiony. This is the type of horror you see in movies like Alien or Event Horizon or The Thing, as well as the more famous Lovecraft stuff.

3) Qlippoth are essentially the wild animals of the Abyss. A mix of Lovecraft with a lot more ancient traditions; fear of the inhuman and utterly monstrous.

4) Demons are everything in humans that is bad. They are us, but the worst of us. They disturb because we see reflected in them things that humans can do, only taken to extreme.

5) Daemons are the fear of death. Dying in any number of painful ways.

6) Zon-Kuthon is basically the fear of pain and pleasure and loss and despair. Clive Barker style horror.

7) Rovagug is the horror of the end of the world. Nuclear war, asteroid devastation, killer plague, whatever. He's the apocalypse fear.

8) Groetus is what happens AFTER all the rest of the above is over and behind you. He's the fear of the dark unknown, of empty places, of nothingness and oblivion.

The Dominion of the Black is in fact the MOST mysterious of all the horrors mentioned here. They are NOT Lovecraftian monsters, although they probably have associations with the Great Old Ones and Outer Gods. We'll look a LITTLE closer at them in the upcoming "Doom Comes to Dustpawn" adventure, but not a lot... They're still in top secret mode for now.

What caster level someone chooses when they make a wondrous item is up to the creator; generally, they make it at the minimum level possible to minimize costs. When he makes more of the items at higher level, he can just keep it at the minimum and original CL to keep costs down.

1a) When an undead is destroyed, the soul is finally freed to go on to be judged. Whether or not the soul's actions while undead earned it a reward or punishment depends entirely on the situation. A powerful vampire who served Zura well might go on to be rewarded in Zura's realm... Pharasma might not like it, but neither will she "stack the deck" to mete out her own choice of punishment.

1b) Generally, mindless, after the fact undead only retain a tiny shred of the original soul. Not enough to stop the soul from moving on, but enough that as long as that undead exists, that soul feels slightly less. Kinda like losing a pinky toe. When a mindless undead is destroyed, that fragment is restored to wherever. Pharasma isn't involved, although she still hates the mindless undead.

1c) Same way as other non-mindless undead.

2) No. Female dwarves do not grow beards on Golarion.

3) Probably via kickstarter, and by hoping I get enough money to hire a few folks to handle the parts of creating a book that I don't know how to do.

Would a +4 or +5 bane weapon, becoming +6 or +7, bypass DR/Epic against a creature it was bane to?

Nope.

(Yeah, I know I'm way out of date :)

How did you arrive at that ruling? I'd always ruled the opposite (near as I can tell it would be pretty much the only way to overcome DR/Epic), and I'd like to get in sync with the way things ought to be :)

I arrived at that ruling by saying that epic should be hard to overcome, and that a +1 weapon quality is not bad-ass enough to do it. And since Pathfinder doesn't officially use the Epic Level rules as created by Wizards of the Coast, merely hitting +6 enhancement on a weapon doesn't do it.

That said, now that Mythic Adventures is on the way, that book will ACTUALLY tell us what constitutes a weapon capable of dealing epic damage. It could well end up that the bane weapon trick might end up working after all. We'll see.

Isn't it also true that Bane weapons don't make a weapon an effective higher plus for going against DR, just add a further bonus to hit and bonus damage? +5 weapon is still a +5 weapon in that aspect despite the extra +2?

I thought I'd asked this before but a search didn't find it, so apologies if this is a duplicate.

This is a repost from another thread that I started, but was told I should come here for an expedient, though not totally official, resonse.

So I've been looking at the Gunslinger for a long time and I have many questions about a few inconsistencies that I see. The biggest question I have is about a Pistolero class feature.

This is from the vanilla Gunslinger:
-Gun Training (Ex)

Starting at 5th level, a gunslinger can select one specific type of firearm (such as an axe musket, blunderbuss, musket, or pistol). She gains a bonus equal to her Dexterity modifier on damage rolls when firing that type of firearm. Furthermore, when she misfires with that type of firearm, the misfire value of that firearm increases by 2 instead of 4. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), the gunslinger picks up another type of firearm, gaining these bonuses for those types as well.

This is from Pistolero:
-Pistol Training (Ex)

Starting at 5th level, a pistolero increases her skill with one-handed firearms. She gains a bonus on damage rolls equal to her Dexterity modifier, and when she misfires with a one-handed firearm, the misfire value increases by 2 instead of 4. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), the bonus on damage rolls increases by +1. At 13th level, a pistolero never misfires with a one-handed firearm.

This is from Musket Master:
-Musket Training (Ex)

Starting at 5th level, a musket master increases her skill with two-handed firearms. She gains a bonus on damage rolls equal to her Dexterity modifier, and when she misfires with a two-handed firearm, the misfire value increases by 2 instead of 4. Every four levels thereafter (9th, 13th, and 17th), the bonus on damage rolls increases by +1. At 13th level, a musket master never misfires with a two-handed firearm.

This replaces gun training 1, 2, 3, and 4.

My questions are:
1)Should there be an errata stating that pistol training replaces gun training 1, 2, 3, and 4? It was clearly a replacement class feature for the Musket Master.
2)If it's not an errata, does this mean that a 5th level or above Pistolero with gun training on a specific firearm gets to add double their dexterity modifier to damage rolls with that firearm?

Planar travel and space travel are different. Outer space, indeed the ENTIRE universe (including all the countless stars and planets) is all contained in the Material Plane. It is, in fact, fair to say that "universe" and "Material Plane" are synonyms. You' can't plane shift or gate to the Dark Tapestry from Golarion, as a result, since it's on the same plane as you.

The Dark Tapestry is in large part still mysterious, and it's big, so I suppose it's POSSIBLE that there could be "positive forces" there, but they would be very rare. The whole point of the Dark Tapestry is to have a place for "Things beyond human understanding" to come from, and including elements within that region that are kindly or helpful or, frankly, even aware of humanity significantly erodes the flavor and theme of the region. So, at this point, I'd say no... no "positive forces" in the Dark Tapestry. The best we can hope from the Dark Tapestry is ambivalence to or ignorance of our existence.

I quite like planar adventures. We've published a few before. We'll be including a fair amount of planar adventures in the upcoming Adventure Path "Wrath of the Righteous."

Not a fan of dwarves, but these dwarves were well done. And I've always loved halflings, and that love is BECAUSE of hobbits in "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings," so seeing hobbits on the big screen is always delightful. And it's worth pointing out that the move's called "The Hobbit" and not "The Dwarves."

And the singing is fine. It's not a musical—the singing in "The Hobbit" makes sense and it's understandable in the context of the story when the singing starts.

Depends on my mood at the time. But I would still categorize the spontaneous casters as using the Vancian system. I VASTLY prefer both of those to a spell point system for a tabletop game. For computer games, I don't mind spell point/mana systems, but I actaully quite like Vancian systems as well. And at least one well-reviewd, well loved, successful video game of last year had a Vancian system (Dark Souls), so it appears I'm not the only one.

Sir,
Under emerging firearms, the default rarity for guns in a campaign, when would YOU implement advanced firearms for players:

"Advanced firearms may exist, but only as rare and wondrous items—the stuff of high-level treasure troves."

Based on the power level of advanced firearms compared to other abilities, I would think about 15th level.

What level do you think is appropiate, if running your campaign with emerging firearms?

Thanks!

That depends entirely on the campaign. I could see a campaign where the PCs find advanced firearms in the first adventure being pretty fun. The earlier in the campaign the PCs get them, though, the more the focus of the campaign really needs to be about the guns.

In the course of collating all available religious material for a player handout (more like a player brick at this point, really), a couple of things caught my attention.

1) Lissala. She seems to be the only god, in fact the only entity alive and able to grant divine spells, that does not have a known title/epithet! Besmara the Pirate Queen; Groetus, God of the End Times; Hadregash, Greatest Supreme Chieftain Boss... ...Lissala.

Is this a deliberate choice, or something that just slipped by? If the latter, would you be willing to furnish her with something appropriate?

2) Kurgess. Looking at his legend, he's an obvious choice for a mythic mortal given a boost to demigodhood... complete with a possible divine heritage, as you mentioned here:

James Jacobs wrote:

And yes... deities do go out and... visit... mortals now and then. In fact, that element (playing the son or daughter of a deity) is going to be something of one of the underlying themes of Mythic Adventures to explain why and how certain PCs are mythical.

It's because mom is Desna.

...The interesting thing is, Kurgess is rumored to have been the "half-mortal son" of Cayden Cailean and Desna. If this were true... would it indicate a general rule reminiscent of BECMI's Immortals, that the gods can't just reproduce and have children who begin at god level? Or would this be better handled on a case-by-case basis?

...On a side note, the thought of the gods having such children in defiance of conventional gender roles or even reproductive norms amuses me. Potential mythic character: the child of Desna, Sarenrae, and Shelyn... :)

1. How long was Sorshen's megadungeon in operation before Earthfall? How long did it take to build?

2. What kind of adventure path do you want to write for Sorshen?

3. What did the art order for Sorshen say?

4. Does Karzoug have any clones lying around?

5. Will any mythic runelords be given the arcane surge ability? I ask because they'll likely be facing PCs with mythic tiers, which nullify the benefits of arcane surge.

6. How many times a round can a wizard cast a spell with arcane surge or wild arcana? The description doesn't say, and if there's no limitation than whichever wizard goes first owns the fight.

7. How do you get a golem to obey you and only you if you're not it's creator?

8. Besides in the megadungeon, will there be robots in Pathfinder Online?

9. What do you particularly like about elves?

10. Why aren't you so keen about dwarves?

1) Not sure.

2) Ones I'm not ready to reveal yet.

3) I can't remember the details—wrote it years ago for Inner Sea Magic. Probably something like "This is a beautiful human woman with long dark hair and sexy robes; she carries a glaive with two blades at one end." But the artist misinterpreted the "two blades" part and made it into a double weapon instead of a double-bladed glaive, alas.

4) Unknown, but probably not. Not really his style. And if he DID have some clones lying around, we would have certainly mentioned them in "Rise of the Runelords."

5) The mythic rules are not set in stone, so it's impossible to say what we might or might not do for any mythic NPCs at this point.

6) Dunno; not familiar with either of those options off the top of my head. The general design philosophy is that it's really tough to cast more than one spell a round, and so far, there's not really a way to cast more than 2 a round.

7) The rules don't offer a solution for that at this point that I'm aware of. I'd say by using Craft Construct on a restrained golem to "reprogram" it to serve you and by spending a lot of money (perhaps half of the cost of the golem) to do so.

8) The actual contents of Pathfinder Online are not yet set in stone. I really don't expect there to be robots in the game at all. You'll need to direct actual questions about what's going into the game and what's not to Goblinworks, though, in any event.

9) The fact that back in 1st edition they had a LOT of cool multiclass options. More than any other race. Also, they're very very atractive!

10) Because in 1st edition they had a very limited number of multiclass options and low level limits. They're also pretty ugly. And they're also generally portrayed as loud, stubborn, arrogant drunks, which are all personality traits that really REALLY rub me the wrong way.

1) If we didn't make one up for her in the recent article about her in Pathfinder... then yes, that's a deliberate choice. Up until the recent article, we simply hadn't had much at all to say about her is all.

2) Or perhaps that Cayden Cailean slept with Desna BEFORE he became a god...

This sort of thing is pretty common in Earth-bound mythology; I'm familiar with several Indian legends:

The second incarnation of the Hindu god Daksha Prajapati had 10 fathers (all brothers) and one mother, an apsara nymph.

Nishada and Prithu, also, were formed by kneading the corpse of their father Vena, and hence, had no mother.

A certain number of Hindu gods, like the sons of Shiva (Murugan and Ganesha) had only one parent - Murugan's mother is a river, rather than female entity, and Ganesha was spontaneously generated by Parvati, though he was adopted by Shiva.

In fact, unusual facts of birth seem to be a major indicator of mythic status, in general.

In Raiders of the Fever Sea, Wesley Schneider writes that "Mr. NcCreary...made a boat...a full miniatures-scale ship--and it looks fantastic!" He also made mention that this ship smuggled its way onto your top shelf (unless it was some other "James" to which he was referring).

Can we see a picture of it please? :D

Gilgamesh, of course, was one-third man and two-thirds god, and Heimdall had nine mothers...

No such book has yet been announced, as far as I know.

That is not a denial.
