Yes, I looked that up before I posted my questions, because UM only covers the "Out Of Game" mechanics of spell design. I don't need help with that.

In fact, the UM refers to page 219 CRB about Researching the spells.

While I can come up with my own DC's and quantity of checks, I was wondering what you would do in a home game. I'm just looking for a suggestion (not an official ruling).

Sorry for being a pain.

Ugh. I'd hoped that we'd actually build rules for the in-game mechanics of designing spells by now... it's something I've been requesting of the design team from the start.

Ah well.

I'd set the costs for researching a new spell to be equal to the costs to purchase that spell. And I'd set the DC to craft the spell to be equal to 15 + twice the spell's level. It would be a Spellcraft check, in any event.

You don't feel that's too easy? I would think that creating a whole new spell would be more involved than just purchasing a spell of a standard scroll off the shelf.

If a player in your campaign wants to research a new spell how do you make them ask the question of whether it's possible? The cost of researching it?

It's the same as every wizard just opening up his spellbook with no negotiation, and the Spellcraft check is so low that it's a non-issue for a wizard that keeps his spellcraft maxed out, and what wizard doesn't?

Cool; glad folks are enjoying the androids!!

1) No plans. There's no need to do an ARG style follow up, since all the Race Point things are there. Unless what you're asking is for us to do an expanded ecology of the android along with new feats and spells and traits and all that? In which case, yes indeed, I plan to some day do so—there's lots more about androids to talk about!

2) The Technic League knows a LOT more about them than Barbarians, but the Technic League doesn't know a lot about them. They've certainly vivisected a lot of androids, but knowing what's inside hasn't helped them figure out how to make them.

3) That's an interesting question, the ramifications of which will be eventually explored, I suspect...

4) It would likely be quite obvious.

Oh, My whole group think they are cool. Not everyone wants to play one but they make cool NPCs and characters. Me personally? I want to play Android Gunslingers! XD

I can't wait to see more Andorid details. The undead question was the first thing that came up when we saw the "Constructed" race element. If positive/negative energy effects them we thought they were androids from Blade Runner.

Thanks for the answers.

1.) Do elves not sleep or are they just immune to sleep spells like dragons?

2.) If elves to sleep do they share any relation to dragons (they both have enhanced senses, immunity to sleep, and an intuitive understanding of magic)?

3.) Finally are their any spells that allow one to shape and mold medal like stone shape or something akin to flesh to stone but for metals?

Hey James,

When do AoO's "Refresh"? In other words, when exactly can a player/monster make a new one if it's already used up it's allotment of AoO's for the current round? Is it at the start of the initiative order, or is it at the start/end of their next turn?

On your action in a round.
Just to verify, that's effectively the start of your next turn, correct? Is that referenced anywhere effectively in the rules? Can the next printing/srd push say that explicitly?

In the end, it doesn't matter if you say that attacks of opportunity reset at the start of a character's turn, or if they reset at the start of a round, as long as you maintain consistency for all characters throughout the campaign. It makes the most sense for them to reset at the start of a character's action, since that's effectively the point at which in any combat a character gains the ability to make them (a character can't normally make Attacks of Opportunity before their initiative rank allows them to make their first action in the first round of combat).

If that's still not enough, I suggest making a post/request in the Core Rulebook rules forum so that folks can FAQ the question.

I don't feel it's too easy. In fact, I quite like when spellcasting PCs add to a campaign world by inventing new spells, and making the rules to do so too overly complex makes that less attractive or interesting to players.

Drilling down to it being a single check, a single gp cost, and a single length of time mimics how item creation works, and that's a lot more elegant than having something wildly different for spell research.

If a player wants to research a spell, I say "Great! Write the spell up and submit it to me for approval. If I approve it, you can build it!" And I usually have adjustments to the spell's level or other elements. After the spell's approved by the GM, the player takes the time, spends the gold, and makes the check.

I don't mind if at some point the DC is so low that it's a non-issue for powerful spellcasters to make spells. That's a benefit of being powerful.

But a DC 15 + 2x Spell Level Spellcraft check is not a non-issue. If a spellcaster maxes out their Spellcraft ranks and bolsters it further with feats... that's fine. That character spent the resources to be great at that skill. He should reap the benefits.

1) Elves sleep. They're just immune to sleep effects that force them to sleep.

2) Nope. They don't have any link to dragons. No more so than humans or dwarves or gnomes or any of the core races.

4) Not that I know of, but perhaps some day there could be.

I think he probably means a racial followup like Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of the Advanced Race Guide.

And by the way, I'd totally give Paizo even more of my money for the featured and uncommon races to get the Core Racial Treatment. Just sayin'.

It's kinda hard for me to answer that. I can design a pretty cool magic item of the right length in an hour or so. Whether or not it'd be my best idea, or whether or not it'd "likely advance" to the next stage, I can't say. If I weren't yet in the industry, I'd likely agonize over the item, write it up, then revise it dozens of times until I was certain every single word was perfect. Which would probably take days, so I'd not leave it to the last minute.

That said, regardless of how I approach it, I'd try to get it done and posted several hours before the actual deadline, because a lot can happen in a few hours that can distract or delay you from making that deadline if you wait too long.

Yes. Unless he was the Herald of Nyarlthotep, in which case greater planar ally/binding would work.

You don't have to go through the trouble of posting your build if you don't want, but I'm curious; 1) what kind of character did you make in Dark Souls?

Mine is currently a sword and board medium armor type character with one miracle (heal). I'd like to continue the straight sword/light shield all the way, but I might add some pyromancy down the line.

Also, it's very hard for me to resist looking up FAQs online but so far I've avoided it. 2) Did you resist the urge as well?

The final boss was a little underwhelming, I felt. He was cool and all, but after all the huge over-the-top bosses before... I guess he felt kinda small. And once I figured out he was weak to fire, my +10 fire katana or whatever it was called wrecked him pretty good.

The ending was relatively anticlimactic.

The DLC was really quite good, though. And the journey TO the boss was great. I'm not the type of person who lets an anticlimactic end ruin what was a great ride getting there.

I went through a LOT of evolutions for the character. I started wanting to play a fast swashbuckling thief, but quickly learned that the mid game really rewards heavy armor use. By the end, though, I was mostly a katana wielding heavy armor but still fast-moving due to high endurance miracle caster who dabbled in pyromancy and periodically used a bow. I ended the game at about 125th level or thereabouts, so I had a lot of options on how to re-equip to take on different tactics.

I did indeed use the various Dark Souls wikis a LOT. And I didn't feel at all guilty about it, since the game is in fact REALLY complex on how you build your character, and the fact that it doesn't tell you anything about how to do it was really frustrating. It'd be like someone sitting down to run a game of Pathfinder, giving you a blank character sheet, and then not letting you see the Core Rulebook and only telling you how your choices in your character build affected your character AFTER you made the choices... and AFTER the GM made you write those choices down in pen so you couldn't erase your choices if you realized later that you did the wrong thing.

I have a couple questions about the pack style archetypes of Druid and Ranger.

1) If you were using either of these, could you go into Mammoth Rider PrC and how would that work out? Would I get to choose which companion it affected? Would it affect all of them? Or what?

2) How would one of these work with a lv4 dip in Cavalier who picked up the horse master feat?

What happens when you're killed via level drain is a hazy area. Usually you turn into an undead, in which case your soul would not go on to the Abyss.

But those kissed dead by a succubus don't turn undead.

What happens to those souls will be revealed at some point in the future though! By this time next year, in fact, if not sooner!

Yeah... you'd expect a dude with a fiery sword to not be weak to fire... but there ya go.

I basically defeated him in the end by running up with the fire katana two handed, hit him 3 or 4 times then jumped back twice to swig the Estus Flask, then repeated. Worked pretty good, and ended the fight at half health.

My other tactics, which included pyromancy and great lightning spears and a +5 Lightning katana and the super-bleed sword from the expansion didn't all work out so well...

Running water has indeed been invented. How well it's spread through any particular city depends on the city, but in Westcrown, one of the largest of cities in Cheliax, and an ex-capital at that... more buildings in there have running water capability than don't. But Westcrown is a pretty run-down city these days, so I suspect that most folks use river water or well water since city upkeep's declined in the last 110 years or so.

I arrived at that ruling by saying that epic should be hard to overcome, and that a +1 weapon quality is not bad-ass enough to do it. And since Pathfinder doesn't officially use the Epic Level rules as created by Wizards of the Coast, merely hitting +6 enhancement on a weapon doesn't do it.

That said, now that Mythic Adventures is on the way, that book will ACTUALLY tell us what constitutes a weapon capable of dealing epic damage. It could well end up that the bane weapon trick might end up working after all. We'll see.

What would you say are the unique features of each one, and what might make each one the best option for a particular story? Here are a few that I can think of:

1. Leng and the Dark Tapestry
2. Aucturn and the Dark Tapestry
3. Qlippoth
4. Demons
5. Daemons
6. Zon-Kuthon and the Shadow Plane
7. Rovagug
