Mr. James Jacobs,

In your estimation what would the offspring of a mortal and a demon lord (Let's say Nocticula) be? Just a base type of half-fiend, some unique creature, etc.?

A bit more general: What power level would the offspring of a mortal and a demon lord/empyreal lord/Archduke/etc. be at?

Nope.

They would be magical beasts. And would need a different and new spell to awaken them than the one that works on animals... probably a 6th level one, since awakening a mindless creature is tougher than awakening one that's just stupid.

Or the vermin heart feat?

Hey James. I have a player with a fighter that has a horse he really likes. The character is now level 7 and wants to take Leadership to have his horse as his cohort so that it can survive a bit better into the higher levels. I'm a little confused right now due to work, so was wondering if you could answer these questions:

1) What would the Cohort Level be of a light horse from the Bestiary 1? A heavy horse?

2) Could an animal take classes if they have only an Intelligence of 2? He wants a fighter and that seems alright, but I know animals with an Intelligence of 2 or less can't make use of some feats (like the feat Martial Weapon Proficiency).

3) Finally, assuming I allow it, what would the Cohort Level be of a light/heavy horse with X amount of fighter levels?

Thanks for any help.

The rules for magic item creation are more like guidelines than rules, precisely BECAUSE they should be able to guide the creation of any item.

A perpetual forge that's always on is really not all that outlandish of an effect, really, especially if all the thing does is let you use a forge but still takes up the room a forge normally takes up. Even a small, portable forge isn't that outlandish.

For something like this, where there's not really a spell that is obviously the one to use to help generate the effect, it's best to just write up the item and submit it to the GM to see what it should cost.

If one of my players asked about this item, I'd probably have heat metal be the required spell, or perhaps pyrotechnics, and then would likely have the whole thing cost relatively little. Forges themselves aren't as expensive as even a +1 sword, I wouldn't think... I'd probably say a "fuelless forge" would cost about 1,000 gp. Maybe less.

Thanks again for the response.

Do you dislike the idea of a full BAB champion of some alignment ideal other than LG, or is it building it off of the chassis of the Paladin?

From here.

Is there supposed to be an "instead" there? Are they serious that a Fighter with 18 STR holding a Greatsword in both hands attacking gets to add not only 1.5 times his STR modifier to the attack, but then ALSO adds twice his STR modifier on top of that?!

I feel like there should be an "instead" there, but I cannot tell.

Such an offspring would be a mythic half-fiend or half-celestial, as appropriate.

1) As a general rule, I'd say that you can't really have a cohort that's not smart enough to talk to... but if you dismiss that restriction, I'd probably say that a light horse would be about an equivalent level of 2 or 3, and a heavy horse 3 or 4.

2) Nope; you need to have an intelligence of at least 3 to take class levels.

3) Cohort level would probably be whatever the base level you decide on (from 2 to 4, I would suggest) with the fighter levels adding on a one for one basis.

Actually... there's two options I would suggest:

OPTION 1: Let the character pay to have someone cast awaken on the horse. That powers up the horse a little but more importantly makes it intelligent enough to start taking class levels and work better as a cohort.

OPTION 2: Allow the player to rebuild his character as a class that can get a horse companion. If he wants to go low-magic, as a ranger or a cavalier. If he wants to be more supernatural, as a druid, or perhaps as a summoner who summons a magic horse.

Not at all... PROVIDED the new class is built fresh and new from the ground up without trying to equal or emulate the paladin.

Actually, I wrote a pair of articles for Dragon back around issue 310 that did just this—provided a new paladin for every alignment. And it was actually kind of tough... and I'm not all that fond of the results.

I think a MUCH better option would be to build alternative base classes of this type tied to specific deities or religions rather than to alignments. Tying them to a deity or religion gives you SO MUCH MORE flavor to build on than just the alignment.

Yeah I've seen that and thought it was great though thought it was odd that they didn't actually change the alignment for the antipaladin.

Easy enough to give them proficiency in your game if you want.

Not sure why they weren't made proficient with them in the first place though. Probably because that might make them a slight hair too good in the design team's eyes.

Regarding Damage Reduction:

Can a creature with DR 5/silver (like a werewolf) overcome another creature's DR 5/silver?

Also: Mustard or catsup (or ketchup—pretty much the same thing, after all)?

Does Damage Resistance apply before or after being altered by the effects of a save.

I.E. if I'll deal 20 fire damage with an AOE effect against a creature with DR 10 to fire, if it makes it's save is the damage halved and then subject to the DR 10, making it take 0 damage, or would the damage be reduced, and then halfed, making it take 5 damage?

20 / 2 = 10 - 10 = 0
or
20 - 10 = 10 / 2 = 5

(my GM is wondering)

3)How many Empyreal Lords will there be in the Chronicles of the Rightous?

4)Is the man who become the first Rakshasa still around in some form or another since they reincarnate? Would he be a mythic level bad guy or just in the CR21-25 range?

6)What is the last movie(or movies) you saw and how did you like it?

7)Will we ever see more skill bonus feats like alertness, steathy, etc.? I would really like to see one for acrobatics/escape artist and another for disable device/use magic device.

Magical Aptitude +2 to Spellcraft and Use Magic Device.
Stealthy +2 to Escape Artist and Stealth checks.
Acrobatic +2 to Acrobatics and Fly checks.

Here's another set:
Roc companions have two talon attacks with grab and one bite attack.

On a charge, am I correct that they only get one attack, even if both claws are involved (raptors seem to do this while attacking)?

If the roc (or any other creature with two grab attacks) makes a full attack and hits with both, how does that work? Is there a bonus to hit after the opponent is grappled? Can the attacker not make a second attack, as that 'uses both [hands]'?

Would the grappled condition option of "You can inflict damage to your target equal to your unarmed strike, natural weapon, [etc..]" mean both talons used to grip, and/or would bite be allowed.

Finally, how might you GM an attempt by a winged or quadruped creature to pull, lift or otherwise move an opponent, especially one smaller than them? That is very open, I know, but consider that mobility is not really hindered by using claws/bite to grab hold of an enemy. Maybe drag, with opposed strength checks?

Thanks!

Zero chance. That article, along with everything I wrote and pretty much all of what everyone else wrote for Dragon is owned by Wizards of the Coast and isn't open content.

That, combined with the fact that writing the articles more or less convinced me that a paladin of every alignment is a bad idea thematically means that those classes will never appear in Pathfinder.

My favorite class is the bard. Second is cleric, third is rogue, fourth is druid, fifth is probably the highest alchemist could get these days.

Improving and changing classes depends on the class. NOt sure if you were asking what I'd improve about the alchemist or my favorite class... but for the bard, I'd tinker with Versatile Performance so that it actually grants bonus skill ranks and if those bonus ranks go on a skill you already have ranks in you'd get to reallocate those ranks or something like that. For the alchemist, after seeing several in play, I'd probably drastically lower the rate at which their bomb damage increases... maybe 1d6 at 1st level and then +1d6 at 6th level, 11th level, and 16th level where they'd max out at +4d6. And then I'd let them have no limit to the bombs per day. As they exist right now... they're a little TOO reliant on bombs and they do a little TOO much damage.

As a general rule, a creature needs the weapon type required to overcome damage reduction. Many creatures treat their natural weapons as a specific type of damage reduction penetration, bu that's not the case for creatures with DR/silver. Two werewolves attacking each other with their natural weapons are just going to have to put up with the damage reduction, which makes fights between them long and harrowing. Which is kinda cool.

Mustard all the way, except for french fries, which are really bad for you and I try not to eat them anyway. So... Mustard is clearly the superior condiment.

20 / 2 = 10 - 10 = 0

(my GM is wondering)

I assume you're talking about energy resistance here (there's no such thing as damage resistance), since you're talking about fire.

Energy resistance applies as soon as you actually take the damage. The saving throw helps determine what amount of damage you take.

So. When you deal 20 fire damage to a target and the target gets a saving throw to halve the damage, the target attempts the save first. If he fails the save, he takes 20 points that is reduced by 10 so that he takes 10 points of damage. If he succeeds at the save, he takes 10 points of damage that is then totally blocked by his fire resistance.

That's mostly a question for the Design team.

In THEORY, a weapon becomes exotic when its stats are fundamentally better than a similar weapon. That's why the bastard sword is exotic; it does a little more damage than the other one-handed version, the longsword.

Looking at the tetsubo, we see that it's basicaly a greatclub... but it has a x4 critical modifier, which is MUCH better than the greatclub's paltry x2 modifier. That's why the tetsubo is an exotic weapon.

Looking at the nodachi, it basically has the exact same stats as a bastard sword (1d10/19–20/x2), but you can't use it 1 handed at all. And you can use a bastard sword as a 2 handed weapon as a martial weapon. So that's why the nodachi is a martial weapon.

The skill bonus feats are relatively disliked by many folks here at Paizo; they're regarded as "boring" by quite a few. I actually like them because they're great feats to give NPCs who you want to be really good at a few skills but don't want to make higher level. That said... the game's probably got enough of them in the game as it stands. Unlikely we'll be adding more of them to the game.

On a charge, they only get one attack. That can be one bite or one claw.

If a roc makes a full attack and hits with both claws, it gets a chance to grab with each claw. Once it grabs with a claw, the target is grappled and it no longer gets to grab the foe... it doesn't need to since the foe is grabbed.

For a creature with grab, the best bet when it's grappling a foe is to NOT use the grapple option to inflict damage to the target, since that takes a standard action. It's generally better for the monster to make a full attack against a grappled foe and take advantage of the fact that it's natural attack lets it make grapple attempts as free actions. The only time a monster with grab would be likely to make a plain-old grapple check in such a case is if it wants to pin a foe.

For monsters that want to grab a foe and move them, I generally just say that once you're grappled, the monster has you. The monster's strength (and size) determine how much it can carry. If you weigh less than its maximum load, it can carry you around and reposition you. The drag and push and other combat feats are really meant to be used when someone does this to something they're not grappled with.

Hmmm... it's space should be Large sized, but the rest is fine.

So it's meant to be 10x10 space with 15-foot reach?

I think I just found my new favorite polymorph form. :D

It's actually probably meant to be normal 10 by 10 space with a 10 foot reach... but there's actually quite a lot of monsters that have longer reach than normal.

What oracle mysteries would be associated with Pazuzu?

Edit: Follow up do you think pazuzu would have more clerics or oracles following him?

Oracles don't generally follow single deities. They follow pantheons for the most part. They don't HAVE to follow single deities, unlike clerics.

In any event, there are more clerics than oracles on Golarion, so Pazuzu has more clerics than oracles following him.

And mysteries aren't really associated with deities at all... or more to the point, you can associate whatever mystery you want with a deity.

We really should have not listed "associated deities" for the oracle mysteries, in other words... too confusing.

As a general rule, a creature needs the weapon type required to overcome damage reduction. Many creatures treat their natural weapons as a specific type of damage reduction penetration, bu that's not the case for creatures with DR/silver.

If a creature has DR X/adamantine (or mithral, or cold iron, or whatever) is this also the case? Is there any case at all where a creature's DR (say DR X/epic, or DR X/adamantine vs. DR/silver, for example) overcomes the DR of the creature it's attacking?

The global monster ability for DR does say that DR X/alignment penetrates the relevant DR when the creature with DR attacks, but it doesn't mention materials. It seems likely that, since materials aren't mentioned in that particular definition, that your answer does include mithral, adamantine, et al, but I just want to clarify.

It's been a rather contentious discussion at our table on Saturdays.

This may have been asked already:
Boxers or briefs?

Slippers or socks?

When the situation warrants, regular necktie or bow tie? (I'm personally a fan of the Mississippi string tie.)

Yup; a monster's entry will say what sorts of damage reduction it can overcome. If it says nothing, it can't overcome damage reduction with its natural attacks.

With the exception for the global entries you note. Alignment DR is different than other DR in this regard.

Briefs and socks.

No ties at all if possible, but if there's no choice, regular necktie.

Question on Settlements, How exactly do you handle rolling scrolls and other expendable items for small towns or other large non-metropolis sized cities who have larger base values then most scrolls categorized as minor scrolls?

Will we get an article or any advice on how to incorporate the random tables from Ultimate equipment with the system used to decide unique items for settlements?

Will we see any new settlement qualities, governments, and disadvantages get published in the near future like ultimate campaign?

I generally don't roll up magic items for settlements in games I run. I either just go with the base value and let the PCs buy what they want, or I pick and choose to assign items.

There are no plans at this point that I know of to reconcile the differences between settlements and the items in Ultimate Equipment.

We may make up new qualities and the like for settlements in adventures now and then. Probably not in Ultimate Campaign, although there will be a lot of other stuff for settlements in that book.
