1. Like how Tian Xia is the Land of the Dragon Empires, will the civilizations in Arcadia have a similar title?

2. Have you ever played Rise of Legends? It's a computer game that had three races. One was steampunk and had some D'avinci influences, one was Arabian Nights, and the last race (Cuotl) was heavy on Mayan influences. If you haven't played it, definitely check out some of these pictures of them and tell me what you think of the style.

Thanks for the kind words about the Dragon Empires stuff... all of that was among the hardest things I've had to pull off for Paizo in a long while, so it's good to hear folks like the results of all that hard work! :-)

1) Yes. It won't be "The New World" though. Not sure WHAT the continent's subtitle will be yet.

2) A little, but not much. The concept art is neat!

You're definitely reading things and implications into my comments that aren't there.

Homebrews that use Pathfinder are awesome. Since large parts of Golarion are heavily based on my own homebrew world that used various editions of D&D, it'd be contradictory for me to adopt a dislike of homebrews that use Pathfinder.

What I mean by that comment is that the VAST majority of the books we publish are rulebooks, adventures, or Golarion expansions. We don't actually publish a heck of a lot of "get better at playing the game" books. The Gamemastery Guide had a fair amount of that content, but as a rule, it's just not something we do much of.

Exactly. And since we're not fans of putting a "2" after a book title (with the exception of Bestiaries), we'd even need to come up with a new name for a Gamemastery Guide sequel.

Barring the Young Creature simple template from the Bestiary... Pathifnder doesn't really have rules for playing characters younger than the starting ages listed in the Core Rulebook. As a result, whether or not a GM allows this into his/her game is up to him or her, but if it IS allowed, you'll want to adjust things to make things work.

Allowing a 10-year-old kid to have a score of 18 in ANYTHING, much less Strength, breaks my suspension of disbelief enough that I'd not allow it in any game I ran. Unless that kid's like Gorum's great great grandson or something like that.

In any event, George Martin's books prove that having 10 year old (or younger) children as primary characters in a fantasy story is really awesome, as far as I'm concerned... to say nothing of the countless other stories featuring children, so I actually support the concept of a PC child in an RPG game.

In the Pathfinder Society organized play campaign, I would say that you shouldn't play a 10 year old kid, because you should adhere to the minimum starting ages as laid out in the Core Rulebook. More because there simply are not rules for anyone of younger age than any other reason.

Something you might want to look at for playing as kids:

http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/katz/dnd/kids.html

It's really fun and works well. In one game, we played as teenage fighters-in-training using both that and the Super Genius Guide's Apprentice rules. Was fun playing and actually earning the title of being level one :)

If I have a character in a PBP PFS Scenario that has died, am I able to take that character to an actual Society event? If so, would I just use his stats as presented upon creation or could I get a chronicle sheet for however much of the scenario was completed?

This is one of the questions asked to me by a buddy of mine who I recently converted into playing Society (our varying schedules keep us from playing our usual home games). I guess he asked his GM there, but not even the GM was sure. At the time, they ruled it as being okay, but not being able to use the chronicle sheet, but I thought I'd ask here because its something I'd like to hear some sort of 'officially unofficial' ruling on.

That's a Mike Brock question. But I would think that should be okay... I'm honestly even less familiar with how PBP PFS games work than PFS games in the first place.

Frankly, so much of PFS relies on the honor system anyway that as long as you're not specifically trying to cheat the system, I don't see this as being a problem at all. Your character DID actually play through those encounters after all

That's alright. Your answer is highly appreciated nonetheless.

No. That is not a large enough topic to fill the minimum amount of pages a hardcover book requires. It could certainly make a compelling section of a book, though.

Maybe as a chapter of a new 64 pages booklet with support material about encounters, like update of the NPC guide, clarifications about applying templates and some other material?

I like to get material about the NPC side of the world and my players appreciated "Hirelings: Into the Wild" and one of the players immediately adopted Anando as a hired helper.
Maybe it would not be worth the development time, but a few pages dedicated to "NPC magic" with spells and items that aren't meant for adventuring life would be interesting.

Things like a "Assay alloy" spell that allow you to know the different metals presents in a item and so on.
Clever players would find a way to use them while adventuring, but they would be meant to be mostly useful for normal life.

I've always played as if the village Adept had spells like "Ease Childbirth" and "Summon Children" and so forth - spells no ordinary PC would bother with but that in a magical universe would have been invented by some harried spell-caster, somewhere. Though "Summon Children" has a certain Grimm connection. Is this true in your games?

Liberty's Edge

@Jeff de luna

It depend on how common is magic in the world I am depicting, but yes, that is the way I will use magic in a world were it is common.

It is one of the things I liked in the flavour of Shadowrun. Where was magic more commonly used? Military/espionage, fashion, high priced novelty items, medicine and entertainment.
Fields where, if you can, you are willing to pay more for an increase in performance.

In a fantasy world like Golarion normally you will not find a cobbler with a spell helpful in making shoes, but there are good probability that some of the midwives working for the rich and the nobility will have a "Ease Childbirth" spell.
There are several ideas that can be lifted from other games that can be adapted to Golarion. The "Healthy Glow" spell that work as a day spent in a beauty salon would be a must for the high society ladies of the Taldan court before every major party.

The only problem will be finding the middle point between giving the impression that magic isn't only for "killing stuff" and making it too common.

Jeff de luna,

IANJ but, we had a hedge witch have spells similar to that. Part of my character's backstory included that the hedge witch was casting "Know gender" on fetuses and she also had the spells, "Babymaker" which assisted in child birth, "Powerword: STFU" which also assisted in childbirth, (or at least making the whole process quieter) and "Baby gauge" which told the midwife witch how far along in development the fetus was.

Powerword: Stfu only worked on targets with less than 8 hp, and it only lasted a few rounds. I don't think it ever saw combat...

Our parties actually use several useful, utility spells that are intended for everyday use. It just helps with the verisimilitude.

The idea of a werefox is public domain. In fact, we have a fox stat block in Bestiary 3, and the lycanthrope template is in Bestiary 1, so anyone can already make a werefox by just using those rules.

The kitsune is a player character race option in Tien Xia; it's detailed in the Dragon Empires Gazetteer and the Dragon Empires Primer, but is not in a bestiary for the same reasons we don't put dwarves or elves in bestiaries. It's pretty much our version of the ninetailed fox... but that doesn't mean we'll never actually do a ninetailed fox as a separate monster.

I don't like listing least favorites.

I think the azruverda is entirely made up by us... If I find out otherwise I'll report back.

Barghest and nabasu are not connected; they've certainly got similar powers, but they're no more connected than basilisks and medusas, or purple worms and tyrannosauruses, or any other monsters who share similar abilities. The Nabasu itself is based on generic demon myths—it was actually invented for D&D back in 1st edition and isn't, as far as I know, based on a specific real world mythological creature.

And the hound of ill omen isn't really a monster in the traditions of the game at all... it's more like a plot device. I wouldn't replace it with an actual monster at all as a result.

Depends on the campaign. But on average, I write anywhere from 300 to a thousand words of backstory for my PCs before the first session of a new campaign begins. I'm actually starting a Skull & Shackles campaign run by Rob this Friday (yay!) and I'll be making a background about that detailed for that game.

Not really in the rulebook line—since that line doesn't include world flavor, we wouldn't have enough to talk about to keep a hardcover book interesting.

We DO do a line of "Monsters Revisited" books in the 64 page Campaign Setting line, though, and have been from the start. Those books are pretty much our version of things like Libris Mortis or Lords of Madness.

Like the 3.5 Sandstorm, Frostburn, and Stormwrack books? They were good books, but I would have prefered less locations. More of a focus on adventuring and characters. Condense a few areas into one book. A book for sea based games and another for the planes.

Well then...Updated the note here.

Shadow Lodge

Oh Wise Dinosaur, please do not eat me if these questions have been already asked, but I don't feel like nor have the time to be reading though 15k+ posts and my search fu is weak

1) In an earlier post you talked about a Paladin using lay on hands while using a light shield and a one handed weapon and said something like there were three things to do in combat, but he could only choose two.

a)Keep the shield's ac.
b)Threaten with his weapon.
c)Use lay on hands/cast a spell.

Now my first question is, using the above example, would I be correct in assuming that a caster using a two handed weapon can either cast a spell (with somatic components and a standard action to cast) or threaten with their weapon for that round? If so would they be able to threaten with a two handed weapon if the spell they cast was cast as a swift action?

2) In this thread we are discussing attack rolls and damage rolls when TWFing with more than two arms. Now I have been wondering how this would work out since Ultimate Magic came out, it is possible for a Vivisectionist (or any Alchemist for that matter, but makes the most sense as a Vivisectionist) to use the Vestigial Arm discovery to grow extra arms and fight with either a greatsword and shortsword (-2/-2) or two greatswords (-4/-4). Now it's not the attack rolls that i am confused about, it's the damage rolls.

Lets assume a 3th level Vivisectionist with 14 strength fighting with two greatswords. He'd have an attack of 0/0 (2 bab + 2 strength - 4 TWFing penalties) but what is his damage for his 'main hand' greatsword and his 'offhand' greatsword? I'm assuming 2d6+3 for the main hand and 2d6+2 for the offhand but I just want to check since I cannot find any rules about TWF/MWF and two handing weapons at the same time.

EDIT:
I knew I had another question.
3)The spells Spiritual Weapon and Spiritual Ally that are on the Cleric's spell list call out the wisdom modifier to be added to attack rolls, which is fine for a Cleric, but since Oracles don't actually use wisdom it's a bit more problematic... I haven't seemed to have missed an errata or FAQ for these spells allowing an Oracle to use their charisma modifier instead, so are Oracles just boned on this one RAW?

This is, perhaps, an interesting idea for a rulebook. WotC certainly delved into this genre with their books, and I helped write the first one, so I've got a pretty good notion that a big book of environment rules and stuff COULD be neat.

Whether or not it'd be a better seller than something else... dunno. It's REALLY difficult to avoid the lure of a rulebook that's primarily aimed at players, I tell ya what, and an environment book like this would not be as primarily aimed at players as a large number of other options I could think of...

We've announced products through July, but because the Product Schedule page is *really* about shipping schedules, and those aren't considered very solid until after the products are at the printer, that page only ever goes a couple of months into the future.

If you'd like to see what's coming up in a particular line, go to the page for that product line and look at the preorder product listings.
