Sometimes, yes, depending on the beast. They're more likely to take levels in classes that won't be hindered by their biology, though. Probably not many sphinx wizards since it's hard to write spells with a paw, AND the idea of a sphinx writing with a paw is kinda silly anyway.

Offically she doesn't care. Her Penitence sect thinks it's evil and unnatural. The rest of the Church just goes along with it.

Even if the question's jokey... please don't clutter the thread and let me answer the questions here.

In Golarion, why does casting spells with the [good] descriptor change an evil persons alignment from evil to good?

It's more the result of making the conscious decision to cast a good spell that starts to make you good, rather than the spell itself making you good. Or evil or whatever. But yes, an evil person who continues to cast good spells will, barring any other action, eventually become good. If the evil person continues to do evil acts on the side, though, whether or not the good created by those good spells is enough to counterbalance the evil depends on the situation.

James, then what is so bad about being damned to hell?

Think of the most painful, humiliating, agony-inducing thing that could ever happen to you. Not me, not someone else, but YOU.

Now imagine that lasting forever.

Now imagine it lasting longer.

Now imagine it getting worse with each passing second.

That's what's bad about being damned to Hell. It's worse than that.

So why would anyone without an immortality plan knowingly serve Hell?

I likely asked this before, but it boggles me that much.

Because if you serve hell and do so well and then get sent there, your torment is NOT eternal. It might not even ever happen at all. These people are the ones who become devils and themselves do the tormenting. They might have to endure a relatively short period of torment, but that's more like training than a punishment.

Hmmmm...

I wonder if there are chimera, Leng spider, or hieracosphinx antipaladins?

1.If a paladin of serenre dies and is judged by pharasma would he be sent to the lawfull good plain or would he be sent to serenre even though she is neutral good?

2.can a god request pharasma to send the soul of a devout servent somewhere else? and would she honor that request? For example a CG character who wasn't a devout of iomedae but helped the church a lot dies could iomedae ask pharasma to send her to her instead of the CG plain?

3. Do the gods only use outsiders that match their alignment as servants or can they be one step removed like devine casters. Could the herald of iomedae be NG indstead of LG?

1) Such a soul would go to Sarenrae's realm.

2) No. Doesn't work that way.

3) Deities are free to use any minion they want, but they tend to skew towards those of their own alignment or adjacent alignments so that their will is done more efficiently and with less subversion.

Wish and/or miracle MIGHT be able to do it, but powerful rituals and artifacts and singular magical effects and the whim of the gods will as well.

An outsider retaining their mortal memories is intended to be a VERY rare and significant event, since the result can often be a very powerful creature (If you retain your memories, you retain your class levels after all, and those should, in theory, stack onto your new outsider race).

Hell's Rebels actually has a fair amount of this going on; check it out for an example of how it might happen.

Love what Paizo did with Faceless Stalkers in book 2 of Hell's Vengeance! Follow up: from what I gathered on them, (forgive me for any misinterpretations as I'm going by memory here) they seem like a very long-lived race, who take great precautions on their stolen IDs rather than go nuts and run all chaotic-like (I don't see them above weeding out the wilder elements of their species). Do you think that this, coupled with the problems inherent to gather a steady human blood supply, would seem to indicate that reproduction would be a very carefully planned communal event? or would it be an individual/intimate process?

In that case, what classes might a chimera take? Their mental scores are a bit low for spellcasting.

Also, are there antipaladins of Dahak and Ydersius?

A chimera likely wouldn't take class levels at all; it'd just advance by HD and grow more powerful as a chimera. Not every monster is made better/cooler by giving it class levels.

There are certainly antipaladins of Dahak. Not sure about Ydersius.

Would said paladin then become an angel or other NG outsider after being a petitioner or would he become an archon more intune with his alignment

Does this characters alignment change influence a characters behavior?

For example, a devil worshiping wizard fighting agents of Abaddon might cast Protection from Evil regularly, simply because its useful. He is too busy with the fighting to do anything actively evil.

Is he going to come out of this conflict as an altruistic person? Or does he just have a good alignment that will quickly get brought back to evil by his evil behavior?

Arazni has been referred, on occasion, as a demigod when referring to her tenure as Aroden's herald. Was this an error? Is she an exception? Was she formerly a unique outsider, but upon being brought back as a lich and having lost her herald/demigod status, reverted to class levels?

Probably an angel, since that's what Sarenrae herself is.

Calling her a demigod is technically an error, since she only grants 3 domains, she's something more akin to a quasi-deity, but that's not something we've officially defined in the game.

I do have more questions:

1) Do deities physically manifest themselves in front of mortals or do they just "possess" their heralds/servitors in order to manifest him or herself? I'm asking this because we haven't seen a single statistic block for deities. Ok, fine, maybe Pathfinder doesn't need to stat out the deities, but if you guys offer us artworks of the gods, then it's safe to assume that they do have a physical form and can appear in front of mortals.

2) How can a deity die? I've seen deities being killed in Pathfinder, but for immortal divine entities, that had to take one major event or item for one to kill a god. There is also the rumor that killing worshippers will weaken and eventually kill a god. It's referring to why the Githyanki Lich Queen never allowed high-level characters and worshipping, because if she ever bestowed divine powers to her kind (which was an outcome in a Dungeon Magasine adventure), she would risk being turned into a dead goddess if she would be overturned... or if githyankis would disappear.

3) What actually happened to the Ancient Orision pantheon? I get that one deity can disappear from a religion, but an entire pantheon? That goes back to my previous question about whether or not a deity can die. Furthermore, you have powerful beings like Osiris, Isis, Ra, Set, Horus, Anubis and Nephthys... Pretty sure that it takes more than a political reversal to wipe these deities off the cosmos. Beside, wouldn't they do something to prevent believers from switching faiths?

4) Can we expect other "ancient" pantheons in future regional booklets? The Ancient Orision pantheon is based on real-world Egyptian Gods. That got me thinking about an "Ancient Kellid" pantheon based on Norse Mythology, or maybe an ancient pantheon based on Greek Mythology, or Babylonian or Mesopotamian Mythologies. Ok, that might be considered "superfluous" lore, but still, the presence of real-world Egyptian Gods does open to having more of these in the future ;)

5) Is it possible for a cleric, paladin... or any character for that matter, to worship an entire pantheon as a whole? Worshipping pantheons has been possible back in Eberron, but I haven't seen actual pantheons with the current Golarion deities. Maybe there isn't a Golarion pantheon and each deity is considered singular, I don't know :P

6) Could there be deities based on agatheons, inevitables, proteans, aeons, rakshasas, asuras, daemons, demodands, divs, genies, kamis, manasaputras, onis, sahkils and/or titans? Asmodeus is tied to Devils, Desna is tied to Azatas, Erastil is tied to Archons, Iomedae and Shelyn are tied to Angels, Lamashtu is tied to Demons, Pharasma is tied to Psychopomps, Rovagug is tied to Qlippoths and Zon-Kuthon is tied to Kytons (according to their associated servitors from Inner Seas Gods). That got me thinking about other deities that could be ascended outsiders from other species. I say "could" because it's more than possible that not every deity has been classified and/or every outsider group has its respective patron deity. It does open the door to seeing those new gods though ;)

Thank you in advance for your time ^_^

1) They can do both. Deities don't use stat blocks, so when they manifest themselves, they can't be hurt and can pretty much do whatever they want. When a deity directly manifests in your game, you get to do whatever you want with it.

2) The idea that a deity's number of worshipers is directly related to its health, and that a deity with no worshipers dies is NOT a Pathfinder concept. That is an element of the Forgotten Realms, and by extension perhaps in many other D&D settings, but it's not the case in Pathfinder. A deity with no worshipers can be as powerful as any other deity. As for how deities can die... that varies as needed by the story you want to tell. It's one of the only cases in the game where you don't use rules to set up plots. You just use pure story to set it up. The results can certainly inspire new rules elements as you see fit.

3) They still exist, and are still worshiped here and there, but for the most part their worship occurs on different worlds other than Golarion. We talk a lot more about this in the Mummy's Mask Adventure Path if you want to know more.

4) We've got an Elder Mythos pantheon in the Strange Aeons Adventure Path, and as it makes sense for future stories we'll do similar pantheons as well. It's very very very unlikely we'll do this for pantheons that don't have a strong presence in the world, so don't expect much in the way of most real-world mythologies.

5) A cleric must worship a single deity because clerics use domains, and only deities grant domains. Other divine spellcasting classes who don't have abilities based on gaining domains can worship pantheons or ideals or philosophies, so you can certainly do this with an oracle or the like. But for the most part, divine spellcasters in Pathfinder worship single deities, and for clerics that's 100% true.

6) It's certainly possible, but the existence of some deities does not guarantee the existence of others. There's NO WAY that we've covered every possible deity, since there are countless worlds in the universe. Look at Inner Sea Gods; the tables in the back list several hundred different deities and demigods, and that's merely those who have even a tiny amount of influence on the smallest continent on the planet. The possibilities for deities throughout the rest of the worlds in the universe are essentially infinite, as far as creativity in game design is concerned.

Hello, James;

What is the primary shipping on which the pirates of the Shackles prey? Is it traffic between the Inner Sea and Sargova, or coastal traffic off of Eastern Garund, or do they range far out (Inner sea, Arcadian ocean off of Eastern Avistan) for targets?

Do Shackles pirates offer to transport goods at a premium, 'protection racket' mark-up? ("Look, the best way to keep your goods from being stolen by a pirate is to have a pirate carry them!") Or would this practice be shunned by the Pirate Lords (as cowardly, or 'cheating', etc.)

Thanks!

I'm going to be playing in Hell's Vengeance early next year and am trying to prepare well for playing an evil character, because I want to do justice to the opportunity. To that end, I thought about playing a Dhampir who is searching for maybe his father or some other way to ultimately become a full vampire. Given how strong the vampire templates can be however, what would be a good compromise that would allow me to create a vampire character (off the top of my head, I would guess the transformation would happen by the end of adventure #3) that wouldn't be completely imbalanced, as I don't want to overshadow any of the other PCs?

I did answer it, but either the site ate my answer or it posted somewhere else.

But, if you portray your elves in a non-xenophobic way, you're actually portraying them as I as the creative director of Paizo PREFER them to be portrayed. The idea of elves being xenophobic is super-ingraned in gamer culture as a result of D&D and Tolkien, and it's an element I've tried NOT to embrace or even have in print in Pathfinder, but it's such an ingrained part of how we see elves that most of our writers and a fair number of our developers and editors assumed that was true for Golarion and elements of it keep creeping into print... more so at the outset than recently.

So ABSOLUTELY you should have the elves be open and welcoming.

I'm guessing the "at the outset" partially relates to the design for Kyonin, which is heavily seclusive, if not outright xenophobic.

This kinda falls into "different campaign setting" territory, but if you had a whack at a more inclusive Kyonin, do you think that would drastically change how half-elves and the forlorn are perceived throughout the setting? Would the concept of being "forlorn" even exist?

If one's playing something like Kingmaker, is there a way the ruler can promote reform in things like education, religion, architecture and the arts if they lack the necessary skills to oversee something like that personally? I'm interested in playing a sort of Charlemagne or Justinian-style figure, but I worry that if I play a paladin like I want to, I'll basically run into things like:

"How can you write a series of essays defending your legal reforms, you don't have any ranks in Artistry, and furthermore, how are you smart enough to MAKE those legal reforms in the first place, because you spent your two skill points on Ride and Handle Animal?!"

"How can you pioneer new architectural styles, Knowledge (engineering) isn't a class skill for you?!"

"How can you propose economic reforms, you don't have any ranks in Appraise?!"

"How can you promote the building of new churches and revised editions of your god's holy book? You don't have any ranks in Knowledge (religion) since you spent your two skill points on Diplomacy and Sense Motive!"

It feels like if you want to be a reforming sort of ruler, you're locked into picking classes that either have a lot of skill points to spend like a rogue or investigator, or play as a class that benefits from having a high enough Intelligence that such things don't matter, like a wizard.

Have you seen Cleverman? I'm utterly enthralled by it, if only because I never get to see TV from Australia in a convenient and popular source (Netflix.) It's heavily tied into aboriginal mythology, especially the Dreaming, which I know you like.

Have you seen the BBC's Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrel? (Also on Netflix) They present the Fey in just about the best way, alien, terrifying, seductive, and utterly self-absorbed. (I wish I had a copy of the novel it's based on, but the show is excellent on its own.)

You can't contact a mythos deity or demigod via contact other plane because there's no entry for "Material Plane" entities. You CAN use commune and there WILL be a contact other plane similar thing that lets you contact Outer Gods and Great Old Ones coming up in the Necronomicon article I wrote for part 5 of Strange Aeons.

The bulk would be traffic between Avistan's Inner Sea Region and west coast and the coastal towns of western Garund, which includes all of Sargava but also a LOT of significant Mwangi Expanse cities, like Bloodcove and Senghor. It also includes additional coastal cities along the coast of Garund south of Sargava.

Some pirates could offer protection rackets perhaps. It's really up to them if they want to do so.

I don't really want Kyonin to be 100% open and all-inclusive, just friendlier. Forlorn would remain; they don't exist because of a concept of elves being standoffish at all. The forlorn are elves who grow up with short-lived races and endure the weirdness of watching childhood friends grow old and die of old age while they stay young.

It feels like if you want to be a reforming sort of ruler, you're locked into picking classes that either have a lot of skill points to spend like a rogue or investigator, or play as a class that benefits from having a high enough Intelligence that such things don't matter, like a wizard.

Talk with your GM about this. These are all role-playing elements, frankly, and not really rules questions. That said, if you want to play a character who focuses on a wide range of skills, you do indeed need to consider playing a class that offers a lot of skill ranks. That, or play a human (bonus skill rank) with a high Intelligence and use your favored class levels to bolster more skills.

You can't have it all.

I've seen both on Netflix, and have added the latter to my list but not the former. I might do so. That said, I have a LOT of series on queue in Netflix, because I tend to binge watch, and that means that I generally only do one at a time and don't start them if I don't have a good binge window. AKA: It might be months or even years before I get to these.

Are there any Bestiary 1 monsters that you think would make good swashbucklers, magi, investigators or vigilantes?

Did evolution happen on Golarion in the Darwinistic sense? Like, did humanity start as a far more primitive, Neanderthal-type race and slowly build into what the Azlanti became, or was it "Poof, you're humans and you're intelligent?"

I only ask because of creatures like the anunnaki and class options like the devolutionist druid.

If someone used the Scepter of Ages (or something like it) to travel back in time and warn Aroden of his eventual demise, what's more likely? That the warning does nothing to prevent it (for any one of a number of reasons), or that it seems to save him at first but the warning winds up being indirectly responsible for his death?

To a certain extent, yes, but we've not revealed how much so.

What's more likely is what YOU want to happen in your game. If someone tried this in my game, it wouldn't work and they'd be putting themselves in danger.

Well, by "monsters" I more meant creatures with racial Hit Dice.
