Ha! Same here. My personal faves were Death Knights of Krynn and Secret of the Silver Blades, I think that was the name of it. What were yours?

Pools of Darkness, hands down, was the best of them all, I felt.

3)Also did you know that according to the pathfinder wiki Salaphiel is a god who oversees the seventh tier of Heaven and he dwells in the Winding Tower of Salaphiel?

1) Not off the top of my head, but that's why we write these things down. Wes is the one who's done the most work on the Empyreal Lords, and I trust him 100% to come up with good stuff for them, and thus save my own sanity by not having to micromanage one more element of the world.

2) See #1 above.

3) See #1 above.

BONUS) I'm not sure what you're aiming at with this line of "did you know" questions. The way you phrase them feels like you're trying to trick or entrap me or something... it feels very antagonistic. If that's not your intention, you might want to think about rephrasing them or... if you have another question that you're skirting, just ask that one rather than peck around the corners of the topic.

And keep in mind that the wiki is NOT an official Paizo information source; anyone can add anything there, including well-intentioned fans who misinterpret or misunderstand information we've published, fans who don't realize we're moving away from something we may have published years and years ago, or even people who might be trying to deliberately cause problems. I like to think that the Pathfinder Wiki is not plagued by these situations but it's naive to think that it's not. As with ANY publicly-editable wiki, it's best to use it as the start of your research and to follow up with the citations.

sometime ago you said you did not like real world Celestials in the game. I thought that was strange because some are already in the setting so i thought you did not know or you forgot.

2)Why do you use the word "myths"? when i am referring to real world Religion i just use the word "Religions" even if i don't believe it to make sure i am polite and considerate of other people's Religion.

1) Yes. Further evidence that Melek Taus is not the Peacock Spirit.

2) To me... myths and religion are pretty much the same thing, but point taken. I'll try not to do so in the future, and didn't mean to offend. I hope that folks who are religious extend agnostics/atheists the same level of respect as well.

1)Will we even get more info on Melek Taus?

2)agreed

That's a generalization.

What I basically meant was that I don't intend to stat up Jesus or Satan. The more obscure a character gets, the more likely it is that it'll be considered as inspiration for a character in the game.

No plans at this time. Who knows what the future might bring, but personally, I've a lot of other characters I'd rather explore in the game than Melek Taus. Who is so low on my to-do list that, as you pointed out, I didn't even know existed.

OH! I mis-read that in my rush to answer questions fast.

Shalelu isn't a fan of half-orcs, and likely has yet to meet one that steps away from the cliched big violent brute. She's pretty open-minded though, so when one DOES come along, she'll be pleasantly surprised to have her expectations shown wrong.

It's cool. And thank you for answering my question.

Out of all of the APs done so far, which is your most favorite one and which is your least favorite?

If you could go back and redo any of the APs which would it be?

Did you ever play icewind dale I and ii as well as baldurs gate series and if so what did you think?

James, what is rationale for the price hike on several of the key product lines? (I just got the e-mail, sorry if this has been explained here or in another thread.)

While I am able to pay for the bump to my AP subscription, I am concerned that this is some sort of bad sign for Paizo. I need reassurance, I am a neurotic fanboy! :)

I do have favorite and least favorite APs, but I don't make those publicly known.

If I could go back and redo any of them, though, it'd be Second Darkness. Of course... which ones I get to redo and which ones I want to redo have little to do with each other.

I quite enjoyed Icewind Dale and its sequel, although I never finished the sequel since my PC died before I finished it and I lost the save games and never had the energy to play it over.

We'll be putting up a blog post about the price increases soon, but in a nutshell... inflation.

As the cost of creating products goes up... the cost of buying them has to go up. Has little to do with Paizo, and all to do with the fact that things today cost more than they did 10 years, or even 1 year ago.

If i get this straight part of the plot of bloodborne is mortals having sex with a Outer God and and producing half human-half Outer God creatures(sorry if i got that wrong i have not played the game)

1)Is this something common that the Outer Gods in the pathfinder setting do?

2)Is it common for other gods(like the core 20) to have sexual relationship with mortals?

3)How do outsider feel about there god having sexual relationships with there mortal worshipers?

4)What does Iomedae think of gods having such relationship with mortals?

The plot of Bloodborne is NOT spelled out in game. All of the souls games are very subtle in how they tell their stories—there's not really any big information dumps or plot expositions. What you learn from the world in-game comes from brief and always cryptic/elusive/metaphorical conversations with a small handful of NPCs, short snippets (equally cryptic and vague) of information about items you find in the world, and just by observing the world's creatures and architecture and all that. Which leaves the game's meaning VERY open to interpretation on one level... but yes. There's a large element of humanity and the Great Ones interbreeding, similar to elements Lovecraft used in "The Dunwich Horror" but on a much more epic scale.

1) Some of them, yes. In particular, Shub-Niggurath and Yog-Sothoth... the later, again, having done so specifically in "The Dunwich Horror."

2) Not common, no.

3) They don't generally have the free will to disapprove; that's part of what makes them outsiders and not mortals. They almost always approve of ANYTHING their deity master/mistress does.

4) Depending on the deity and the mortal, she'd approve, as long as it was consensual.

1)Regarding outsiders Would they jump at the chance to engage in sexual activity with there god?

2)You said that outsiders can't usually sexually reproduce with each other. So i want to ask you can a god give there outsider minions the ability to sexually reproduce with each other?(I can see a god of procreation or birth doing this) also can a divine source god do this?

3)You say that outsiders "almost always approve of ANYTHING their deity master/mistress does" But want if they serve a divine source god? would the outsiders treat the divine source god differently then a true deity?

Is hellfire a product of evil-outsiders, or a product of the good-outsiders designed for punishing evil?

If evil-outsiders are immune to [hell]fire, then why is it threatening at all?

This confuses me because of the fallen angel turned devil trope. If an angel is cast down, isn't that supposed to be a punishment?

Why are they not in eternal pain instead of running around with agendas and such?

I've looked around for other answers to this line of questions, but I'm afraid the burden falls to you, O Great Dinosaur King, as not even page two of Google holds what I seek therefore I must assume it does not exist, yet.

Got a question about the upcoming Hell's Rebel AP.

I was wondering since the PCs are rebel does the AP take into the account the PCs hiding their identities during the adventures? Or it does not matter?

Has the pathfinder society spread to other worlds?

If not are they planning on establishing lodges on other worlds and other material planes? And if so which ones?

do you plan on working with wizards of the coast in creating something of a crossover event between their worlds and the pathfinder setting? That would be awesome if you did! The worlds of d&d joining forces with the world of pathfinder!

What is your opinion of the d&d movies (all of them including the choose your own adventure one and the animated Dragonlance movie)? There's five movies btw. ;)

What is your opinion of the d&d animated series?

Do you think the pathfinder iconic characters would befriend drizzt and his friends? (Fanfiction is so amazing ;) )

What is your favorite d&d setting?

If lolth ever invaded the patfinder world how would her arrival change the abyss as well as the Drow of pathfinder?

I'm confused about Abadar. I hope you can clear things up for me. I know he's a lawful neutral deity but why does he allow lawful evil followers when he's the god of law and civilization? Surely he must know that evil people tend to break the law more often than good people and that those who are evil tend to make laws that only benefit themselves which causes a corruption and degrading of civilization which you would think he would be oppose to. My question is why doesn't he just accept just LG and LN worshippers?

1) Some would, some would not. As with 99% of these types of generalized broad questions, it depends on the factors.

2) Gods can do anything they want. So... yes. And there's plenty of outsiders who can sexually reproduce; that's the main place half fiends and half celestials and aasimars and tieflings and all that come from.

3) Divine Source gods, aka Mythic characters, are still forming their divinity. They're still figuring things out. They're still mortal. As such, they're mostly just sparks that eventually burn out. Those rare few who sustain enough to become demigods have years or even decades or centuries to settle down and figure out their religion, and outsiders can help guide that process. A quasi-deity like this is probably approached by many different outsiders or other influential people eager to try to manipulate the new and sometimes impressionable quasi deity into changing their religion to serve their needs. That's just a few of the possible stories you could tell about these types of lowest-tier gods.

Hellfire is a product of Hell itself.

According to Book of the Damned 1, where we first introduced hellfire, it's a magical form of fire that stinks, requires no fuel, and sometimes doesn't even shed light. Half its damage is fire damage, and half is unholy energy damage. Evil creatures take no damage from the unholy side but still take fire damage normally. Good creatures take double the unholy side of the damage.

I'm not sure we've said anywhere in print that hellfire is intended to threaten evil outsiders. In fact, it's a tool favored by devils in particular. It works REALLY WELL at burning good guys.

If an angel is cast down, it's still angel. It's still going to probably take a fair amount of damage from hellfire. When and if it turns into a devil or whatever, that's its reward—no more pain from hellfire.

Check out the broken soul template for a "being put into eternal pain" punishment. That's different than hellfire, but it's a common fate of those who fall into the clutches of evil outsiders.

That does, to a certain extent, matter. If the PCs take pains to hide their identities, they'll have an easer time of it avoiding some elements of the bad guys' reactions, but if they are more public, they'll gather more support and accolades from those looking for leaders to follow. Either way works; the AP supports both options.

In any event, whether or not the PCs kept their identities secret or not really doesn't matter all that much until the end of the 3rd adventure and the bulk of the 4th.

The Pathfinder Society has been to other worlds, but hasn't yet "colonized" or "settled" other worlds. They don't have chapter houses on other planets. No plans to do so really at this point.

No plans on working with Wizards of the Coast. We've done so before. We prefer being our own masters. It's been a lot more rewarding.

I loved the older D&D cartoon from the 80s! It was my favorite cartoon, in fact.

Greyhawk.

It wouldn't. I suspect she'd be assassinated by Nocticula or eaten by Lamashtu.

Abadar isn't interested in kindness. He's interested in society. Look at this world. There are PLENTY of examples out there of how society takes action to benefit society but hurts the people or the planet or whatever. And CHAOTIC people break the law more often than LAWFUL people. Good and evil don't really influence whether or not you break laws. Lawful evil people (many of whom worship Abadar) are perfectly capable of living in a society and taking part and not breaking laws and building the nation up without tearing things apart. Look at Cheliax for an example. If we wanted Abadar to just accept LG and LN followers, we would have made him lawful good (and he would then have also accepted NG followers). That's not nearly as interesting as a god of cities who can encompass the good AND the bad of city life. Hence, he's lawful neutral. Check out Inner Seas Gods for more info on him.

I am not the asker of this question, but I find your answer intensely helpful nonetheless. Thank you, Mr. Jacobs! :)

NOW here's a question: Is Besmara basically Golarion's version of Davy Jones, or is there a Davy Jones separate from Besmara? I ask because I'm unsure when playing a character from the Shackles or something and I wanna say "there are secrets that sleep with ol' Davy Jones" if that conflicts with how you set up pirate lore on Golarion. If Besmara IS Davy Jones, then I'll have to think of another thing that secrets could sleep with that rhymes with "bones."

Huh? She would? That's odd. Lolth is actually a greater goddess so a demigod might have a lot of trouble killing her.

Of course lamashtu is probably of equal rank. Oh well, there goes that ap idea of mind. (Was thinking of having he pcs stop an alliance between lolth and lamatsu as well as the princes of elemental evil from conquering numerous worlds, meaning the characters would travel to greyhawk and forgotten realms in order to stop this evil alliance) :(

Do the princes of elemental evil exist in the pathfinder universe (since the elemental lords seem to be of neutral alignment and I'm assuming that the elemental princes are more powerful than the lords. I could be wrong though).

Is the pathfinder society open to adventurers from other worlds and material planes?

And Abadar reminded me a bit of saint cuthbert from greyhawk so that's why I was asking. Still since I'm on the subject do the gods of pathfinder die if they are no longer worship like those in the forgotten realms? And is it possible for multiple gods to have the same portfolio?

What the highest level a godling can reach after attaining god hood?

Are the novels canon in the pathfinder setting and will future APs have pcs meet some of the characters from the novels?

There is no specific "Davy Jones" analogue in Golarion that I'm aware of. Regional legends may suffice, and there may be one mentioned in Skull & Shackles (Not sure.... I never read all of those and got TPKed halfway through the second one). Rob's a better person to ask this question.

Thing is... when you get to deities, they DON'T have rules in Golarion (we don't use the lesser/intermediate/greater god rules at all), and that means I kinda get to be the one to decide those things. I like Lolth, but I'm more proud of what I've done with Nocticula, Lamashtu, and the Golarion Demon Lords, so if Lolth were to show up... the Golarion deities have the advantage. It'll never happen, so it doesn't really matter. If it happens in your home game, YOU are the one who gets to decide the outcome of something like that, in any case.

We have our own evil elemental lords; see Inner Sea World Guide or Inner Sea Gods for more info on them.

Pathfinder Society is open to pretty much anyone who can meet the entrance requirements. They aren't a discrimantory group and actually welcome diversity, so an off-world traveler would likely be quite welcome.

Abadar is actually VERY different from St. Cuthbert. A god in Pathifnder does not die simply because they lack worship; they do become forgotten, and less worshipers means they have less impact on mortal worlds, but it does nothing to impact their own power. It's absolutely possible for multiple gods to have similar or even the same areas of concern (we don't use the word "portfolio" for that).

20th level is the max level, regardless.

The novels are canon to the novels, but their events do not push Golarion's timeline forward. Golarion does not expand its events with each publication like Forgotten Realms does because that makes an increasingly difficult barrier to entry.

Hm...I see. By level I was referring to ranks (greater, lesser demigod, etc) but you actually answered that question when you mentioned that y'all don't use god rules.

Is it possible to create a worldwound linking to another plane? Say for example nirvana or elemental plane of air?

Was the death of aroden one of the reasons for the rise in aasimar and tiefling births?

Do y'all plan on having pcs travel to the upper planes in future APs? Most APs have them travel to elemental plans or the lower planes.

Do most deities tend to keep track of their godlings? And if so why? And if not why? Just curious and sorry for all of the weird questions.

Being a fan of d&d worlds I'm trying to inderstand the lore of pathfinder (taking a bit longer than I thought). Hope you won't hold that against me.

Yup, I got the rank bit, but we don't use those rules. We specifically do NOT use rules for things above Demigod status.

It's possible to create a Worldwound type link to another plane to somewhere other than the Abyss, but for the most part, the personality of the creatures involved would not really be into creating such a thing. It would certainly require a powerful mythic spellcaster, and those are pretty rare.

Nope. Aroden's death has nothing to do with aasimar and tiefling births.

The good-aligned planes are not great places to adventure, due to the lack of conflict for good aligned PCs. Doesn't mean we'll never go there, but it means it's unlikely. We'll see. No plans to go there in "Hell's Rebels," in any case, and we haven't made any announcements yet about what's after that (we will soon though, at PaizoCon).

Depends on the deity. Some do, some don't. Some care, some don't.

No problem! Pathfinder/Golarion's lore is very heavilly inspired by D&D, as it grew out of that game, but we've taken a LOT of steps to divert from D&D in many places so as to avoid stepping on WotC's toes and intellectual property, and so as to build our OWN intellectual property. For example, there is no Blood War in Pathfinder. Demons and devils can work together, although it's not common. The BEST place to go to get started learning the lore is the Inner Sea World Guide.

Hey, James: last time I noticed anyone ask you on this thread, you were going through a less-than-awesome time. I've been praying* for you since. Have things gotten better? Anything able to be shared that I could keep in prayer for you*? How's life?

On a very different note, I'm really inspired by your weight loss. I don't know if I mentioned it, but I wanted to. Great job!

Any tips or advice on how's or why's for others?

On more general notes, what do you think about Unchained, if you've had the opportunity to look at it? Good things? Bad? Meh? Merisiel's depictions?

If you could, at present, suggest classes for the Four (N?)-PCs in Jade Regent (now that more base classes have come out), would any of those suggestions change? Ameiko in her previous appearances? If a group wanted to incorporate Amaya somehow (from Council of Thieves**, one of the original Children of Westcrown, post-that-game), is there a generic sort of suggestion of how?

(I'm given to understand that she's related to Ameiko, but as I've never successfully played or run an AP with Ameiko in it yet, I don't actually know her history, despite being interested.)

Incidentally, outside of Ameiko, are there any of the Four that make appearances prior to Jade Regent?

And finally, as a wildcard: to you read any webcomics? If so, care to name them? If not, would you like recommendations, or would you rather avoid them?

Thanks! :D

I understand that we may have wildly divergent belief systems, and possibly you've undergone unpleasant interactions with those of my faith for reasons.

In which case, please, presuppose that this holds up to "good thoughts" or similar that are more palatable. I mean this exclusively in the best way, and hold no ill will toward you, regardless.

Actually, on a very tangentially related set of questions: do you have a specific answer for Blue Hood from Westcrown is? I have one for my campaign - which was awesome, great AP, by the way -, but I'm always curious about official answers. :D

Thank you for answering all of my questions!

The world of Golarion has been a huge inspiration to me (along with the d&d worlds too). So thank you for creating such a wonderful setting for all of us!

While I know that the inner sea world guide mentions (I've actually borrowed that numerous times from the bookstore I work at: employees are allowed to check out books as long as they bring them back within two weeks and the condition they were in when they were checked out; my boss actually made a joke that I've checked that book out so many times he's surprised that I don't know the book by heart; I'm an avid reader), that the Vudrani can actually worship any deity or religion but I'm unsure if inner sea deities like Shelyn or Abadar are worship in vudra and jalmeray in additional to rhe local deities. My question is what inner sea religions are found there and which ones aren't? I'm not sure about the empyreal lords but I could be wrong.

How does one become an empyreal lord anyhow?

And if a god has become forgotten is it possible for that deity to be unforgotten?

Will we see an ap in jalmeray one of these days? And what about one where we help Taldor regain its former glory?

James, could Pazio do a couple of modules that are the inverse of Hell's Rebels where the players play characters that hunt down the disloyal rebels.

Things are slowly getting better, yes. Thanks for asking! :-) In any event, this isn't the place for me to whine about my problems, but thanks for the kind words.

For weight loss... my tip would be twofold—find someone to lose wieight with, since that gives you a support structure. More important, hook up with a nutritionist or other professional to help KEEP you on track with weekly checkups and a highly structured regime. And be patient. Took me well over a year to go from 365 pounds down to about 210 pounds, which is where I'm at more or less today. I'd like to be a little less heavy than that, but it's still much better than where I was a few years ago, and it's all thanks to having a structured program. I used Ideal Protein to do so, but there's plenty of other options.

I like the unchained rogue but haven't really had the opportunity to read much through the book at this point.

As for Jade Regent characters... the campaign is really one that rewards a lot of different types of play. The advice in the player's guide for that AP remains fine today.

And we might have more to say about Amaya by the end of the year... stay tuned!

Shalelu has appeared in Rise of the Runelords and in Second Darkness, and also has a cameo in one of the comics. The other two NPCs were invented entirely for Jade Regent and haven't appeared beyond that AP yet.

I don't really read webcomics regularly enough to have one I'd recommend.

Spoiler:
Thanks.

I do not have a specific answer for Blue Hood.

Yay! Thanks for reading!

We've not said much about worship in Vudra, but there's certainly at least SOME worshipers of the core 20 living there. Vudra has a very complex religious setup, with literally thousands of gods. We'll have more to say about that some day, but for now, not much.

One becomes an empyreal lord (or archdevil or Horseman of the Apocalypse or demon lord or whatever) through a custom-made GM-created storyline. It's not really something that a PC should ever expect to achieve; becoming a demigod is pretty much NPC territory.

We don't announce our plans for Adventure Paths that far out. We announce them twice a year; one at PaizoCon (in a few weeks) and one at Gen Con (in a few months). Until then... no comment. ;-)

We could do a lot of things.

That said... folks have run Rise of the Runelords for goblin characters, and have had paladins in Skull & Shackles. A creative GM should be able to use Hell's Rebels to build a "Keep Kintargo from the Rebels" adventure path where the PCs work for Thrune, I suppose, although that'd likely require a COMPLETE reworking of the last two adventures.

Still. People enjoy challenges, it seems.

There is no specific "Davy Jones" analogue in Golarion that I'm aware of. Regional legends may suffice, and there may be one mentioned in Skull & Shackles (Not sure.... I never read all of those and got TPKed halfway through the second one). Rob's a better person to ask this question.

I shall take this to his thread poste haste. Thanks!

In the council of thieves, if we are using an advanced class say for example the cavalier oracle, or magus which of the children of westcrown would see our character as a role model?

Each of these classes has close thematic ties to core classes, so I'd treat them as one of the following for role model purposes.

Cavalier: Fighter or paladin

Oracle: Cleric

Magus: Bard or wizard

Have you seen the German film "Die Farbe" based on "The Colour from Out of Space"? If not you might want to. :)

I know I should be asking Sutter this. But In our solar system we have detected possible signs of life on many moons around gas giants in our solar system. (1. The red tinge of the ice on Europa is quite possibly caused by bacteria much like bacteria here on earth. 2. Anomalous readings on Titan that would be consistent with creatures breathing, as well as having a chemically active atmosphere rich with carbon compounds which on helped to lead to life, 3. Enceladus also has a internally heated salt water ocean. It is the only place other than earth we have observed to be hydrothermally active, conditions ripe for chemosynthetic life.) My question is are the moons of the gas giants in Golarions Solar system equally full of life?

Honestly, this is what drove my group away from the setting. Curious why you think this is true? History keeps advancing in the real world, hardly makes it a barrier to entry. With things like wikis nowadays it is even easier to keep track of metaplot changes.

Also, for the upcoming Occult Adventures, do you anticipate any new Mythic options for the new classes eventually?

I suspect that while Paizo like people checking out the Pathfinderwiki.com or Archives of Nethys, they still like it even more when people give Paizo money for that information so that James & company can feed their cats, keep Bulmahn in scotch, and Lisa and Vic in Star Wars paraphenalia a bit longer.

Running an advancing timeline would inevitably make books obsolete at a faster rate.

And a question for James: Have you read any of Liane Merciel's non-Pathfinder novels? (And if you haven't, I'm just gonna mention that Heaven's Needle is basically a well-written paladin and his ranger friend in a dungeon of survival horror, and River King's Road is kind of like a River Kingdoms slice of life with mustard gas summoning wizards and some cool political scheming (also, baking).

They are, on average, MUCH more full of life. Golarion's system has adventure opportunity (aka living creatures to encounter) everywhere, pretty much.

We do it the way we do it because most folks prefer it that way, and because it's easier to manage the setting, and because we don't want to self-obsolete our products or set the precident that you can't start playing an AP until you've played the ones that came before.

Not so much. There's some Mythos-friendly elements in Occult Adventures, but it's not the book to do full-on Lovecraftian stuff.

To be accurate, we have identified places where life may be PLAUSIBLE, but we have yet to detect any actual sign of life. Big difference.

Is there a module or scenario on an undead planet (e.g. Eox) and where did the idea of Eox come from?

Exactly, I meant things like, how do Psychic Magic users interact with Mythic Paths like Archmage or Hierophant?
