Not sure how much water that carries with me, since all the people I know who have actually been in snow-related accidents or fender benders out here in Seattle are those who claim to know how to drive in winter weather and spent many years living in places where they got lots of experience doing so. Snow in Seattle is a really weird combination...

It's not just Seattle, I've lived in Nevada, Washington (the state), Oregon, California (Lake Tahoe! Woot!), Missouri, Montana and now Texas. Everywhere people who claim they "know how to drive in snow" tend to get in more accidents than people who don't say anything about it. Half the time, I only hear the "know how to drive in snow" line in defense of an accident they caused.

This may be a bit longwinded to get to the question but...

I've seen your responses to the RP in AP thread and it got me to thinking about other things you've said. You've also said that Paizo is protective of their AP design philosophy but...

Have you considered publishing or writing a 64/96 pg book that would be the outline of an AP? Something that could fill in major maps, major NPCs and the plot? Maybe a book like that could help GMs fill in all of their own details easier in a sense as there would be less there.

(and thanks! I love how interactive you guys are on the forums)

Sorry, my question is actually semi-serious.

So, uh, it seems Ben Parker lacks parts 3+ of Kingmaker in using it to train kids from Uganda: is there anything that we could do or Paizo could set up that others could support or something to get that to them, that you could think of?

Is it known who first discovered/invented being a Magus? Would there be schools or forms named for that person if it's known?

I think breaking out of the box of pure high fantasy is a great thing and entirely in the spirit of the history of the game. It took a while to get to this sort of AP but I'm sure it will be amazing.

I wish I had I chance to tell you that at PaizoCon, honestly.

Also, I think moving the Con to Memorial Day is an excellent idea. It makes the summer better for you and your colleagues, I'd imagine. Oh. Question:

1. Do you agree?

PS. Thank you to Paizo for still keeping it on a holiday weekend for all the parental gamer units, out there. Though hopefully it doesn't conflict with any of the Star Wars movies.

1bis. Also, what do you think of the reports of At the Mountains of Madness possibly being PG-13?

1) I actually kind of wish we hadn't moved it, frankly, since the earlier PaizoCon happens, the more it disrupts the busiest time of the year—the ramp up of getting Gen Con products ready and out the door. In that way, it has a real chance of making Spring a lot more hectic than normal while not really lessening the impact on the summer stuff since the actual PaizoCon impact on editorial when the convention happens is relatively minor (one or two lost days of "work" is it, as opposed to Gen Con, where we lose 1-2 weeks). I'm not sure why they moved it, but I'm sure they're good reasons.

1bis. I think that dramatically increases the chances of the movie actually being made, and that is good. The last few things Guillarmo del Toro has been involved in, though, have been disappointments on one level or another, and advance word on the screenplay that's floating around is that it feels less like AtMoM and more like a sequel to The Thing. Which is not a BAD thing from a movie viewpoint, but is disappointing from an AtMoM viewpoint. I'm keeping my expectations back as a result. There are PLENTY of intense, well-made, freaky PG-13 movies. There are some gory elements in AtMoM, but you can accomplish a lot with suggestion and what not. And PG-13 movies just make more money than R movies, so a better chance for a Lovecraft movie to make Hollywood think he's a viable author for conversion to a high-budget film (which would basically require a blockbuster) would be welcome.

1- Ever consider training some sort of deputy continuity wrangler? Not as someone's sole job title obviously, but just find the biggest information sponge(s) in the editing department, sit them down one day, and really drill various facts about the setting into their heads so they can catch weird slip-ups in the books you don't see before they go to print?

That or just make like TV writers and draft a quick Golarion Bible to pass around and remind everyone how only these deities have paladins, oracles don't really do the patron thing, dwarf women don't grow beards, elves have solid eyes, there are no half-halflings, etc. Force everyone on staff to keep a copy on hand when they're writing.

2- On a related note, do you know if there's any chance Pathfinder Unchained might take a crack at revising age charts? Squeeze in a fix to the tiefling/aasimar maturing slower than humans, maybe standardize those extra years for classes involving a lot of study to kill the jokes about elves repeating so many grades in magic school?

1) As a matter of fact, that' s the main reason we hired Mark Moreland several years ago.

2) Nope. That's not the point of Unchained. Using new books to squeeze in errata is a sloppy way to handle errata. Nor am I interested in making changes to long-standign traditional game elements (like elf aging) just to capitulate to jokers. Jokers are gonna find things to mock and joke about regardless, and constantly changing the game in an attempt to prevent them is a losing prospect akin to changing demons to tanar'ri just to appease a portion of the public who will never be appeased.

How "robotic" or how "human" are Androids in the PFRPG Campaign Setting?

Are they more like the Terminator, who has a fleshy appearance but speaks robotically and has metallic parts beneath? Or are they more akin to David from Prometheus, who is more "fleshy"?

There's not alot of info on rolelaying an Android, and I was wondering if you could explain a little more about their physiology and behaviors, or point us to future books that explore Androids in depth.

Good evening James! I hope Paizocon was a blast for all involved! Been stewing on some questions and figured now is as good as any time to ask!

1. Is there any movie or TV show from your childhood that just always gets you in the mood for adventure?
2. Which monster makes you feel the most dread when your GM uses it against your character/party?
3. Is it fair to say that the Inner Sea Region has more corporeal undead while Tian Xia has more incorporeal? Maybe it's just the naming conventions that make me feel that way.
4. Which daemonic harbinger do you find the most intriguing based on its areas of concern?
5. There's at least one famous lich mentioned in Jade Regent, are there any other famous Tian liches that are known?
6. Like Tolguth in The Realm of the Mammoth Lords, is there anywhere in Tian Xia that one might unexpectedly find dinosaurs? Also, are there mammoths in Hongal or can they not make it over The Wall of Heaven?
7. The recently saw The Dark Crystal for the first time, and while the puppetry, set design and art direction were all amazing I left the film feeling underwhelmed. Seen any movies recently that, while having many good aspects, left you feeling underwhelmed?

And this isn't a question but I just saw the cover for the 2nd Iron Gods book and I am PUMPED. Really looking forward to that AP!

Thank you for your time once again!

Paizocon was GREAT fun!

1) Big Trouble in Little China. The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad. Conan.

2) Trolls, because they've killed more of my characters than any other creature. They were criminally under CR'd in 3rd edition, with their rend attack being a superkiller. ANY monster with rend in 3rd edition was, in fact. Girallions were bad news too.

3) Not really. It's certainly not a design philosophy.

4) Folca. If by "intriguing" you mean "drop-dead horrifying." But Cixyron, Diceid, Foqorolos, and Xsistaid are all contenders...

5) There are, but they're not famous here among Pathfinder customers/fans yet, since we haven't invented these famous liches yet.

6) There are dinosaurs in Minata and Nagaji and Valashmai, but that's expected. I suspect there's at least one lost valley in the Wall of Heaven that has dinosaurs. There are mammoths in Hongal without the need of them migrating all the time.

7) Yes. Pacific Rim is probably the one that fits that description the best for me lately.

No worries! Those who use prehistoric avatars get special wall of text dispensations.

What if one's avatar is so old that it predates avatars and thus doesn't actually exist, meaning the person has no avatar?

To add a Golarion query or two to that, however, some things on Mortal Heralds (the path ability) and domains that I'd like to get your opinion on:

1) When picking it, you choose one domain from those offered by your deity. Would you allow a character to pick it more than once to gain extra domains offered by the deity and increase the number of communes per day the herald was capable of doing?

2) When picking the domain, what about subdomains? Can they choose a subdomain? Do they just get any subdomains that the deity offers for that domain? Was there any intent that you're aware of regarding subdomains?

3) In creating a mortal herald, a deity is infusing part of their essence into the mortal. How easy is it for them to retrieve that essence? Can a mortal become a herald, and then potentially fall from grace, yet retain the essence and go on the run from their former patron?

4) Can the mortal keep the divine essence "secret and safe" and have Golarion deities done this, secreting portions of themselves in trusted mortals as a safeguard against attack or destruction from threats?

5) What would you say is the thematic difference between the Arcane subdomain and the Divine subdomain? Both are for the Magic domain, but if the domain is about seeing the divinity in all things mystical (whether god-granted or not), doesn't the domain already encompass both the arcane and divine viewpoint?

In that case, not only do you get no special dispensation, but you become a faceless entity with whom I have no chance of ever really starting to think of as a person and not some sort of internet bot or sunspot-induced fluke. AKA: get yourself an avatar!!!! ;-)

1) No.

2) You can pretty much choose a subdomain anytime something lets you choose a domain unless the text specifically says otherwise for that domain-granting power. You'd still have to choose from the subdomains granted by the deity. The intent of subdomains was to give us some design space for creating new domains while not bloating the already significant amount of domains in the game, and thus not making a new domain that would be PERFECT for an existing deity that then wouldn't grant the domain after the fact. For example, if we invented a new doman called Undeath, it would be weird and wrong for Urgathoa to not grant this domain, but since the Undeath domain got invented after we published Urgathoa's domains, that's what would happen. And we want all the deities to offer the same amount of domains, so if we did something like a back-door errata to say Urgathoa could grant Undeath, we'd also have to remove one of her current domains, and suddenly you have a deity who grants different domains depending on what books your GM uses. By making Undeath a subdomain, we can append it to Urgathoa and not have to worry about any of those problems.

3) They can retrieve it at any time pretty much whenever they want, at which point the mortal loses the power but does not get the option to replace that power with something else. AKA: If you take Mortal Herald, don't annoy your deity.

4) Doesn't work that way.

5) Arcane is about wizard-themed spells, and Divine is about cleric-themed spells. And having a Domain encompass a subdomain's themes is, in fact what a subdomain is all about. In this case it's just more obvious.

I know every clan in Sarkoris had their own unique pantheon, but which are the most common gods (in addition to Iomedae of course) that are venerated in Mendev? I'm thinking of a sort of "Mendevian Pantheist" character who venerates the gods that are most active in fighting the Worldwound as they're the gods who'll help him get revenge for his people and fallen Sarkoris.

You might be thinking about polytheist. Pantheist just means you believe that everything in the universe is part of a single all-encompassing, immanent God. And this singular God isn't a personal or humanized God like, say, the Christian god. So it'd really be one vow. Though still be a hard one to figure out.

(and thanks! I love how interactive you guys are on the forums)

The creation of a 6-month long AP is already pretty much a full time job for the AP developer, especially when the developer is also the one who needs to outline and develop one or two Campaign Setting books that dovetail into the AP (which is what I did for Wrath of the Righteous, and sort of what I did with Iron Gods). Top that off with the AP developer often needing to come in and help out with other lines like the PFS scenarios or the hardcover books or whatever, and there's not a lot of time to add another 64 page book (let a lone a 96 page one) that further expands the AP's footprint. And on top of that... why would a 64 page book be enough? No matter how "complete" we might feel we were being... there'd always be more information that we could have put in there. Heck... you more or less admit this by not being able to say just a 64 page book... you put a "or 96 page" qualifier in there.

Adventure Paths are awesome, and folks love them, and I'm SUPER grateful for that. But it's also not a topic that has a finite amount of information. We could indeed go on for an extra 64 pages or an extra 6,400 pages to generate more and more info for any of our Adventure Paths... but the fact of the matter is that at some point, we need to move on to the next Adventure Path. And we can't do that if we're still developing the previous one.

Furthermore... in my opinion, if there's a gap that's a major missing element like a map or an NPC or the like that the AP absolutely needed, that needs to be in the AP itself, not hidden in a support book.

And in any event, I kind of feel like we DO offer something like this already.

Shattered Star had the Magnimar book.

Wrath of the Righteous had the Worldwound book and Demons Revisited.

Iron Gods has the Numeria book and the Technology Guide.

All of that, taken together, pretty much has us running at capacity. And it's not something "hiring more people" would really help, because the person developing the AP is the subject matter expert and is the one who needs to be involved in all of it.

They're like the androids in Alien, Aliens, Prometheus, and Blade Runner.

There's very shortly going to be a fair bit more information about androids. A six page GM-focused article appears in the first Iron Gods, and they've got more information for players coming in the People of the Stars player's companion.

We actually list the most common deities for each region in the Inner Sea World Guide in that region's opening stat block. Mendev's most common deity is Iomedae; there are obviously other deities worshiped there, but not to the extent that Iomedae is, and not to the extent that any one other deity is an obvious choice for "second most worshiped" in the region. AKA: Pretty much any deity is a fine choice for Mendev... but the core deities (as normal) are the more often worshiped ones.

True, I was thinking about polytheist. But the answer remains the exact same for a pantheist, as it works out. It depends on the nature of the paladin's beliefs, but being a paladin, those beliefs are law and good oriented.

The most compelling to me? Non-human aliens, because it's dangerously arrogant to assume that humanity is the most common body shape out there. My answer changes, though, if you're asking about what's most compelling as alien races for PCs to play in an RPG... in that case it's humanoid aliens, because that's what we are and that's what the game assumes. I'd rather focus on how my character fits into the world than get annoyed that I can't wear magic boots because I'm playing a creature that doesn't have feet.

Are we going to hear anything about eyeless krakens at GenCon?

I am running a campaign of my own creation with the BBEG being Tar Baphon and it its a mythic campaign. I am in later levels wanting to go to the Isle of Terror. I have a bunch of Tar Baphons followers there capturing people and turning them undead and general experimentation. I have seen lots of references to an unsprang trap TarBaphon set for Aroden. I would like your opinion on what that should be.
Thank you from a new DM

Another question. If you were to make a setting with a ditheistic set of gods (think one god of good fighting one god of evil), how would you do domains for clerics? Would you allow clerics to take any two domains, or would you have a set of saints with domains that a cleric can choose from?

At this point, I'm not sure we've actually revealed what that trap is in print. Originally, I had a region in the Darklands called Gluttondark down in Orv deep under the Isle of Teror; it was a spherical vault that Tar-Baphon had taken over and created a portal to the negative material plane within, and the trap was that he was going to try to trap Aroden in there. I cut the location for space reasons and word count reasons, and then later used the name Gluttondark as a realm in the Abyss that had nothing to do with Orv or Tar-Baphon, so if I decide to revisit that, it'll need a new name. You might find some use in those fragments for your campaign though!

I would probably make the two gods Sarenrae and Rovagug and give them each a lot more than 5 domains each. In fact, I'd probably open it up entirely to let the clerics chose from any domain, save for the few alignment ones or other super thematic ones that just don't make sense.

The fact that there are so many domains is a result of having a pantheon model, though. If the core game assumed 1 or 2 deities, the right solution would be to redesign the cleric entirely.

Beyond what we've said about him in Dungeons of Golarion and Mythic Realms... I'm not yet ready to say more about that subject.

Needless to say, whatever you do with it in your game should be something that should push a 20th level party to their absolute limit. Mythic tiers should probably be needed to survive.

So, uh, it seems Ben Parker lacks parts 3+ of Kingmaker in using it to train kids from Uganda: is there anything that we could do or Paizo could set up that others could support or something to get that to them, that you could think of?

That's something that our PR or Customer Services departments should be made aware of.
How should I go about doing that?

Simplest method would be to email customer.service@paizo.com.

Posting on the customer service threads works too, though!

They're SUPER busy, of course, so don't expect immediate responses.

I have a question about spell research:

In the case of spotanious casters, will the newly developed spell take up one of the "spells known" slots?

What knowledge skill does the Oracle use in their spell research? Will that matter on what kind of nature their mystery is? ( i.e that Dark Tapestry might be "Planes", Metal might be a mix of "Arcana" and "Engineering" etc. )

Do the spell researcher *need* a creation feat, such as the scribe scrolls feat to make scrolls of their spell, and how can they even research this kind of spell if they dont want to have it prepared?

The newly developed spell does not take up one of her spells known slot unless she has one left open at the time. A good house rule would be to allow the sorcerer the option to immediately replace a currently known spell with the new spell just researched, but it'd be better to have that spell linger among the sorcerer's research until she gained a level where she gained a spell slot of the appropriate level. This is one of the areas that wizards should, in other words, be better than sorcerers.

Oracles should use Knowledge (religion).

Spell research does not require item creation feats. If you want to make a scroll of the spell, you DO need Scribe Scroll. If you don't, then the spell ends up written on several pages in the same format you'd see in a spell book more or less; other spellcasters as appropriate could learn the spell by studying it in the same way a wizard learns a spell by studying another's spellbook, but wouldn't be able to cast the spell as if it were a scroll.

Thanks!

EDIT:

I made this! I can't afford to actually ship things over seas right now (new child being born in December, and we're on a single income: a high-school teacher's!), hence a lack of direct offer on my part.

But I can mention and ask!

There needs to be a series of pictures of you chasing the Paizonians around the office with this shirt. Preferably while wearing The Gauntlet. Maybe with a Goblin Plushy riding your back?

What would a pantheist paladin act like?
Like a lawful good champion of law and good. Beyond that... it depends entirely on the nature of the paladin's pantheon. And no, I'm not interested in designing vows for every possible pantheon combination... ;-)
You might be thinking about polytheist. Pantheist just means you believe that everything in the universe is part of a single all-encompassing, immanent God. And this singular God isn't a personal or humanized God like, say, the Christian god. So it'd really be one vow. Though still be a hard one to figure out.

Faiths and Philosophies refers to it as Pantheism, along with the Pantheistic Blessing feat. This was something the forums discussed for a while after the book came out. I used Pantheist because that was the character stuff described in the book.

By the way, James, how would a person descended from Sarkorian refugees living in Mendev grow up without getting purged by someone like Hulrun? And speaking of Hulrun, I understand that...

WOTR SPOILER:
...his death and being used as a puppet by a vermelek in The Worldwound Incursion is to heighten the dramatic stakes and give room for Irabeth and the PCs to emerge as leaders from the crisis, but it feels like it sort of cheapens Hulrun's impact to the players, who, unless they're Golarion afficionados already, have probably not heard of him before playing Wrath of the Righteous. Even if it's mentioned in passing that he's Kenabres' leader and most infamous inquisitor, known for his harsh purges and stuff in recent years, I feel this is something that should be SHOWN to the PCs rather than TOLD, otherwise all the ink spilled about him already feels wasted.

That's part of why I get so agitated and paranoid about canon and stuff. When I want to develop an arc or plot off something, and then the next book comes out and says "He dies in this one," it throws me off the rails, or when a book mentions something going on that we've already dramatically altered through play (The recent books about Numeria and such talking about Pitax and Irovetti as if they're still around when Kingmaker has the PCs trash them as part of their rise to power).
