This recently came up over on the rules forums, so I thought I'd ask James' opinion over here.

James: When a spell has a particular area of effect, or specifies a range 'tying' two targets together, when is that range measured - is it checked constantly throughout the round, or only at the end of the turn after everyone's movement is complete?

Two examples:

1. Invisibility Sphere states that any creature within a 10-foot radius of the caster at the time of casting is invisible. It also states that if someone who is invisible due to the sphere leaves that area, the spell effect ends. Does this 'check' occur at the end of the round (after both caster and subject have moved), or is it a constant check, meaning that the spell ends instantly if the subject moves more than 10 feet from the caster?

Shield Other says that if the caster and the target move out of range (25' + 5' per caster level) the effect ends. Is this checked at the end of the round (after both party's movements) or is it checked constantly?

Spoiler:
I've always assumed that it was checked 'constantly', so if you move out of range at any point the effect ends; however, an argument came up that because the actions in a round all occur during the same 6-second period (i.e., roughly simultaneously) the subject's and caster's 'movements' would occur at the same time, and the spell would only end if you ended the round outside the area of effect or range of the spell.

James,

What is your favorite Mythic spell?

Spoiler:
Mine is Mythic Baleful Polymorph, but its a tough call between all of the Mythic spells whose augments possess amazing storyline potential. (Modify Memory comes to mind as an awesome one.)

How much have the various Ask (insert name here) threads helped, hurt, or shaped what you guys do at Paizo for Pathfinder and Golarion?

Is allowing players and npcs to add nexavar to bronze to overcome cold iron damage reduction something interesting?

How long have the properties of Nexavar been known?

Since Nexavar makes a blueish metal is allowing it to make a blue glass a good idea?

Actually... nexavar is no longer part of Golarion. (I felt it was a far too convenient and kind of lazy way to explain why the Worldwound hasn't expanded, and also sort of undermined the accomplishment of the Iomedan crusade as a result, and so it's been removed from the world as of Inner Sea World Guide.)

Since nexavar is not part of Golarion anymore... I don't really have much else to say about it—if you want to keep its presence in your version of Golarion, though, that's fine! :-)

So...

A PFS boon came out at Gen Con 2013 that involved characters receiving weapons made of Nexavarian Steel. I know that the novella "Certainty" came out in 2010 and you made the above comment in 2012, but with the focus the Worldwound is getting with Wrath of the Righteous and PFS Season 5...has something changed regarding Nexavarian Steel / Nexavar?

Thanks!

On Golarion? Yes, although it's really rare, and generally only happens to clerics who have low Int, Wis, and/or Cha scores. For other divine casters it's perhaps more common.

1) I was looking at the lyrakien entry on the Pathfinder wiki, and it references the Skinsaw Murders book, where they're explicitly linked to Desna and only serve the familiars of worshipers of Desna. Given that was back in the 3.5 era, I was wondering, would you still consider that canonical for the Golarion setting?

2) Do you personally think that non-animal improved familiars should have their intelligence lowered by becoming a familiar if the intelligence a familiar gets would be lower than their normal intelligence?

3) If you could acquire a familiar or an improved familiar in real life somehow, whether a regular familiar or an improved familiar, what familiar would you pick? I'm guessing either a compsognathus or a quasit myself, but I could be wrong!

1) Still canonical. Lyrakien are closely tied to Desna's faith.

2) Nope. An improved familiar's Int score should be what it normally is for one of its kind.

3) Cat, if we're limited to real-world critters. But if anything is possible... dimorphodon or pseudodragon!

For the incoming Worldwound-based campaign, I was considering a cleric + divine scion character.

Reading the description I've now a doubt that maybe you can resolve: in the Divine Wrath power it states that "damaging spells deal +1 point of damage per die against creatures with an alignment subtype that matches the divine scion’s opposition alignment".
If I interpret this correctly, the power should them only work on creatures that have the specific subtype evil, or good, or whatever, so almost exclusively outsiders, not on all creatures of that alignment, like for example characters or humanoid NPC.
In fact, according to the description of the subtypes, it would affect such a creature even if its alignment were different from the subtype.

On the other hand, later, in the True Scion capstone power, the language is different, stating "Her divine wrath ability now deals +2 points of damage per die against creatures of the appropriate alignment.".

So, the intended Divine Wrath effect is:

a) It only ever affect creatures of the subtype <alignment>

b) It affect all creatures with <alignment>

c) It affect both creatures of subtype <alignment> and simply <alignment>

d) At 4th level it affect creatures of the subtype <alignment>, but at 10th level it affect all <alignment> creatures too.

"Creatures with an alignment subtype that matches the divine scion's opposition alignment" does indeed limit the effect to creatures of that subtype. So... "A".

I liked in 2E how green dragons had a poison breath weapon, and I'm trying to think of how to handle that in Pathfinder. Do you think 1 point of Constitution damage per age category, requiring a Ref save for half, is too much/appropriate?

I wouldn't make it a Reflex save. I'd make it a Fort save, since poison works off Fortitude most often. And compare to the strength draining breath weapon of the umbral dragon.

Poison is a MUCH more dangerous weapon than mere damage, though... especially on a breath weapon the dragon can use every 1d4 rounds.

1: What's your take on the whole martial vs. spellcaster debate?
2: Can you please make a swashbuckler class? I think many, many people on these boards are itching to play a dashing, agile swordsman.

1) I think that it's a tempest in a teapot. Martials and spellcasters do different things. In games I run or play in, I've not seen any evidence that one class is "better" than the other. It's really the GM's job to make sure ALL the classes represented by his/her players are equally supported by the particular campaign after all.

2) I've wanted a swashbuckler class for a long, long time. I'm not really part of the design team though, so I'm not the one who'd get to make a swashbuckler class. You'll need to talk to Jason and his team.

There'll be ALL SORTS of creatures in Iron Gods. Just as Wrath of the Righteous has more than demons, and Skull & Shackles has more than pirates, and Council of Thieves has more than thieves, and Second Darkness has more than drow, Iron gods will have ALL the monster types represented. It won't be Non-Stop science fiction stuff. It's going to be a blend.

Clockworks are unlikely to play any role at all in Iron Gods; they're not robots. Robots are much different than clockworks.

4: Valley of the Brain Collectors
5: Palace of Fallen Stars
6: The Divinity Drive

There's not a lot more to say about it yet though. I'm still outlining it. More info to come!

Beastiary 5 2015 Numeria edition?

just a guess btw

No.

Just because we're doing a Numeria-themed AP doesn't mean every book we do in 2014 or 2015 will be science fiction. In fact, the bulk of our non-AP books during the run of Iron Gods from August 2014 to January 2015 will NOT be Sci-Fi. Golarion remains primarily a fantasy setting.

If the popularity of Iron Gods does something really unexpected... THEN we'll start thinking about doing more. For now, though, it'll be the AP and a few support books and that's pretty much it.

Isn't Ydersius a full deity? I think he's referred to as a demigod a few times in the Serpent's Skull AP, but the Pathfinder Wiki mentions that he offers five or even six domains (Chaos, Evil, Nobility, Scalykind, War, and a notation of Animal as well). Or is the number of domains an error, and he's supposed to only grant four?

And is Arazni still a demigod after what she went through with Tar-Baphon and Geb? Or is she some other sort of mythic individual now in her undead state?

James Jacobs wrote:
One of them would have been the first defeat of Deskari in Sarkoris a while back, when he drove the demon lord and his armies out of Sarkoris, through Mendev, and into the big lake.

The book Liar's Blade talks about how the imprisonment of Kholerus (an extremely powerful nascent demon lord and possibly Deskari's "son") was involved with that defeat of Deskari. Assuming that the various things he did were accomplishing his Mythic "trials" to continue increasing in power, did that play a part in the overall trial?

Will anything in Wrath of the Righteous mention something about Kholerus? Or are there no plans to incorporate it?

Ydersius is a demigod. As is Arazni.

Ydersius should only grant 4 domains.

The events in Liar's Blade do not play a part in Wrath of the Righteous at all.

If Arazni is still a demigod, does she have domains and the ability to grant spells? I had thought that after her reanimation as a lich she had lost her divine powers.

This will be answered next month in "Mythic Realms." Where we stat Arazni up.

3. What is the base outline of the adventure path? Themes? Spoilers?

5.Will there be the possibility of Psionic classes in this book?

6.Will the Swashbuckler be in this? and if so what type of hybrid class will it be like? Fighter/Rogue?

1) Iron Gods will not be a Mythic AP. It will use a few mythic elements here and there, just as we sometimes use spells from Ultimate Magic or monsters from Tome of Horrors or feats from Advanced Player's Guide and so on, but Iron Gods itself will not be fore mythic PCs.

2) That would make sense, and would follow our normal pattern of book releases, but we haven't yet made any announcements of this kind.

3) Science vs. Faith. Dominion of the Black. Artificial Intelligences. That's all I'm giving out for the time being. The outline isn't yet written, and I won't be revealing much more about that anyway for several months anyway.

4) All of these are a "wait and see" answer. There WILL be a public playtest for the book in a few months.

5) Zero. Psychic magic isn't appropriate content for this book.

6) I'd love to see a swashbuckler in this book, but I can only suggest and beg Jason to do something like this. You'll have to ask him if there's one in the book or not. It's not my place to reveal.

Nope; that's the definition, more or less, of an oracle.

Clerics worship one deity. Multiple deities (even only 2) create a pantheon, and that's what oracles are focused on.

You can have a cleric who adheres to a pantheon, but a cleric will always have one deity in that pantheon that he/she devotes their time to above all others.

Not James, but I do have an answer for you. Under the rules as written a Cleric doesn't have to choose a deity at character creation. I've always taken that to mean you can exemplify an ideal or set of ideals instead. It doesn't seem a stretch to make one of these Clerics who pays homage to all deities who support his or her ideals. This could easily lead to a Cleric who worships all three of those deities equally.

Actually... in Golarion, a cleric DOES have to choose a deity, and since the Godclaw only exists in Golarion rules, a cleric of the Godclaw does need to pick a single deity.

I really really REALLY wish we hadn't put the "you don't have to worship a deity" bit into the core rulebook for a cleric. It's like saying a wizard doesn't need a spellbook or a fighter doesn't need to fight.

Generic Villain wrote:
Why isn't Xoveron mythic? I would have thought that, of all things, a demigod would qualify as such. Is it because the mythic subtype would have made him too powerful? Also, do mythic abilities and spells treat him as non-mythic?

He's more powerful than mythic, frankly.

Demon lords are built to be CR 26 to CR 30 foes, and the mythic rules, believe it or not, don't really let you do that type of creature that well "out of the box," since you can have at most 10 ranks, and it takes 2 ranks to increase CR by +1... a CR 20 creature with 10 ranks is only a CR 25 creature.

When designing demon lords, I wanted them to be usable and understandable by all GMs... not just those familiar with mythic rules. Sure... you need mythic characters to take them on, but that doesn't mean that demon lords (and similarly powerful creatures) have to use mythic rules.

That said, when they're on their abyssal realms, they do gain some mythic powers. They're treated as mythic beings in this case, but when off their planes they're not, which is one way that mythic characters (who at level 20 tier 10 power would be, basically, facing an average encounter of CR 25) can handle fights against creatures that can be up to +5 above their average party level.

And in retrospect, kind of a mean one.

A question about the Daggermark Assassin's Guild. What faith(s) would be most common amongst them? Norgorber? If it is Norgorber, which of the four aspects would be most venerated?

Norgorber, mostly as Blackfingers but also as the Gray Master.

Hi James,

I know we all signed an NDA at the Secrets of Golarion panel but Justin Franklin and I just wanted to say "Thanks" again for letting us in on how Aroden died. It's so simple that it's just brilliant.

My question is one that I didn't get to ask why at the panel. Is there any plan to investigate how the established Golarion 20 will react to these new Gods?

Thanks again.

Is this something that ACTUALLY happened, or are you just trolling the thread? Because if the former is true then I'm going to become even more frustrated in my attempts to completely understand the canon of the setting.

It didn't happen. Sorry for the confusion.

Hope you enjoyed GenCon!

Raise the Dead (Su): As a standard action, you can summon a single skeleton or zombie to serve you. The undead creature has a number of Hit Dice equal to your oracle level. It remains for a number of rounds equal to your Charisma modifier. At 7th level, you can summon a bloody skeleton or fast zombie. At 15th level, you can summon an advanced skeleton or zombie. You can use this ability once per day plus one additional time per day at 10th level.

How is this supposed to work? Does it make a humanoid zombie with advanced HD? Can you use it on a dead body of something else?

If this is from Mythic Adventures, you should ask the question in that thread so it can be FAQed.

My guess: Just give it the extra HD, and the math will do the rest. You don't have to worry about the thing's CR, since it's not a self-contained monster.

Oh great and mighty and tyrannosaurusly JJ

What do you think are Paizo's defining books (hardcover or softcover) respectively for covering the Mwangi Expanse and Varisia? Loved the stuff on Mwangi in the ISWG, and Varisia made me curious for more as well.

For more fun with the Mwangi Expanse, check out "Heart of the Jungle" and the Serpent's Skull adventure path.

For more Varisia stuff, check out the Varisia Player's Guide, along with the following Adventure Paths:
Rise of the Runelords
Curse of the Crimson Throne
Second Darkness
Jade Regent
Shattered Star

And we've put a LOT of Varisia content into various other books as well. It's actually probably the MOST detailed part of our world.

On topic: Knowing you are not a fan of conventions in general, what did you enjoy about GenCon this year? Was the award ceremony overwhelming?

It was what it was. I do enjoy talking to folks about Pathifnder, and the Ennies are always nervewracking and overwhelming. And I got to spend all Saturday in my hotel room with what I think might have been a gall bladder attack or something, so that was no fun... but it was a REALLY successful Gen Con overall... so company morale is high and everyone is gleeful, so that's good!

I'm really really REALLY glad to be back in Seattle though! :-)
