Same question for the various Skymetals?

Do the Aboleths have a training set of Glyphs for young Aboleths called "Rail Cannon 101" ?

It's random.

Also random, although there's a particularly high concentration of skymetals in Numeria.

Nope. Aboleths are serious business.

I just figured they would have made one after the Starfall fiasco.

Whatever CR you want it to be for the adventure you're writing... although in this particular case, I would advise against high CR. Akatas are low CR creatures, and tying their arrival to a super deadly meteor impact event either wipes the PCs out because it's too deadly, or results in monsters that don't challenge the PCs because the akatas aren't high enough CR to match the super deadly CR of the meteor.

I see your point, thanks.

*shrugs*

Akatas fall, everyone dies :3

Are the skymetals open content?

(I have a very vague idea for a possible Old West-ish setting involving "The Seven Cities of Skymetal...")

That reminds me - how big was the ship that crashed in Numeria? I know it's bigger than a city since a chunk of it (granted; the biggest chunk of it) was big enough to be turned into a capital city.

Just how big was it? Size of a modern-day metropolis like Sydney or Seattle? Size of Florida? Mind you; if it was as big as the latter then the Darklands'd probably have a new skylight. :P

The skymetal rules are open content, as are their names, but their in-world flavor is not.

I figured it was a Sdrawkcab Name but I was just wondering if their was any deeper meaning.

When I googled Odradue one of the first things that came up was an image of some sort of device that plugs into your ear to make noise so I thought it had something to do with Akata's being deaf

Cool name nonetheless, was just me over thinking everything :3

Do you ever over think names or scenarios James?

I'm okay with adding flaws to a PC that overall weakens the PC, but having a character flaw system that grants, say, a bonus feat for your flaw, is in and of itself a flaw in game design. Because no matter what flaw, a good player will be able to minimize or just totally negate that flaw's impact on their character, and suddenly it's like they have a bonus feat for free.

Character flaws are a particularly insidious form of power creep.

Yeah, I can see your point. Shadowrun suffers from that, I think. Though, what if a specific boon were attached to each flaw (again, like Curses)? Still something you don't like?

If it functions like an oracle curse, I'm more okay with it.

But yeah... every single game I've seen flaws presented in have been basically power gamer challenges. They're one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of point-based character building systems these days.

Yeah, I definitely agree. The reason I ask is because I like characters to have flaws, but I don't want to just roleplay a character that's plain worse. You should consider some curse-like flaws for the future of pathfinder!

You've said before that people with Afflicted Lycanthropy don't auto change alignment so I was wondering if I could get some more in depth insight into an Afflicted's sense of being.

1. The bestiary entry for the template mentions that the afflicted gets a will save after their first transformation to remember what they did and become aware of their condition.

2. Does this save only have to be made once and from then on out the person is aware of themselves while transformed or does the will save need to be made every transformation?

3. These are not alignment related questions (unless the person's alignment plays a part on seeing if they remain in control of their new form), I merely want to know what separates the lycanthropes that go feral and go on mindless uncontrollable rampages while transformed and those who are fully aware of themselves and in control.

As always any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Do you think you'd ever have a Vampire-themed 'arc' or Adventure Path, like Dawnguard from Skyrim?

Or perhaps have the Iconics get sucked into a 'Time Rip' and get spat out into the distant past, during the (and forgive me, the exact name of this period escapes me) 'Great Darkness', when Golarion was shrouded in dust, and the Orcs first started to appear on the surface of Golarion, driven upwards by the Dwarves?

An addendum to the lycanthrope question:

Quote:
A creature that catches lycanthropy becomes an afflicted lycanthrope, but shows no symptoms (and does not gain any of the template's adjustments or abilities) until the night of the next full moon, when the victim involuntarily assumes animal form and forgets his or her own identity. The character remains in animal form until the next dawn and remembers nothing about the entire episode (or subsequent episodes) unless he makes a DC 20 Will save, in which case he becomes aware of his condition.

Whether the afflicted lycanthrope makes the Will save or not, do the ability score adjustments of the template take effect after the first full moon? That is, a character who has gone through the transformation once, whether they're aware of it or not, takes the +2 Wis and -2 Cha from that point on in their normal form, thus giving other people (or themselves) a chance to notice something different about them (less forceful, more perceptive)?

Why do the people of Golarion keep burying their dead instead of burning their corpses?

I mean a lot of problems with the undead would be solved.

We know that their themes will be getting some play in Wrath of the Righteous, but would Redeemer paladins(from the Advanced Race Guide) themselves be a wise choice for that AP, given their focus on redeeming more monstrous non-outsider types?

2) Do you think that there is a possibility that after the conclusion of the Shattered Star some of Magnimar's citizens decide to relocate to Korvosa?

3) What are political implications for Varisia if the ruler of Korvosa would gain control over the Sihedron?

4) Are there any conditions under which the drow is acceptable choice for the PC in a game set in Varisia?

5) If you would do a Lords of Madness type of book set in Golarion, which races/monsters would it include?

Consider using a dump stat to stand in for your flaw. Playing a character with a bum leg? Dump your Dex. Playing a character who's a little insane. Dump your Wis. Etc. I do this relatively often, and it's actually quite rewarding to play against the numbercrunching hype.

Or play an oracle.

To a certain extent, though, the "I like characters to have flaws but I don't want to just roleplay a character that's plain worse" are opposites.

There are more or less 4-5 demon lords who are close to Nocticula in power—close enough that they're all the same CR. Pazuzu is one of them. I'm still finessing the list of CRs for demon lords, but the article on demon lords in Pathfinder #18 does list some (3.5 and thus out of date) numbers for them. In there, the demons who all tie for highest CR are Abraxas, Dagon, Nocticula, Orcus, and Pazuzu. Those numbers are ALREADY out of date, of coruse, since CR 30 is our cap, and even then, Dagon's lower than CR 30. Cyth-V'sug will probably be rising into that role, but I'm not sure. There might be a few other adjustments as well. Orcus might not stay at the top, for example, and Deskari might move in.

The likelihood of Nocticula being one of the six demon lords we stat in Wrath of the Righteous is, shall I say, Exceptionally High.

The 5th Carrion Crown adventure doesn't count?

Or are you asking for an AP where the PCs all play vampires? In that case, that's very very very unlikely.

But more likely than a time travel AP, which is very very very very very very unlikely.

I mean a lot of problems with the undead would be solved.

Because looking at the world through the lens of an adventure is like looking through a window in a house that looks out onto a swamp and assuming the entire planet is covered by swamps.

Undead are MUCH more common in adventures than they are in day-to-day life in Golarion, and the vast majority of the dead who are buried in the world stay dead. It's not like burying someone gives a 99% chance they'll come back as undead. That chance is probably much less than 1%, overall. If the undead problem were as big as you seem to think, burning the dead would only result in a lot more ghosts and wraiths and specters and the like, right?

Some cultures DO burn their dead, but to others that's taboo or otherwise not a sociological or religious option. And in some areas, doing so is probably illegal, since areas like Nidal and Geb have uses for their dead.

And the redemption themes in Wrath of the Righteous are by no means limited to monsters.

1) A PC.

2) Not really. Certainly not in any number to be really noticed as anything approaching a trend. Magnimar and Korvosa's rivalry has been going on for a LOT longer than the last couple of years, and a change in ruler isn't going to alter decades and decades of ill will.

3) That would likely be a huge step toward Korvosa dominating the region and the entire area being renamed "Korvosa."

4) GM approval of the idea.

5) Aboleth, Seugathi, Elder Thing, Intellect Devourer, Neothelid, Gug, Neh-Thalggu, Sinspawn, Moon Beast, and Yithian would be my top choices.

Sorry James, I meant as in 'the over-arching villain is a Vampire' sort of campaign. Players finding themselves in an unlikely alliance with a Vampire or Dhampir to prevent some sort of Evil 'Master Plan' that could have dire repercussions on the surrounding lands.

Of course, considering Golarion Vampires tend to go crispy in sunlight, rather than sparkle or just get a headache, it tends to take a bit of the 'bite' out of the adventure's drama, when ensuring that your allies are indeed your allies involves taking a picnic out into a field with no shade during the middle of the day.

In a Rise of the Runelords game I'm GM'ing, it has emerged that one of the PCs -- a half-elf from Nirmathas of unknown parentage -- probably shares a father with Tsuto Kaijitsu. The PC and Ameiko plan to go over the Kaijitsu manor carefully in search of relevant info, e.g. hidden bundles of love letters between Atsuii and Monsieur Mystery Elf. Or similar.

As far as I know, Tsuto's father is never named or detailed anywhere. Is there any canon material on him, or am I free to let my creativity run wild?

Hello again, James! Homebrew sessions starting soon here and I wanted to thank you again for the advice on picking up APs to study for ideas. Enjoyed reading RotRL, Kingmaker, and Second Darkness is really cool, even it is done in 3.5 and #5 is full of an extra helping of elves benig massive jerks. Anyways, was hoping to get your take on some things...

1) What's your stance on the inclusion of persistent NPCs in long-term games, like from start to end of an AP?
1a) Would you let the PCs design those NPCs?
1b) How about redesigning them later when they're taken as cohorts via Leadership?

2) For our next homebrew, I'm going to ignore the 'convert gp value to sp value' for the end result needed when crafting mundane items. Reason being that, based on my math, a 5th level expert with a +12 to +15 in Craft(bowyer) needs 2 and a half weeks to make a single regular longbow, which is kind of stupid. My only concern is that this treads on the Master Alchemist feat's territory a little. To compensate, does it sound too powerful to change the text from "When crafting poisons" to "When crafting any alchemical items"?
2b) How about also adding in that the feat allows ranks in Craft(alchemy) to function as prereqs for the Brew Potion feat, kind of like how Master Craftsman does for Craft Wondrous and Craft Arms/Armor?

3) I saw ‘dead magic’ mentioned earlier in the thread, something in the Mana Wastes I think. What is that and how is it different from normal or wild magic? Also, are there other areas on Golarion with these types of 'dead magic'?

4) 4th edition had some neat concepts for item creation and money management. For example, Astral diamonds that were each worth 10k gold as a uniform means of tracking high levels of wealth. My favorite was residuum, a stand-in for expensive material components with spell-casting and enchanting that was created by a 'disenchanting' ritual on magical items. The idea with residuum was the ritual stripped the item of ALL enchants and returned 50% of equivalent value as this arcane-infused powder. What's your take on these concepts being carried over into Pathfinder? Neat? Overpowered? Unnecessary? Stupid?

5) Is it completely outside the realm of believability to have a bad guy learn how to develop a plague or something that grants undead immunities and traits but DOESN'T change how the creature responds to positive or negative energy?

6) As you progress deeper into the Abyss, is there any trend in how the plane looks and/or functions to let you know when you're getting into Qlipoth territory?

7) How complete is Rovagug's desire to destroy everything? Would he simply kill all life? Would this eventually include himself? How about things like the undead and constructs? Would he stop at rending apart all the planets and stars or would he unmake the planes as well? Would he, even temporarily align with other forces to get this done? How does he regard the Outer Gods and their minions in terms of his desire to end everything?

Thanks in advance, appreciate the illumination you provide. Also, please pass onto Wes Schneider that I found the typos in Second Darkness #4: Endless Night to be hilarious. Specifically, how Alicavniss was often referred to, and actually listed in her stat block, as a male and how the one picture of Drow-disguised Amiri chopping up driders was upside down. These made me laugh.

From my (mostly unpublished) Kaijitsu family timeline that I was working with during Jade Regent's first adventure... (spoilered since there are some SIGNIFICANT Jade Regent spoilers in there... and the dates might not 100% match up with the final published info in Jade Regent)

Spoiler:
4685 AR Rokuro arranges to have a beautiful young Tian woman named Atsuii betrothed to his son. Lonjiku and Atsuii are married later in the year at the Sandpoint Cathedral.
4687 Rokuro and Lonjiku travel to Brinewall to finalize the Kaijitsu move south to Magnimar, but when Lonjiku accidently exposes the Amatatsu Seal and alerts the Five Storms, things fall apart. Rokuro sends his son and family south, but the three ships are caught in a violent storm. Two are driven ashore in Brinestump Marsh, while the third bearing Lonjiku is lost in the Varisian Gulf for many weeks. Convinced her family has died, Anya commits suicide. Five Storms oni and ninjas attack and destroy Brinewall, but do not learn that Lonjiku survived the storm, or that his family now lives in Sandpoint. In the midst of her despair over the apparent loss of her husband, Atsuii seeks comfort in the arms of her previous lover from her time in Kintargo, an elven adventurer named Arinellus. He arrives in Sandpoint to comfort Atsuii only three days before a badly damaged ship limps into the harbor. Shocked and relieved to see her husband survived, Atsuii sends a frustrated Arinellus away and spends the next several weeks helping Lonjiku recover from his ordeal and to repair the damage done to the family’s holdings.
4688 All of Atsuii’s hard work at repairing her family after the tragedy nearly falls apart when she gives birth later in the year to a half-elf named Tsuto, the scandalous truth comes out. Enraged, Lonjiku disowns the half-elf and sends him to Turandarok Academy in Sandpoint to be raised as a bastard ward rather than give him the honor of being raised a true Kaijitsu.
4689 Ameiko Kaijitsu is born to Lonjiku and Atsuii. She is destined to be the only one of Lonjiku’s legitimate children, and thus the only Kaijitsu scion with a legitimate claim to the Jade Throne in Minkai.
4702 After a disastrous attempt to reconcile the bad blood between her half-brother and her father results in her brother striking her, Ameiko runs away from home shortly before the events of the “Late Unpleasantness” bring tragedy to Sandpoint. Atsuii Kaijitsu dies during these events of a mysterious fall from the sea cliff near her home.
4703 Word of her mother’s death causes Ameiko to return home, but she finds home as unpleasant as ever. Tsuto walks out on the family at the funeral, leaving Ameiko alone with her bitter father.
4705 Aged 16, Ameiko leaves home for the second time to take up life as an adventurer with several like-minded youths. Her adventuring career lasts just over a year.
4706 Rich from her adventuring success, Ameiko returns to Sandpoint to purchase an old tavern, “The Rusty Dragon,” and scandalizes her father by becoming a bartender and tavern keeper.

1) I approve of this. I do this often in my games, and have done so in some APs like Jade Regent or the upcoming Wrath of the Righteous.

1a) No.
1b) No.

2) Not if you want crafting alchemical items to go faster.
2a) That's fine too, I suppose.

3) Areas of dead magic function as if under the effects of antimagic, essentially. There's no such thing as "wild magic" in Pathfinder—our version of that is called "primal magic." More info exists in Inner Sea Magic.

4) No comment. I avoid talking about 4th edition design stuff since it's impossible for the internet to take my comments on 4E without reading stuff into it. I will say that World of Warcraft uses a similar system for item enchantment, and it's pretty elegant.

5) With good enough writing, nothing is outside the realm of believability.

6) No trend.

7) He doesn't want to kill himself. Destroying everything isn't necessarily his goal either, since that leaves him nothing to destroy. More details appear in Pathfinder #20 about his personality.

Awesome, thanks. I guess I'll just have to take up Arinellus' story after his departure from Sandpoint to include a journey to Crystalhurst and a brief liaison with a human woman there.

3. Okay then, what separates the lycanthropes that go feral and go on mindless uncontrollable rampages while transformed and those who are fully aware of themselves and in control?????????

The storyline.

SInce its right around the corner what music would recommend listening to in preparation and during Wrath of the Righteous?

The soundtrack to Evil Dead! Or any big, bombastic, orchestral soundtrack with scary choirs involved. Things like "The Omen" or "End of Days" or, particularly, "Hellraiser" and "Hellraiser 2."

Obviously, I am not James Jacobs, but you could do much worse for epic sounding music than Two Steps From Hell.

Thankies, although I already had those guys in mind, hehe probably should have put up a disclaimer:3

James,

odd thing came to mind maping out a Kensai black blade magus and i noticed that when appling the kensai archetype to the magus the character would get fighter training twice once at 7th level from kensai archetype and again at 10th level from the standard magus progression.

would they stack or would you get the better of the two?
being that both say that they would stack with existing fighter levels.

Sounds like an error that needs to be brought up in the rules forums for a FAQ attack.

hmm thankies, ill throw in mine as well for anyone interested, Shiro Sagisu - Invasion makes for a great last stand type of encounter against the demonic horde (an image from the back of the Knight of The Inner Sea comes to mind)

Here's a few questions to keep things light. They will mean nothing to gamers who were not around prior to the Internet.

Do you miss the No-SASE Ogre?
Does anyone still feed the poor guy?
What does he eat in the Internet age?

Silver Crusade

From what I've seen of most of the artwork with her fighting does Merisiel prefer to be airborne?

Silver Crusade

Speaking of Evil Dead have you seen the remake?

Nope.

Dunno; he's WotC's responsibility now.

Trolls.
