James, can outsiders, particularly native outsiders, become vampires in the context of Golarion? I am not asking if the rules support this (the Bestiary certainly seems to). I am asking if you think it is appropriate.

Liberty's Edge

1. Is Rasmiran looking kind of like Florida intentional, given that it's pretty much Golarion's Scientology-equivalent (Amongst other things) and Scientology's main power base is in Florida, or is that just a coincidence?

2. Are Atropals ever going to make it into Pathfinder? BEcause, those horrifying undead god-fetuses were one of the best things fro mthe Epic Level Handbook IMHO.

3. Is there any chance of any of the Open Content monsters from the D20 Menace Manual making it into Pathfinder, as there are quite a few (Like the Acid Rainer) that seem like they'd fit well in Golarion.

4. If Golarion's planes are the same planes as in the rest of the D&D Universe, then is there any chance any of the other setting's gods interfering with Golarion's? Like, could ,say, Greyhawk's Zagyg go to mess with Pharasma or Urgathoa for funzies?

5. Continuing with that train of thought, while you've said that the LN plane of Axis is Golarion's equivalent to Sigil, given that Sigil itself is supposed to connect to everywhere in the multiverse, and since I know you can't confirm it elsewhere for copyright reasons, I was wondering has the City Of Doors itself ever connected to Golarion at all?

6. Do any of the Earth pantheons (IE, the Greek, Norse, Aztec, Voudoun, ect. ones) exist in the Pathfinder-verse? And if so, have any of them done anything on Golarion?

7. If somebody put a gun to your head and forced you to make a "Token Good Member Of A Monstrous Race" iconic character, what race and what class would you choose for them?

8. Would you ever want a Pathfinder video game to be made in the style of classic JRPGs, like Final Fantasy 6/Lunar/Breath Of Fire/Barkley Shut Up And Jam: Gaiden/ect. ? I ask because I've never seen a D&D game made in that style, so it'd be a nice change of pace, and because there are too few good JRPGs being made now as-is (Note how the Final Fantasy series has retreated up its own rear).

9. How would you stat up Ronnie James Dio as a bard?

Do you:

1) Change the name of the BBEG into another language's. One that no one at the table understands. (But try to keep the meaning of the name.)

2) Change the name of the BBEG, but keep the language used, to something less obvious.

3) Just slap on another name that sounds cool and fit a BBEG.

4) Don't change the name. Just let the players run with it

5) Do something else....

I change the name of the BBEG if it's really bad.

Ustalav Question:

1) What does the common Ustalavian (?) speak on a day-to-day basis? "Prince of Wolves" suggests most Ustalavs (?) speak Varisian and know at least some Taldane, often more. The Haunting of Harrowstone on the other hand, while giving every NPC with INT>=12 Varisian as a secondary language, gives the farmes with INT 10 only Common (=Taldane) as a language. So...yeah, what does the common Ustalavi (?) speak?

2) Can you think of even more ridiculous names for the people of Ustalav than I just did? o__O

1) Varisian. The reason folks with an INT 10 got Common is because we didn't want language barriers to be a big deal... going forward, though, all Varisians should get that language and Common as free languages. And if you make that change to the Common-only NPCs in Carrion Crown, I won't complain at all.

2) Yes.

James, being that Asmodeus is a god of magic, which of the devil varieties would be most closely associated with, or be most dedicated to arcane magic?

None of them really come to mind as being particularly magic-associated.

And Asmodeus is no more a god of magic than any other deity—his main focus is on contracts, pride, slavery, and tyranny.

The fact that he grants access to the Magic domain doesn't make him a god of magic, though.

Absolutely.

Whether or not it's appropriate depends on the situation... but I can absolutely see vampire demons or vampire tieflings worshiping and serving the demon lord Zura, for example.

And we have a succubus vampire in one of our adventures, as another example.

1) No. I guess that means it's a coincidence.

2) They haven't yet, and I don't believe we have any plans to do so in the future, but never say never.

3) Unlikely... they're too modern in my opinion. But again... never say never.

4) Absolutely there's a chance. Just won't ever happen in print or in official Golarion canon since that's copyright infringement. When it happens it is limited to home games and the GM's whims.

5) For copyright reasons, Sigil is not officially part of the Great Beyond.

6) Yes; the Egyptian pantheon has influenced Golarion in the past. And a deity of Mesopotamian mythology is part of Golarion's deities (Lamashtu). Asmodeus is another example of this. There are certainly more examples.

7) Tiefling.

8) I wouldn't not want it, but I MUCH prefer the western style CRPG over the JRPG games. Unless it's Final Fantasy X2, which broke a fair amount of the cliches that annoy me about JRPGs.

Thanks! I have to say once again that the mere existence of this thread is pure awesome. After considering your answer, my approach was a little different, though: Every Varisian got "Varisian" as main language and "Broken Common" as a secondary one. That way they can still communicate with people talking Common, but they will attract attention and might face minor penalties when using Bluff, Diplomacy and alike. "Common" overwrites "Broken Common", obviously.

Depending on the animal,I might not allow it to actually wear a headband in the first place, due to size and shape differences from what a headband expect to be wrapped around.

If I did allow it, the animal's intelligence would increase by the appropriate amount. It would gain access to the skill ranks associated with the headband, but wouldn't learn how to speak or understand languages. It would not gain any new tricks, but would act a lot smarter.

Aha, but what if linguistics was a skill attached to the headband? This is a common trick we use in my home games so druids can have a smarter companion (since awaken and animal companion dont mix)
If you attach linguistics, and therefore attach a stack of languages, the animal would gain the ability to understand the languages but would not be able to speak. It could scribble out messages though, as best as it could.

Given that an unawakened animal while made intelligent is still not sentient, wouldn't it be easier to rule that the skill simply doesn't work?

Some day, yeah, but not sure when. Depends on if we have more outside app developers approach us with ideas that we like, and if we trust the app developer to actually be able to do something up to our standards of quality.

The one I hate the most is the "angst-ridden androgynous whiny late teen who doesn't really have any redeeming or admirable qualities yet is still for some reason the main character."

The constant random encounters is another one.

Inappropriate cuteness is a third (although I do like cuteness when it IS appropriate).

Musical themes that are all over the board, ranging from classical themes to heavy metal.

The inventory management systems that never seemed to evolve out of having to use a prehistoric controller to sort through.

Games that have less actual game play than they have cut scenes.

Games that spend most of their time on a railroad.

Games that are poorly translated into English, be it subtitles or dialogue.

There is a Lion's Blade prestige class in the Taldor Player's Companion. I have no idea off the top of my head if it's allowed or not in PFS... you'd have to check the big list of allowed content to find out.

Hello, Mr. James Jacobs,

I understand this question should be placed in the Rules forums (Which I did post), but I want to get your opinion on it:

This is pretty much a copy-paste:

Taking a look within the Advanced Race Guide, the hafling has a feat chain that effectively puts him as a frontline support class when taking the total defense action.

Cautious Fighter:
Pre-req - Halfling

When fighting defensively or using total defense, your dodge bonus to AC increases by 2.

Blundering Defense:
Pre-req - Cautious Fighter, Halfling
When you fight defensively or youse the total defense action, allies gain a luck bonus to AC and CMD equal to 1/2 the dodge bonus from the action you are taking. Allies only gain this bonus while they are adjacent to you.

Active Defense:
At 3rd Level, a shielded fighter gains a +1 Dodge bonus to AC when wielding a shield and Fighting Defensively, using combat expertise, or using the total defense.

Acrobatics:
If you have 3 or more ranks in Acrobatics, you gain a +3 dodge bonus to AC when fighting defensively instead of the usual +2, and a +6 dodge bonus AC when taking the total defense action instead of the usual +4

Crane Style:
You take only a -2 penalty on attack rolls for fighting defensively. When using this style and fighting defensively or using the total defensive action, you gain a +1 dodge bonus to your Armor Class

So you sort of see the situation here:

Total Defense with 3 Ranks Acrobatics replaces the +4 AC (Dodge) to a +6 AC (Dodge). Cautious Fighter/Crane Style adds an additional +2/+1 AC (Dodge) when taking the Full Defense Action. Active Defense lets the Shielded Fighter gain a +1 AC (Dodge) when wielding a shield and using the Total Defense Action.

With all of this the math goes to this:

6 (Acro 3) + 2 (Cautious Fighter) + 1 (Shielded Fighter) + 1 (Crane Style) = +10 AC (Dodge) using the Total Defense Action

And rounding this off, going back to the first situation, Blundering Defense.

10/2 = +5 AC (Luck)/CMD to all adjacent allies.

Does all this work out, or there is misreading on all this random synergy?

HA! My tiefling in Rob's Way of the Wicked game has a prehensile tail! I wouldn't say she can support herself on her tail, but she certainly does use it to get into lots of trouble.

But yeah; it can't wield a weapon, so I'd say no to the support body weight.

It only applies to when you fight defensively, to which it will replace the modifier of the +3 (Acrobatics Rank 3) to a +4 (Rod of Balance). Total Defense gains no benefit from it.

Hello James Jacobs; I hope you're having / had a good night.

Do dinosaurs that lived during different periods on Earth all exist at the same time on Golarion?

Thanks!

Is a vampire succubus an outsider or an undead? I'd assume the later, but it doesn't really make sense to me. Which raises another question: Are evil outsiders such as demons/devils healed by/dependent upon positive energy? Again, I'd assume as much... but it's weird.

Undead with the Augmented Subtype and the Succubi's Subtype(s). The other one I find interesting...

1) Do you have a specific adventure or other piece of writing that you are most proud of? If so, what is it?

2) Do you ever catch errors in your work after it goes to print? Has there ever been a particularly embarrassing/irksome one?

Okay I can agree with these. I'm a sucker for video game music of all stripes though and the random encounters never particularly bugged me.

Thanks for the insight. Carry on =)

Mr. Jacobs,

While I love the mechanics for the pathfinder rpg, there are a few aspects of the lore I'm not too fond of(and many more I love), the main being the enforcing of the "always chaotic evil" label onto certain races (orcs, goblinoids, etc).

As a rule I don't like setting the distinction between good and evil on racial lines, I don't like labeling sentient creatures as monsters to make it "ok" for a party to slaughter them en masse, and somewhat selfishly, my favorite races happen to be orc, half-orc, and tiefling, which in most campaigns are often shoe-horned into villainous roles(worse, in regards to the first, cannon-fodder roles, and I hate cannon fodder in all it's forms). So while I use pathfinder mechanics for the most part, my world is largely homebrewed to allow for so called "monster" races to have as much capacity for good or evil as any humanoid race(which tends to have them floating around the darker side of neutral, truly good characters of any race are a rarity in my world).

Now, my question is what was paizo's primary motivation in enforcing the role of the traditional badguy races? Was there a lot of debate over the matter or was it fairly unanimous?

I liked FFXIII Better because the Story actually came quick. Unlike FFXII. And it didn't have a whiny hero. Though FFXII Vaan was't the Main Character he was simply the PoV Character...

Hi there James,

Do you get as excited about RPG Superstar as much of the wider Paizo community does?

What general aspects of the competition do you particular enjoy or not enjoy?

Has any aspect of this year's RPGSS experience been significantly different for you?

Cheers!
