Yes, that. :)

So does Heighten Spell change anything (as you still have slots)?

"You'd have to price this adjustment to the sword's power as appropriate, and the creature wielding the sword in battle would still have to be able to afford the sword as according to its treasure or NPC wealth expectations."

1. I'll be clearer: "In battle, [Sorshen] was said to wield a double-headed guisarme, marked with masculine and feminine ends and said to be capable of summoning two seductive guardians." (Pathfinder #1, p.77) How do I price that? (Assuming the answer to the next question doesn't answer this one.)

2. Would the pricing for constructs (CR^2 x 500 gp) work for a special purpose power that summons guardians for the duration of the battle?

For the record, the 7th-level-spell-at-will special purpose power costs 182,000 gp, while 1 CR 19 golem costs 180,500 and 2 CR 14 ones cost 198,000. I think this idea could work. :)

3. Since you mentioned pricing, how do you price artifacts?

4. Character Wealth by Level only goes up to 20. How would I determine it for higher levels (say, for a monster with PC-level equipment)?

"Please spell out what "SotM" refers to here, and perhaps remind me why or how this SotM might interact with 9th level spells..."

5. Since a spell in a staff of the magi can be cast repeatedly, what's to keep repeated use of a really good spell form being overwhelming?

James,

1. Does it feel weird to have "fans"?

2. Please don't take this the wrong way because I think what you do is awesome, but when you submitted your first adventure to Dragon all those years ago did you ever imagine that you would become some Nerd Rockstar Icon?

3. Do you object to the term "Nerdstar" as a description of a Nerd Rockstar?

Thanks in advance!

3)Casmaron is supposed to have a lot of psychic magic/psionics, correct? Is there any reason why they have it more then any other place?

4)When did the people of the Innersea first discover Arcadia? Who discovered it?

5)I know Kaiju can be found in Tian Xia but where did they come from? Sarusan maybe? The Darklands?

7)Xotani was stated up as a CR20 in 3.5, would he still be a CR20 now? Would it be safe to assume that each spawn of Rovagug would be a different CR ranging from CR20-25?

1) No.

2) That's a basilisk of the Storval Plateau (and as such isn't a green one like the one from the Bestiary, which is more one you'd see in forests/jungles).

3) The reason psychic magic is a big thing on Castrovel is that we decided they were a big thing on Castrovel. Lets us have an established place where psychic magic is big so we can use that location to support psychic magic content if we ever go there... but also keeps it out of the main campaign settings should we decide to never do anything with psychic magic.

5) They come from the Valashmai Jungle.

6) They are Holomgian, or Holomogi, or whatever adjective we come up for that ethnicity. It's a new ethnicity that doesn't have much representation in the Inner Sea Region—they're very much about southern Garund.

7) Xotani would remain CR 20 in Pathfinder rules. He's more or less the low end of the spawn, with the Tarassque being the high end.

Tattoos have rules here and there—tattoos can be purchased as gear in Ultimate Equipment, or used as magic as detailed in "Inner Sea Magic."

"Plastic Surgery" is mostly a form of fleshwarping or polymorph magic. Fleshwarping is covered in "Inner Sea Magic."

Frankly, I think that the limitations on make whole are ridiculous. I ignore the minimum caster level for repairing destroyed magic items in my games for the most part.

Does anyone in the office games ever play psionic classes?

Hi James

Since someone brought up the Dragon Empires...

Overall, how well was Jade Regent and the Dragon Empires stuff received, now that it has been almost a year or so since some of that stuff was first introduced. I know that some people rather loathed the idea of "Asian stuff" in Pathfinder.

I liked Dragon Empires and would be interested in revisiting it, so ultimately my question is was it well enough received that Paizo will be revisiting it, either in Campaign Setting, Player Companion, or Adventure Path form, at some point in the future.

A few questions on Tattooed Sorcerer/Mystic's Familiar Tattoo

1:Can an Improved Familiar be used as a Familiar Tattoo?
2:What if the master takes Eldritch Heritage: Arcane (or Imp EH: Serpentine)? Do the virtual Sorcerer levels stack with actual Sorcerer levels?

Taldor

The Battle Herald PrC doesn't seem to play well with itself.

*Inspiring Command is basically Inspire Courage with additional benefits.
*Inspire Courage gives a Morale bonus to fear saves and a Competence bonus to attack and damage rolls.
*Banner also gives a Morale bonus to fear saves.
*The following Inspiring Command options also give Competence bonuses to attack and/or damage: Inspired Tactics (for crit confirms), Pincer Maneuver (when flanking), Sound the Charge (when charging), and Teamwork (when aiding another's attack).
*Under most cases, you will have your banner out when you would use Inspire Courage.
*Any time you give an Inspiring Command, you are automatically also giving Inspire Courage.

So the Banner and Inspire Courage compete for Morale bonus to fear saves and some Inspiring Command options compete with Inspire Courage for attack and damage bonuses. Is this poorly worded? Are these an exception to the rule where Morale and Competence bonuses would stack? If not, this PrC might need some errata'ing.

I believe Casmaron's association with psionics is mostly limited to Vudra, because back in D&D, psionics were linked to Hindu mysticism (yogis, etc.).

Been thinking about Conan, so:

1) did you see the new Conan movie? If so, what'd you think?

2) would you consider Conan to be Mythic?

Hi James,

Just a couple of quick questions about the Champion of Irori:

Quote:

Ki Pool (Su)

At 2nd level, a champion of Irori gains a ki pool equal to 1/2 his class level + his Wisdom modifier; this functions like the monk ability of the same name, and levels in this class stack with levels in other classes that grant a ki pool. In addition to the normal uses of this ki pool, a champion of Irori may expend 2 ki points to trigger either his lay on hands ability (if he has it) or his smite evil ability. His class levels stack with paladin levels when determining the effect of such abilities.

1.)You mentioned that the CoI ki pool stacked with that of a monk in that they were added together in the following fashion: (Coi levels/2 + wis) + (Monk levels / 2 + wis). Was it meant for wisdom to be added twice to that number? (I ask because if it is indeed what the rules guys intended, then I've got to send in a bug report to the Herolab folk).

2.) With regards to lay on hands, the number of lay on hands/day is usually calculated as 1/2 paladin levels + cha modifier. I take it that levels in CoI don't count as paladin for the purpose of number of lay on hand uses per day? Just the amount that is healed (as per the description above : His class levels stack with paladin levels when determining the effects of such abilities.

Thanks for the answers!

So, I heard that several Paizo employees watch the New My Little Pony. were you aware that the third season started up this weekend? What are your thoughts about the upcoming week at work given this knowledge?

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Companion Subscriber

Undoubtedly you get asked this a lot, but how do you address complaints that rogues are very underpowered? Different people have different complaints about the class, of course, but for me it breaks down to the fact (as I see it) that rogues don't do anything better than others classes, each of which give benefits rogues don't. Rogues are intended to be highly customizable, but the issue is that no matter what role they're customized to, someone else is going to do it better. Alchemists, bards, inquisitors, and most especially ninjas just seem to eat the rogue's lunch.

Traps don't show up often enough in most Paizo products, especially the APs, to be a significant factor in selecting a character, but even if they did there would be a variety of classes that have trapfinding.

Sneak attacks become very hard to get off and survive the reprisals of -- unless you have the ninja's vanishing trick, when it becomes simple.

The bard clearly outdoes the rogue in the face and knowledge departments and has enough skill points to do the skill-monkey thing perfectly well.

Alchemists can handle locks and bring a suite of other abilities to the table that make them superior roving damage-dealers as well as filling utility slots the rogue can't handle.

Similar to bards, inquisitors can do so many things rogues can't hope to, and they can be excellent skill monkeys as well as filling the utility slots.

Ninjas are just...well, ninja > rogue, nuff said.

Heck, even an urban ranger can out-rogue a rogue.

Don't get me wrong, I love rogues. The stealth class is always my first choice in any game I play. But I can't for the life of me figure out why in the world I would want to play a rogue in Pathfinder. I can see dipping a few levels, sure, but unlike every other class, I can't see a single reason to play a rogue to 7, much less 20. If I were alone in this I'd think it's just me, but this seems to be the general consensus (though, of course, reasons why differ). What are we missing?

Dear Sir,

When a character multi-classes in,

Beatsmaster"

Sylvan Sorcerer Bloodline

How do their respective 'Effective Druid level -3' animal companion abilities work/combine/interact?

James, I would like your opinion regarding an ability in the ARG. Please forgive the spoilered wall of text. Paragraph 2 is the key paragraph to my question.

quote:

ARG p170-171 wrote:

Channel Evil (Su): At 1st level, a fiendish vessel, rather than channeling positive or negative energy, instead channels the pure evil power of her fiendish patron. This ability is similar to channeling negative energy, but instead of healing undead and dealing damage to living creatures, this blast of evil energy automatically heals evil creatures and debilitates good creatures within its burst.

Channeling this evil causes a burst that affects all creatures in a 30-foot radius centered on the fiendish vessel. In the case of evil creatures, the amount of damage healed is equal to 1d4 points of damage and increases by 1d4 at every two levels beyond 1st (to a maximum of 10d4 at 19th level). Good creatures in the burst receive a Will saving throw to negate this damage. Good creatures that fail their saving throws are sickened for 1d4 rounds. Good creatures with a number of Hit Dice less than or equal to the fiendish vessel’s class level – 5 that fail their saving throws are nauseated for 1 round and then sickened for 1d4 rounds instead. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the fiendish vessel’s level + the fiendish vessel’s Charisma bonus. Neutral creatures are unaffected by this burst of evil energy.

A fiendish vessel may channel this energy a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Charisma modifier. Doing so is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. A fiendish vessel can choose whether or not to include herself in this effect. A fiendish vessel must present her unholy symbol or use her familiar as the divine focus for this ability.

For the purposes of feats that affect channel energy, this ability counts as channeling negative energy. If the feat changes the way the fiendish vessel channels or deals damage with her channeling, use the amount of damage this ability heals evil creatures to determine the damage-dealing potential of the affected ability. For instance, if a 5th-level fiendish vessel takes the Channel Smite feat, her channeling deals an additional 3d4 points of damage to living creatures on a successful hit (though they may save to negate the damage).

This ability replaces channel energy.

So the question: Normal Channel energy either heals OR harms. It does not do both simultaneously. Am I reading this ability right in that it both Heals AND Harms simultaneously? I bolded the passage that is prompting me to think it does both simultaneously. (Note: I am hoping it either heals OR harms and does not do both simultaneously.)

How come the game's rules describe lycanthropy as a curse (listing it in the affliction/curse section of the glossary) and yet require remove DISEASE or heal to remove it? Doesn't (or shouldn't) the remove curse spell ALSO work against it just as well or better?

Addendum: And if remove curse can be used, does it require the same restrictions? (Must be a cleric, must be 12th-level or higher, must be cast within 3 days, must make a caster level check vs curse DC.)

That is indeed poorly worded. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that when that class was being developed and designed that a bit of archetype design/development stuff crept in there, since Inspire Command doesn't replace Inspire Courage. Might be worth posting that question and hitting the FAQ button.

Edit from Sean: See Sean's response here, the prestige class is fine and doesn't need clarifying errata.
