One of them was revealed earlier in the month: the Curse of the Crimson Throne hardcover that's coming out in September.
The other one that I'm significantly working on soon is not yet revealed, and I'm not sure WHEN it will be revealed...

In the Advanced Player's Guide there's a Gnome subtype called Lava Gnomes. I know that not everything from the hardcover line is Golarion specific, but most of the other subtypes seemed to have equivalents, or at least reasonable guesses on where to put them throughout the world.
Now I must make a Lava Gnome character that is utterly terrifying.

Suppose I want to design a mansion as a dungeon. What would be a logical room setup What would be a fun one?
I'd start by looking at real-world mansion maps, and augment them with mansion maps you've seen built for RPGs. We've done a LOT of them in Pathfinder before... the one in the 2nd Council of Thieves adventure comes to mind.
As for what would be a fun one? Haunted mansions are the best mansions! And now the one in "The Skinsaw Murders" has come to mind.

When I GM'd that adventure I set up a map on Roll20 with light sources and line of sight and I had my player's fearing every corner and unopened door, it was great.
How theatrical do you get when you GM? Music? Legerdemain? Props? Unique NPC voices?

If you're lazy, like me, you'll just buy this... :)

Depends on the game, really. For most Pathfinder games I'll absolutely use unique NPC voices and periodically special minis or maps or even some fancy handouts. For Call of Cthulhu I tend to go with a LOT more handouts. I generally don't use music but I've done so before.

Use Magic Device will let you trick an item into thinking you're a different class... but it does not grant the POWERS of that class. The way the ring of revelation is worded pretty much means you HAVE to be an Oracle (aka you have to meet minimum level requirements in class abilities granted by the oracle class, since the powers granted directly affect that ability rather than grant you NEW abilities). Furthermore, the ring specifically says that it has no effect if worn by a non-oracle.
SO. Best case scenario, you could Use Magic Device to trick the ring into activating, but if you don't actually have class levels in oracle, the ring will do nothing more than take up a ring slot for you.
What happens, for instance, if an oracle of the required level uses UMD on a ring that contains a revelation that he does not possess the mystery for? Would he be able to make use of the revelation within the ring, using UMD to "pretend" he has the right mystery in order to activate the ring?

That's up to the GM to adjudicate. I'd not allow it, since that's weird to me in the same way a magic item that would allow a cleric to "pretend" to worship a different deity would be weird to me. A magic item shouldn't be able to fake out your faith.
And honestly, given how weird the corner cases get with this ring, I'd probably just not let the ring into games I run in the first place.

So clearly the next AP involves Bill the Cat. I had been hoping, since Berke Breathed resurrected Bloom County last summer.

Question: Slayer combat style talents. I searched around and didn't see a definitive answer.
>The slayer selects a ranger combat style (such as archery or two-weapon combat) and gains a combat feat from the first feat list of that style. He can choose feats from his selected combat style, even if he does not have the normal prerequisites. At 6th level, he may select this talent again and add the 6th-level ranger combat feats from his chosen style to the list. At 10th level, he may select this talent again and add the 10th-level ranger combat feats from his chosen style to the list.
I've seen this come up and people arguing both ways. Does a slayer gain a bonus feat each time he takes this talent? Like a ranger? Or does the slayer instead gain a single feat at lvl 2, and then at 6 and 10 could take the talent and add feats to the list of ones he can use without prerequisites? But he would have to take these with is own feats. Either seems plausible. The latter is weaker of course but I kinda think Slayer does too much anyway, they nearly invalidate rogues and are better than rangers in most areas.

Dunno off the top of my head; rules questions should be asked in the rules forums, and if they're frequently asked enough should be tagged with the FAQ tag.
That said... if you DON'T get bonus feats from a combat style, then it's not really a class feature. It's just a suggestion. And that's kinda lame. Slayers in my games and in adventures I develop get them as bonus feats. Just like a ranger.

In your PF games, would you allow a bard to use the saving finale spell while the bardic effects from lingering performance are still active?
Nope. You have to actually end a performance to cast this spell. Of course, if you have lingering performance, your effects go on after you end the spell as normal, so it's still a nice combo.

One of my favorite things about the Vigilante is that it is not only possible, but feasible, to have an all-vigilante party. You can have a freaking superhero team in Pathfinder. Was one of the design goals was to be able to do this?
Not that I know of. The idea of a party where everyone shares the same class (or race, or religion, or whatever) is a cool idea and one I enjoy running with, though.

James, what did you think of the old GameMastery Compleat Encounters? Which one was your favorite? If you could create a new one, what would it be?
I never liked the spelling of the word "compleat" in the title at all...
I wrote a few of them though. I think the one I'm the most proud of was the Gorilla King one, since that one ended up being one of the ones we rolled into Golarion. Angazhan was the first demon lord I invented SPECIFICALLY for Golarion.
That said, the restrictions on how the encounters were built made for an unpleasant and somewhat unrewarding writing task. I much prefer having more room to present maps and adventures. I wouldn't create a new one today if I had the option.

Did you get the mimics or the skeletons to help you kill the fire demon?

Why is it easier for me to read horror (whether as graphic novel, regular novel or Pathfinder AP) than it is to watch horror films?
I suspect because films are more visual and visceral in the way they present their medium. Reading and tabletop RPGs require you to generate the visuals yourself in your mind, whereas movies do not.

Terror; those skeleton wheels were tough! Although this time around I didn't have much of a problem with them. They haven't killed me once yet, whereas in Dark Souls they devastated me.
Nah, killed the mimic on its own, and used a bow to snipe the fire demon to death. Neither mimic nor skeletons activated during the demon fight.
Old demon was cool. High Lord Wolnir was SUPER intimidating and awesome, and I'm still not sure how his fight works; I conjured in some helpers for that fight and they did the bulk of that work.
The watch dog is awesome.
Irythyll might be my favorite zone in Dark Souls III so far. It's gorgeous and a delight to explore.
I've found lots of pyromancy tomes, but I'm not sure of the one you're talking about.
Rysky |
High Lord Wolnir you just have to destroy those bracelets on his arms so his ass gets dragged into the Abyss before he crawls all the way to the top of incline and you can't get out of that damaging darkness.
A lot of people have been calling Irythyll "Christmas in Yharnam", which seems fitting :3
And I was referring to the one in Smouldering Lake next to the area with all the basilisks.

There is a recent trend on Tumblr (possibly elsewhere) of making Griffons for different varieties of birds and cats, such as a Heron and Cheetah griffon. What are you thoughts on this?
Depends entirely on the quality of the art, I guess. It's not something, regardless of the art, that I'd ever suspect I'd want to stat up in a way that's different than any old griffon.

Two questions, if you've got the time!
1) I've been reading as many of your posts as I could find in this thread, and I can't find the answer to this question so I'm sorry if you already answered this: are fey "born" the way that humanoids or animals or other creatures are born (created via reproduction from another creature of the same "kind") or do they spontaneously appear from natural places, like nature outsiders?
My question comes from the fact that fey souls aren't part of their bodies the way that an outsider soul is.
2) How does it feel to know that when you type "James Jacobs" in Google, not only does a picture of you pop up immediately, but you're listed as the #2 James Jacobs in the whole world?

I am no longer broke! Yay!
I can't decide which game to get! Boo!
So I ask for your help, O Mighty Dinosaur. Should I get Dragon Age: Inquisition (I have not played any of the previous Dragon Ages, although I plan to) or Dark Souls III?
If both isn't an option, Dark Souls III unless you've never played any of the souls games, in which case Dragon Age Inquisition.

1) Fey are generally born in the way that other creatures are, yes. They can also spontaneously generate on the First World, I suspect... but for the most part they're born normally. As for whether or not they have souls... since they can be raised from the dead and resurrected, they have souls. The flavor text that claimed otherwise didn't quite think through the implications all the way.
2) Creepy.
