I think it went very well, and I believe it is indeed intended to become a regular thing. Not an EVERY DAY thing though. I don't think. Hmmm. More of an Erik or a Wes question.
Well I'll go ask them a few question about it, but since I'm here, would you consider running a weekly game on twitch? Maybe bi-weekly?

Dunno. We may get to a point where we can stream office games all the time, but it's a pretty big production to do so (requiring a dedicated engineer person to run the thing), so maybe, but it's not something that I'd be able to do on my own and still run a game the way I like to. That'd be cool though, and it's certainly something we'd LIKE to do! Time will tell!

Not a question, but I wanted to say I got to watch most of the game you ran, and if that's representative of what we could expect from a regular game on OfficialPaizo, then I can't wait to see more! :)

Thanks for watching the game!

It was a pretty frantic paced game; normally I don't compress the story like that and prefer more roleplay and a bit more detail to the combat—I ran pretty much the whole thing without much reference checking and ad-libbed the entire thing based on games I've run before and my pretty extensive familiarity with Sandpoint and the hinterlands, so I feel like had I a more detailed set of notes it woulda been even better!

There aren't arranged marriages in Kyonin, and a lot of them end amicably after some time when both partners decide to move on. Polygamy is frowned upon for the most part. These answers might change if I check Elves of Golarion and see different words there.
How Is polygamy and polyamory viewed apron in the rest of golarion? Do different countries view it differently? If there are cultures who do practice it which ones are they? How does shalyn and her faithful feel about it?

Depends entirely on the region and the religion and the individual. Some practice it, and some do not.

Shelyn does approve of it, so long as everyone involved in the relationship is down with it; she's not a big fan of cheating on lovers.

Absolutely reasonable. If only because any class they take is gonna give them proficiency in more than just the one weapon or access to a skill.

James,

In all of the APs and Modules I've had the privilege and pleasure to browse through, I don't think I've ever seen an NPC statted up as an adept. The adept NPC class always seemed strange to me, whcih seemed to fill the niche of a rural, small community mystic or occultist. Now with the ability to choose from cleric, druid, oracle, shaman, and witch to represent that sort of character, I don't imagine I'll ever be seeing an adept in print either.

What are your opinions on the adept's place in the game? Is it an old NPC class that at this point needs to go? Or do you still see value in it?

Also, I'd love some insight on the situation with a shaman's spirits versus their worship of a deity. As a divine class, is it expected that a shaman does not pay homage to a deity? Would this anger the spirits they serve? Or could a shaman's respect or reverence of a deity be what grants them access to their spirits? What exactly are the 'spirits' as shaman know them?

As always, thanks so much for any answers you provide!

Part of that reason is that I'm personally not a big fan of the concept of the adept. Spellcasting, to me, is something that doesn't mesh well with the concept of a low-power class like the expert or commoner or warrior or aristocrat, and so when I develop and write adventures, I generally avoid using the adept at all. It's always better, in my opinion, to use an actual class. And especially now, with like 40 classes to choose from, most of the roles that you'd see an adept take are represented by actual classes, like oracle or shaman or whatever.

It's mostly in the game due to backwards compatibility at this point, as far as I can tell. It doesn't "need to go" at all, and there's not really a viable way to wipe it from the game anyway since it's already in the book, but I also don't see us making much use of it in print products.

That absolutely doesn't mean it isn't used in other games around the world though.

Shamans can ABSOLUTELY worship a single deity, and it's not uncommon for them to do so... but unlike clerics and warpriests, they don't have to focus their worship on a single deity. They can worship a group, or a philosophy, or whatever. What spirits are are what they are—bodiless manifestations of energy that lie somewhere between life and undeath—they are neither, but bear features of both. Think of them as ghosts of things that were never born, or of things that never were going to be alive anyway (like rivers or the wind), I guess?

If I give the appearance of being patient and calm on these boards, then I'm very very very delighted, because I don't always maintain that patience and calmness in real life. I do try, though!

As for how I do it? Combination of practice and taking a moment to step away from the boards when I feel that they're getting too obnoxious.

Back in the Dragon days, #319 to be specific, Paizo published a feat called Kung Fu Genius, which allowed a monk to use Int instead of Wis for class abilities. Apparently it wasn't universally hated, as it also received a reprint in the Dragon Compendium.

However, in the many years Pathfinder has been in publication we haven't seen anything similar for the PF system. Is this because of intellectual property concerns, or is it because the design team doesn't like the concept of a feat like that?

Would you allow à player to import Kung Fu Genius in a personal, private Pathfinder game you were running?

On a general level, how do you feel about feats that allow a different stat for a class ability/abilities?

How would you feel about an adventure path featuring Apostae? It'd probably be the closest thing to Undertale we can get in Pathfinder.

Speaking of which, what's your opinion of Undertale?

I have no opinion on Undertale; don't play it or know anything about it.

It's got nothing to do with IP concerns, and everything to do with the design team's design philosophy and the fact that maybe no one's thought of it yet. I'm not in their head, so you'd have to ask them if there's a specific reason why they haven't done something like that... and in fact, there MAY exist an option like that already as an archetype or whatever that neither of us know about.

Or, you know, just use the feat from Dragon. Game's compatible, after all, for a reason. ;-)

I'd allow a player to use the feat if they justified it with a cool, kick-ass character history.

I do like feats and abilities that alter what stat mods do like that, and they're a good way to help a complex build be simpler.

Hi James

One of my players has the "divine source" mythic power and plans on taking it 3 time to get 4 domains and 4 subdomains and eventually plans on taking the test of the star stone to become a full fledged goddess. Just for fun we were working on her eventual portfolio and domain and sub domain list. I saw that all of the gods have 5 domains, so she picked her eventual 5th which I assume she would gain upon ascension. So then we moved to sub domains. There were 9 that she wanted for her character, so I looked at rest of the gods and saw that most have 6, four of them have 7 ( caylen cailean, erastil, Shelyn, torag) two have 8 sub domains ( desna, serenrae) and iomedae is tho only one with 9. Is there a reason for this? Is it based on the number of worshiper they have? Or is it solely based on what fits them best. I'm curious because my group likes to play a contiguous world in golarion so adventure paths and characters we play have an impact on the world in future adventure paths. So in later games characters could choose this new goddess as a patron and I want it to be balanced.

I would also like to say thank you! For taking the time out of your busy day to answer all of our questions. It's an amazing service you provide and I personally really appreciate it, as I'm sure so do a lot of other people. So thank you so much for this and all the rest of the amazing work you do!

The number of subdomains deities get is somewhat sloppy, alas, as new subdomains were introduced without bothering to keep that in mind.

Demigods should have 4 domains and 4 sub-domains; upon finishing the Test of the Starstone, a newly ascended god is a demigod and that's what they should have. What you are by taking the Divine Source power alone is a quasi deity, not quite yet a demigod.

At some point after ascending to demigod from whatever source (such as the Test of the Starstone), you can ascend to a full deity; the rules by which this happen intentionally do not exist, and are left 100% up to you the GM to determine as appropriate for your game.

Once you're a deity, you get 5 domains and 6 subdomians. As mentioned above, there IS subdomain "creep" going on, and recently we've tried to limit that by saying that you need to take feats or archetypes to unlock access to these additional subdomains, but a freshly new deity would have 5 domains and 6 subdomains.

The number of worshipers a deity or demigod has is irrelevant; it has no bearing on that deity's power or the number of domains and subdomains they grant access to.

AND Thanks for the thanks! :D

Does one of those new subdomains have to be an outsider domain associated with alignment? A LG Demigod ascended to full god hood they would gain a new domain and two new sub domains one of which would be the archon domain? Looking at the other gods it seam they all have an outsider domain associated with there alignment.

Nope; one of those new subdomains doesn't have to be an outsider domain. Not all religions are associated with the available outsider domains, and expanding on the options for alignment based domains is one of the reasons things like Whimsy and the like were created.

That said, OFTEN a deity will have an outsider domain. That's the standard, but not a requirement, in other words.

So would a character who take Devine source then ascended to demigod hood still have same stats (character level 20 mythic rank 10 in this case)? Or would they gain a new stat block similar to a demon lord stat block? I assume they would lose their mortal race and become an outsider and gain all the outsider traits. Or do ascended demigods fall under the "stats intentionally don't exist" umbrella and are actually more powerful then a demon lord or empyrial lord but not as powerful as a full fledged god

Once you become a demigod, you are a unique creature. You could certainly use the exact same stats you'd get as a level 20 tier 10 character, but it's more interesting to me if you trade in those stats for customized outsider (or whatever) stats akin to what we've done with demon lords, empyreal lords, and the like.

We don't have rules to support PC demigods, of course, so how you handle something like this in your game is up to you!

Unrevealed, but that's very likely the case. We don't have rules for this, on purpose, so that every one can be different as needed for the story we want to tell eventually... stories that, in this case, we've not yet told.

Enough to give GMs what they need to run a game but not too much to hamper them from being impromptu.

Enough to inspire folks to create new stories but not so detailed as to scare away new folks or to "use up" plots.

Strange? How so. We often deliberately do weird foods to help make Golarion feel not-Earth, though.

We don't do many APs that go to level 20 because the pagecount we have available combined with the time we have to produce them on a monthly bases combined with the fact that we really want to do 2 a year to keep folks engaged means that we're pretty much at the limit of how many encounters and story we can fit into 6 volumes. Due to the way XP was designed (it didn't have an AP progression in mind, alas, when we built Pathfinder), that more or less limits us to APs that go from 1st to 16th-17th or so. AKA: The rules of time and space, combined with choices we made during the game's design, limit us to what we've been doing.

Probably not; she'd have a tough time of it if the truth of her race came out, but if she was a fair and just and charismatic and great leader she could make it work!

She dyes her hair.

I was in a planescape game and lost my character, and wanted to build a new character who had a kobold samurai cohort. I also wanted her to be a diplomatic spy sneaky charismatic type character. Thus, Lavinia Ameiko came to be. Ameiko Kaijitsu herself is about half the original character, and half new; Lavinia Ameiko was a blue-haired aasimar bard/rogue with a cohort, so her transition to Pathfinder wasn't 100% spot on. Shensen's was, pretty much.

I'm delighted and, yes, humbled by it!

How do you rule a confused character reacts when attacked by another?

A confused creature who can't carry out the indicated action does nothing but babble incoherently. Attackers are not at any special advantage when attacking a confused creature. Any confused creature who is attacked automatically attacks its attackers on its next turn, as long as it is still confused when its turn comes. Note that a confused creature will not make attacks of opportunity against anything that it is not already devoted to attacking (either because of its most recent action or because it has just been attacked).

Is it the following round only or every round thereafter until the attacker is unconscious/dead/out of the fight/confused character no longer confused?

I've read it's plays mostly the later but I think the wording would suggest the former.

Once someone's attacked when they're confused, they keep attacking that attacker until they're no longer around, at which point they roll again on the table.

That said, going with either interpretation is perfectly fine, since the end result is still confusion!

Hello Mr. Jacobs,

You mentioned a Planescape game you played in. How do you think a meeting between the Lady of Pain and the Aeons would shake out? Diplomatic, or hostile?

When you played in Planescape, did you follow the weird rules regarding magic items? Refresher: the further removed from the home plane a magic item was crafted on, the weaker it became. We followed those rules, and I enjoy it as a GM, but I don't think the players like it as much. During the design for Golarion's cosmology was a similar affect on magic items considered? What's your opinion from a creative/design viewpoint?

With the Academy Awards coming up again so soon, I was thinking about past winners and possible future winners of Best Picture. I've mostly given up on paying attention to the Oscars (simply due to how different my personal tastes are to the voting community in Hollywood, and not for any other reason) but with Fury Road being nominated this year, they've managed to briefly get my hopes up.

A few things that came to mind while thinking about it:
An adventure movie didn't win until 1956 (Around the World in 80 Days), and none have since;
A horror movie didn't win until 1991 (Silence of the Lambs), and none have since;
A fantasy movie didn't win until 2003 (Return of the King), and none have since;
A science fiction movie still hasn't won.

With that in mind, what do you think the odds are of any flavor of Lovecraftian film receiving the top honor in our lifetimes?

Bonus Question: There are many Small playable races currently available in Pathfinder, but only 1 Large that I'm aware of (Trox, which are only in a Bestiary but count as 0HD). Apart from logistical reasons relating to doorways, is there a reason for that?

My understanding of the Lady of Pain is that she generally DOESN'T have to clash with others, because they all respect her. The aeons would as well, so no different than any other outsider race in that case.

We didn't use those rules; never liked them. There was never any intention to weaken magic the further one traveled from the material plane... makes no sense that magic is less powerful in realms that are more magical.

A few things that came to mind while thinking about it:
An adventure movie didn't win until 1956 (Around the World in 80 Days), and none have since;
A horror movie didn't win until 1991 (Silence of the Lambs), and none have since;
A fantasy movie didn't win until 2003 (Return of the King), and none have since;
A science fiction movie still hasn't won.

I've pretty much come to the opinion that the Academy Awards are incredibly irrelevant to today's tastes in movies. If Mad Max wins, I'll change my tune, but I doubt it'll win. The fact that Chalrize Theron didn't get a nomination for Best Actress is a crime too. And the fact that they're so painfully snobby on ignoring genre films, as you point out, is very frustrating.

But yeah... I've more or less lost interest in the Academy Awards over the past 10 years.

I doubt a Lovecraftian film will get close to the Awards ever, simply because the best Lovecraftian films are indie films that don't have lots of studio tinkering, and since the Awards never go to genre films. Not gonna happen.

Large races break too many expectations, from the standards for reach in battles to the fact that they don't fit in many dungeons. They're just not good choices for PC races, and the trox are an exception to that rule and should not be PCs.

I wouldn't. I'm too afraid of prions.

Dear James Jacobs; have you or some of your team mates at paizo develop a new Horror AP like Carrion Crown with more horror things once the fear book arrives?

To He Of The Many Teethed Maw!

If I made a Facebook page for my gaming group, with all present and some past members, and called it Matt's Mississippi Pathfinders, for the purposes of recruiting new peeps, would you and the Powerful Paizonians sue me out of house and home?

I fully intend to include links to the Paizo website and the PFSRD site on my page.

Bear in mind, my current assets consist of my 2001 Ford Ranger (silver), that I haven't finished paying for, my vast collection of paperback and hardback fantasy novels, a handful of 2nd Ed D&D gaming books, a dwindling collection of 3.x D&D gaming books, and my truckload of Pathfinder books.

So, not really a net gain if you think about it.

James do you watch the twitch show Critical Role? If so, who's your favourite PC?

James, has Paizo pretty much given up on Prestige Classes? Because I notice that there hasn't been a new one published in nearly two years -- the last was in April 2014. And apparently, some people have been saying that many archetypes + many new base classes = PrCs are not needed any more (and/or they were a holdover from 3.5 anyway, and/or they don't fit with the way Paizo likes to design its classes, etc. etc.)

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I will note that there's clearly still a lot of love on the boards and in PBP for at least some PrCs -- people do seem to dig their Hellknights, Aldori Swordlords, and Diabolists.

cheers,

Doug M.

Unlike other themed books we've done like Mythic or Occult, Horror is not something "new" to our products, nor is it a topic that requires a new ruleset. As such, we've been including horror in our adventures as elements from the very start; there's a LOT of horror in Rise of the Runelords, for example, particularly parts 2 and 3.

This has never changed, nor will it.

For example, later this year we'll be launching the Strange Aeons Adventure Path, which is a full-on Lovecraftian AP and is horror themed from all the way through.

Short answer to your question: Yes... but we always have been.

As long as you comply with the guidelines in the community use policy, which was created specifically for situations like this, you'll be fine.
