1) So will paizo use unchained versions of rogue/monk/barbarian/summoner when the book is released, or is the book intended only for home games?

2) I don't know if someone has asked this already, but is cannibalism considered inherently evil in Golarion setting? I mean on meta level, not on cultural level.

3) I'm bit confused when I try to imagine how CN worshipper of Lamashtu would act. I mean, since she is all about breeding new horrible creatures to kill and slaughter and stuff

4) Same way, how can CN worshipper of Rovagug not be evil since hes all about killing everyone?

5) Is Lissala still alive? Aka can clerics still get spells from her?

6) When the same god is worshipped on multiple continents, do their forms of worship differ much depending on region?

7) Does cultists of Mhar and Xhamen-Dor exist on Golarion? I mean, is anyone on Golarion even aware of their existence?

8) Does Nyarlathotepth have avatars unique to Golarion?

Iron Gods spoiler...

Spoiler:
In the end, the PCs have the option to elevate Casandalee as a minor goddess in her own right, and have the option of determining her domains and alignment by inserting new modules into her. From an ethical standpoint, is this really a good idea? Casandalee may be an AI, but by this point the PCs probably consider her a friend too, and she has her own will (which is why she broke from Unity in the first place). Why would she let other people decide the kind of person she should be? Why doesn't SHE decide what kind of deity she wants to become?

Also what would be elements of her portfolio, as opposed to domains, given that a deity's portfolio can be a lot more specific and detailed as to just what their interests and beliefs are?

Answer!

Spoiler:
Whether or not it's a good idea, or an ethical idea, is up to the players to decide. It's not an EASY question to answer, which is why I was so eager to set it up as a significant part of the AP's climax. I HOPE it's as thought provoking to people as it is to me, and I'm not gonna say much more about it... although the way free will and faith plays out is at the core one of the themes of Iron Gods... and one of the ways that plays out is exactly what you've hit on.

As for the elements of her areas of concern (we don't use "portfolio" in Pathfinder)... that part actually IS up to her to decide... or is it, since it's influenced by her programmed alignment and domains?

1) Not favorably.

2) I don't believe we've ever nailed that list down in print. It's certainly legal in Cheliax and Katapesh. It's certainly illegal in Absalom. I don't recall off the top of my head if it's legal or not in Taldor—I suspect it is, but with moderation.

Wait, I'm confused. Doesn't Absalom have one of the larger slave markets in the Inner Sea? And laws that you can't assault the slavers with magic to free all the slaves or something?

Or am I remembering a different city?

Oh... oops. I meant to say "It's certainly illegal in Andoran." It's legal in Absalom.

I'm TRYING to make sure we get a lot of these illustrated too, but that's tricky since there's a lot of races and not an infinite amount of room in the book. BUT yes... if a GM is saying you have to play a light-skinned ANYthing... that's inappropriate, and should be brought to Mike Brock's attention.

I suspect that the primary religion for the Ekujae is something akin to druidism. Gozreh worship is pretty common too there though, along with worship of Ketephys.

Whether or not the Ekujae cross over with other cultures there varies by tribe. An Ekujae student of Magaambya is a cool idea.

I love all of these words. :)

Will there be ethnicity groups for half-orcs as well, or would that be mostly overlapped information from human ethnicities?

Mikaze: have you read Bastards of Golarion? I know it's not exactly what you asked about, but it might interest you nonetheless.

Extra questions for Mr. Jacobs to make up for that!

Mr. Jacobs: I seem to recall some conflicting reports on this, so:

Do half-drow exist in (your) Golarion?

Do aquatic elves (and half-elves) exist in (your) Golarion?

The (your) refers to your vision for the setting, rather than the one that's necessarily canon. If those things conflict, I'd rather have your personal version. Like the existence of summoners, for example. :)

Are you aware of the Iron Kingdoms setting? (Privateer Press, Warmachine/Hordes wargame setting.) Do you like it at all? Is there anything you would take from it for your campaigns? (Personally, I really like the Satyxis race.)

Regarding your post about specialty priests: if you had the space to print it, would you make a priest class based on that, with spheres and such? Why or why not?

About the trox (the Large race from the Race Builder samples): when they were reprinted in Bestiary 4, text was added about the trox being a slave race of the duergar. I'm planning to use the duergar in a side campaign to Wrath of the Righteous, so I was wondering: is this part of (your) Golarion?

Thank you! :)

What is the difference between saying "areas of concern" and "portfolio" when talking about gods?

Inner Sea Races isn't really the book to introduce new ethnicities and new races, just like Inner Sea Gods wasn't the book to introduce new deities. There might be a FEW new ones here and there, but I doubt we'll say a lot about them. We'll see.

Wait, summoners don't exist in your version of Golarion?

I guess that explains why summoner encounters seem to be so rare <_<; Pity since I think some of summoner archetypes would work great for boss encounters

Also to Kalindra: I think I asked about existence of Trox(and Wyvarans and Wyrmwood) long time ago and he said something like "If they exist, they are probably aliens so not on Golarion" meaning wise, but I'm not sure if things have changed since

Anyway, another question popped up in my mind:

So if metallic dragon would decide for some reason to take over kobold tribe(I think they don't really care about kobolds so thats really unlikely), would kobolds regard them being in rule same way they regard chromatic dragons?

2. Are there circumstances under which a paladin would agree with slavery? Like, the slaves are well provided for and treated kindly, but are still considered owned property?

3. Given that you don't even have enough time to read Paizo's stuff, do you ever make time to read 3PP publications?

4. Have you ever looked into buying Scuttlecove from WoTC?

5. If a CRPG for Pathfinder were to be developed with its own original story, would you prefer it be built like a Roguelike, a first-person adventure, or party-quester (ala NWN)?

6. Are Paladins of Lymneris and/or Arshea a thing? If so, do they have less discretion with prostitutional (sic) clientele given they have Divine Health?

1) Pretty much the same. They still support some heretics, not all, but some... and they have their reasons.

2) No. Not if they want to stay a paladin. Paladins are lawful good. Not just lawful.

3) Pretty much never. There's a FEW exceptions, but in my free time, I much prefer to read non d20 games if I'm gonna spend time reading game materials these days... unless I'm reading up on my free time for a Pathfinder game of course!

4) No.

5) All three. As in 3 games.

6) Yes, but they're VERY rare, and being immune to STDs doesn't mean a paladin is less discrete with his/her sex life. There's more to it than that.

He probably should have access to some sort of Wealth / Greed / Trade domain, if such a thing were to be created for Pathfinder (preferably not just poached from the Wealth / Greed / Trade domains in 3.5).
Abadar and Erastil have a not-always-friendly sort of conflict going. One of those areas where they conflict is that Erastil is very much an advocate for the citizens of a community, and thus he has the Community domain. Abadar, on the other hand, is much more "corporate." He doesn't really care as much about the individual, and thus does NOT have the community domain, on purpose. Admittedly a pretty subtle move on my part, but that's the basic reasoning there. And since we have no Wealth/Greed/Trade domain in the game, he offers Nobility instead. (Subdomains, from the APG, will help as well.)

Hey, James, I ran across this question you answered almost five years ago, but it ties into something I'm wondering about in relation to Giantslayer.

Trunau has a prominent Banker, but the vibe I get off the town is much more Erastil than Abadar: more defending-one's-home-and-hearth than civilization-must-prevail. Am I misreading the atmosphere of the community?

No... but the person who originally wrote up Trunau might be.

Note that in pretty much all cases, my version and the print version of Golarion are the same.

I'm aware of Iron Kingdoms, but I've never looked much into it other than to admire the artwork. Strike that. I've used monsters from the Monsternomicon in my home games... but that was like a decade ago that I did so...

If space was not an option, there would be a unique cleric class for every single deity. Some would have multiple unique cleric classes.

The trox are not part of Golarion. They're from another planet but I'm not ready to reveal which one.

When you say "portfolio" you're using D&D language for the same thing, and this is Pathifnder, not D&D.

It's not a copyright issue or an intellectual property issue.

It's an issue, pretty much, that the word "portfolio" is in my opinion the wrong word. It implies a much to mundane and workaday implication to something that shouldn't be mundane or workaday. The gods aren't starving artists who need to keep a docket of their work for their next job.

It's a matter of word choice preference.

My "version" of Golarion is the one you see in print. That version has summoners... but they are VERY rare. Mostly limited to the god-callers of Sarkoris, but there are a few other single cases here and there that sometimes pop up in adventures and the like.

And archetypes are better suited for player characters, not GMs, really.

Kobolds would probably regard metallic dragons the same way... at first. They'd probably get sick of them and try to engineer a way to get them killed by a proper dragon ASAP.

I'm bit confused by differences of alternate classes and archetypes. If I wanted to create my own class for homebrew game, what would be the line where I know which it is?

I would think that's very similar to certain faiths such as Sarenite priests handing out a geas or a paladin using a mark of justice to enforce a certain behavior, which the mark for paladins is actually permanent. Does the fact those tools don't physically restrict someone's movements and daily life but simply focuses on their behavior play a factor into making those examples OK even if my other question above wouldn't be acceptable?

Not to mention the fact that the Pathfinder Society itself makes heavy use of mutilated slaves to mass produce it's Chronicles. I didn't actually work on Unchained, and have only glanced through it... but I'm 99% sure that archetypes aren't involved in the book. The point of Unchained is to get crazy and try all sorts of new things, not to muddy the waters with variant archetypes.

The line between an alternate class and an archetype is blurry, but I'd say that if your archetype takes up more than 600 to 900 words then it's too complicated to be an archetype and should probably be an alternate class instead.

Yes... dwarves and the like do exist on certain other planets.

As for nihilism... because it's my opinion that nihilism is a bad thing and the best way to get that point across is to make it into a "everyone must die" kinda thing. Note that not ALL nihilists feel that way, and not everyone who has an "everyone must die" is a nihilist.

Turns out, being a paladin is about being good as it is lawful. Slavery is not good.

Being a paladin is also about making hard choices and being tempted to take the easy path. A paladin who never has to make hard choices that might compromise her beliefs when they clash against her training is lazy. In another way, it's those conflicts and clashes that make being a paladin possible. Those conflicts are the grit in the oyster shell that lets the pearl of a paladin form.

Putting a mark of justice or a geas on someone is not slavery; they aren't FORCED to obey, but if they don't they get punished. Free will still exists. Note also that I doubt very much that most paladins would be fond of geas or mark of justice type stuff anyway, since that starts edging toward torture.

1) Isn't nihilism just philosophical belief that nothing has objective intrinsic value? .-. Like, gold isn't valuable because its inherently valuable, life doesn't have objective metaphysical meaning for why it would exist, rules of ethics wouldn't if people didn't exist, etc type of metaphysical stuff.

I mean, I don't really see why belief that humans are the ones who decide value of things would be offensive to someone or correlate with "life is pointless, so I want to destroy everything" maniacs?

2) So anyway, so if trox are aliens, duergar part of bestiary is probably untrue(unless its alien duergars). Are setting neutral bestiary texts in general meant to be compatible with Golarion or is it case by case?

1) "Nihilism" isn't a defined game term. It can mean plenty of different things, and appending it to one interpretation does not invalidate the others. We didn't give things like daemons the attitudes they have in order to define nihilism. We defined them the way we did to give them a unique set of shared traits and themes. That the word nihilism got associated with it is not the same as saying nihilists all want to destroy everything. AKA: I think your'e reading too much into that.

2) That's both a great example of how not everything that goes into a Bestiary, which is world-neutral, is always correct for Golarion AND a great example of how important it is for us to TRY HARD to make sure that what we DO put into a Bestiary doesn't directly contradict or suggest inaccuracies FOR Golarion. I try to make sure that doesn't happen, but for Bestiary 4 I was less involved than normal and some of the monster entries got developed by other people who didn't keep this in mind, unfortunately.

I try to make sure that doesn't happen, but for Bestiary 4 I was less involved than normal and some of the monster entries got developed by other people who didn't keep this in mind, unfortunately.

1) Ah, sorry ^_^; I do reading on philosophies as hobby and I have bit of berserk button reaction when it comes to what I consider to be misunderstanding different philosophical beliefs and systems. And nihilism is the one that is commonly misunderstood as "life is pointless, so why don't we just kill ourselves?". Aka, I was probably projecting my frustration there without realizing it ^^; Sorry again

I'll just blame Hollywood for twisting general view on a belief by quoting Nietzsche... Who ironically hated nihilists <_< Hes actually a rather cynical fatalist.

2) Ah. That does also explain why bestiary 4 seems to get quite detailed about the non specific setting sometimes.

Thanks for the replies as always :) Its awesome you take time to reply to us, especially since we don't always behave smart

The RaW for the White-Haired Witch archetype definitely raise more questions than they answer:

--Does the hair attack receive the Intelligence bonus to hit as well as damage? This only seems to make sense. Also, the wording "plus the witch’s Intelligence modifier" seems rather open-ended...is this in addition to a Strength modifier to damage? If so, since it is the only primary natural attack, would that be 1 1/2 times Str mod to damage?

--Since it is a Free action to grapple an opponent on a hit with the hair, can the Witch then use a Full Attack action to attack the grappled opponent with a weapon in that same (first) round? (Obviously she could not do so in subsequent rounds, because at that point maintaining the grapple would require a Standard action.) If she can do this, is the weapon considered a secondary attack? Or would the hair attack have to be secondary, even if it came first in the round? In that case, if the hair is considered secondary, does that also apply a -5 to the grapple check?

--Is there anything stopping the Witch from attacking a foe with a weapon, then attacking with the hair as secondary that same round and grappling the foe (as a free action due to the grab ability)...holding the foe in the grapple til just before her action the following round, then releasing them to repeat the process?

--Since the Witch is not considered to have the grappled condition when grappling a foe with her hair, if her hair had reach, would she still receive attacks of opportunity with her hair against other foes provoking with movement? If so, could she grapple them as well? Or is the hair considered to be completely occupied when grappling one foe?

These all would be great questions to ask on that book's thread so that they can be FAQed.

Here's how I'd answer them in my game:

1) I would let the witch modify her hair's attack and damage with Int. Str wouldn't enter the picture.

2) She has to hit a foe with her hair, but when she does, she gets to try to grapple them as part of that attack. It should work like the grab universal monster ability.

3) As with ALL primary attacks, if you attack with a weapon and the limb you use to make that attack isn't the one you use to make the primary attack, yes, can then opt to make that normally primary attack as an additional secondary attack. Creatures with the grab ability generally are better advised to not spend the time maintaining a grapple but just take advantage of the grab ability each round (unless, of course, they want to do something like pin a foe).

4) Once her hair is grappling a foe, she can't use it to also attack another. She only has one hair attack.

Do you have any opinions of the Souls games (Demons' Souls and Dark Souls 1 and 2)?

I do.

They are among the best video games ever made. All three are in my top 20 video game list. Dark Souls is in the top 10. Maybe even the top 5.

Oh gods, now I must play them!

Will I be able to finish my video game backlog before I die?

Fair warning:

These games are likely going to be the hardest games you've ever played. That's what makes them so great, though.

Mr JJ - can you shed some light on Cayden Cailean and Tian Xia?

I know the main Inner Sea God spoken of in TX is Irori, but CC's wiki page says his worship is found all over Golarion. (Sorry I don't have legit copies of some of the books and need to go wiki to grab some of my fluff...) Is he well known there? Respected? Specifically I'm talking Hwanggot.

Heck, while you are at it, I'd love to know more about Hwanggot than "they're good, peaceful, and diplomatic"

I'm sorry if this is more the "go buy the XXXX book" material.

Also...where does CC's church get off considering getting drunk to excess an abuse of a divine gift, when their deity got so wasted that he drunkenly attempted the most dangerous challenge in existence? Seems a bit hypocritical to me.

I know mythic spells cannot be crafted into wands but can they be stored in a spell storing weapon/armor?

So I take it you (and probably Wes too) are excited for Bloodborne?

Do you have aby unterrst in getting the Scholars of The First Sin edition of Dark Souls 2?

It is indeed more go buy the book material, alas... especially since I'm at home now and don't have a copy of Dragon Empires handy to copy/paste text out of anyway.

And really? The fact that a deity got drunk and passed the test anyway isn't something worth worshiping?

No.

Not unless it's a new sort of "Mythic spell storing" effect that you/your GM invented.

I'm VERY excited for Bloodborne. I don't think Wes is as much. He never really played the Dark Souls games. He's too much of a wimp for that kind of abuse. ;)

I'm intrigued by getting First Sin for the Xbox One... but I've already played the hell out of that game and I have a lot of other games to play that I've NOT yet played... we'll see.

Aww poor Wes.

I can't remember if you said you got the addons for DS 2 but First Sin comes with all 3 plus some extra stuff if that helps any :3

Ah, also on the topic of the White-haired Witch, the question arose (and this is a biggie)....

If the Witch hair-grapples a foe at reach (10', 15' or further away), does the foe remain in the square they were grappled at that distance, or are they automatically pulled to a square adjacent to the Witch, as per usual grapple rules?

Since the RaW explicitly state the Witch is NOT considered grappled, and since there is a special "Pull" hair attack available at 6th level WHW, it seemed to me that said grappled victim would simply be stuck in the square in which he was grappled (unless he won a grapple check and used the option to "move yourself and your target up to half speed", thus allowing him to move closer).

Guess who has their copy handy!

Unfortunately for greentea, there's no mention of the Drunken God in either of the Dragon Empires books. I'm guessing that Sun Wukong has that slice of worship pretty well locked up.

(Advance clarification: many of the questions in this post regard future stories, ideas, etc. I know you can't comment on unannounced product schedules. What I'm asking is if you have ideas that you want to eventually use, even if they might not occur for years or at all.)

Mr. Jacobs: I know that Jade Regent was your baby. I personally really like it, but I want to run Rise of the Runelords first to clear up Ameiko's continuity. A couple of my players are upset at Jade Regent, though; not because of any of its flaws, but because they wanted a pure Tian Xia AP rather than a Journey to the East.

Are there any future Adventure Paths you'd like to set in the Dragon Empires? Or was the story of Ameiko's return home the only story you were really passionate for?

Will Inner Sea Races have anything relevant to Tian Xia? The title kind of implies that any information will be more for expatriate Tians like the Kaijitsu. But maybe I'm just reading too much into the name. :)

Do you have any stories you want to set in Ninshabur? Or is it just a place for history to have happened, with little more to add?

You've said that you want to be careful about introducing more 0-HD races, for various good reasons. (I like the Race Builder races as aliens, for the record. Nice dodge.) Do you have any in mind that you still want to produce? For example, it looked like you had androids in your back pocket for quite a while. :)

Do you have anything specific in mind for catfolk, or are you waiting until necessary to develop them further in your mind? Will we hear more if and when southern Garund receives a closer look?

Your thoughts on summoners are well documented. Are there any other classes you have similar issues with? It seems like most other pre-ACG classes have been fairly well integrated.

Thank you! :)
