Hey folks, OwlCon on the Rice University campus in Houston, Texas is right around the corner.
Okay, fine.
It's January 28th-30th, but GMs have already started planning. Since the first year PFS was at OwlCon, the interest and excitement has grown and this year is certainly no exception. I think we will double the number of tables from last year.
So come on down to Houston and pitch some dice and tell some tales. We even had some crazy Cajuns drive in from New Orleans in previous years, so don't pretend that Houston is too far for a fun weekend of gaming. (I'm looking at you, Metroplex Paizonians.)

Hey, Adam!
I have a friend who is currently attending Rice University as a doctoral candidate. I'd like to refer him to you, if I may.
He's expressed some interest in running a game at OwlCon, but he's been away from GMing for awhile, so I'd like to get him into a good PFS group as a player for a bit.
Would you mind if I sent him your way? I'll send you a note on FB to work out the contact details, if that's alright.

Adam, this year I have some help in organizing for OwlCon. Wolfthulhu has set up the Google site and is working on setting up the Year of the Shadow Lodge interactive. I guess you could say I may be the Chief Worrier and Pest. While we have GM's for every slot we can always use overflow GM's in case we need them or if someone cannot show up. As of now I am more concerned that we have enough players to fill what tables we have scheduled.

I've been to the site and looked around, but could not find a listing of the events that will be offered at Owlcon....
Where can I find the list of PFS events that will be offered?
The site made it look like I needed to buy a con badge and then I'd be given access to some other site which would let me see the events....
Can't I look at the event list and use it to gauge if I really want to go to the con BEFORE I buy my ticket?
Or am I looking in the wrong place?
Thanks,
MSG

The event list isn't finalized yet. When it is you will be able to see it at the site linked, prior to buying your Con badge.
If you click on the 'Tabletop RPGs' there are two events (Non-PFS) listed. When we get our schedule finalized, we will be there as well.

Thanks.
I noticed the two events listed and assumed they were simply placeholders for that area of the site.
Any idea on when I should expect the PFS events list to be semi-complete? I have a couple of friends who might fly in from NOVA to attend with me, and they have to watch for airfare....
Thanks again for the info,
MSG

How about this... What are you looking for?
Many of the GMs have not decided yet. For myself I am trying to decide if I want to chance waiting for the Jan scenarios to come out before the Con. I want to run a Low level one but there are not going to be any new low levels until Jan.
They are trying to fit in the Shadow Lodge event.

Thankfully at present, Wolfthulhu has acquired the Year of the Shadow Lodge interactive and we have set aside 3 tables. As has been posted above me there are a couple of people that have an idea of what they want to run. But few of us have made any definite plans yet. Personally I am trying to wait until most everyone else picks what they would like to run and I'll fill in where needed. We have four tables assigned for each of the 6 time slots. So you should have a good selection.
Goatlord |
Well....
Unlike most Owlcon attendees (but like most of the posters here) I have already done the PFS Special at Gencon. There's no lure there for me, but I'm glad to see it being played outside of Gencon, and I hope it pulls a lot of people to come to Owlcon.
What I'm intersted in is scenarios/levels and time slots... I see in a post above that there are 6 time slots... when exactly are they?
I have a level 7 (and my buddies are 7/8) and I know that the selection of higher level scenarios is a bit thinner than lower level ones, though 7 isn't so bad as many are 1-7.
I also have a lower level character, but I prefer to play the 7.
So, ideally for me, I'd be able to schedule a relatively full plate of PFS for the entirety of the con (excepting Sunday night, as I need to drive back to Austin and get to work on Monday). The PFS scenarios (again in my preference) would allow me to play my higher level character most of the time, and when they didn't, I could fit in a lower level scenario for my other character that I haven't played before.
I've played: #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #8, #9, #10, #14, #17, #23, #24, #29, #30, #33, #39, #43, #47, #51, #52, #2-01, and #2-03. (and the 2009 and 2010 Gencon PFS specials)
I know the con's not designed especially for me. But you did ask what I was looking for.
Adam: #50 looks great for me! (heard it was a killer though) If my buddies from NOVA come down we could definitely put together a high level table for this. Wonder why you chose to run that one? ;)
Thanks again,
MSG

@Goatlord, Let me cover what our plan is for OwlCon. The time slots are each 4 hours long. They are:
Friday, January 28,2011, 8 pm - 12 am;
Saturday, January 29, 2011, 10 am - 2 pm; 3 pm - 7 pm; 8 pm - 12 am;
Sunday, January 30, 2011, 10 am - 2 pm; 3 pm - 7 pm.
Our plan at present is to offer 2 low level scenarios, 1 mid level, and 1 high level in each time slot.
I hope this helps.
Goatlord |
@Silverhair
That helps a ton. More than you think, probably.
I won't be making that last slot, but I can probably swing the other 5.
Is it safe to assume that these 2 low, 1 mid and 1 high scenarios would repeat?
If I make that assumption, we are looking at the possibility of 12 distinct scenarios [6 low, 3 mid, 3 high] (if each is offered twice) or 8 different scenarios [4 low, 2 mid, 2 high] (if each is repeated 3 times).
I'm sure I can find PFS goodness in that for my characters.
Any idea what the location is like? All PFS games being played on tables in the same room at the same time (a la Gencon)?
Thanks for all of the information.
MSG
PS: I assume the GMs are familiar w/ the 4 hour limit... that can get close on some games. OTOH, I thought that making the slots 5 hours at Gencon was a mistake... it made scheduling nightmares if you wanted to do things other than PFS and VERY few of the games actually went anywhere near 5 hours.
silverhair2008 |
@Goatlord, the assumption that the scenarios would repeat is what is being determined as we speak. So far only Adam Daigle has made that clear. As for location we are in another building with each table in separate rooms. Three of the rooms are supposed to be close together with the fourth a little distance down the hall. I cannot be more specific than that as I have not been in that particular building before.
Dragnmoon |
I was already assuming I would be running the Same Low level scenario in all my slots. I have just not decided which one.
I don't like the only low level available for Season 2, and I am afraid if I run a Season 0 or 1 that I will run into too many players who already played them.
Harkaelian |
I can pretty much say with confidence that Rob and I will make the whole weekend. For my part I know I will anyway. Rob almost always has half a dozen mods with him he has DMed already for emergency use and I will bring a few with me as well I am familiar with. We should be able to provide some flexability on rounds available. Like I said though Silverhair, although I can't commit to DMing specific rounds or numbers of rounds I would commit to the interactive to provide others the chance to play the special and not be stuck DMing something they have never experienced playing.

Emails hammering out the schedule have been making the rounds among GMs for this event, so I thought I'd bump this thread and see what players might be attending? Want to play some Pathfinder Society with some of the best GMs Houston (and other parts of Texas) have to offer? Come on down and throw some dice with us. Pre-registration should be opening soonish!

@Ace, Send me an email at silverhair2012(at)gmail(dot)com, and I'll try to help you get set up.
@Gotrek22, we are in the process of finalizing who will run what. We have some people that have already selected their scenarios. Send me an email at above addy and I'll let you know where to go to signup and what you can expect.

For anyone interested, here is the scenario list for OwlCon so far:
PFS 2-11 The Penumbra Accords
PFS 45 Delerium's Tangle
Year of the Shadow Lodge Interactive
PFS 51 & 52 The City of Strangers (projected)
The plan so far is to have 4 tables in each time slot which amounts to 24 tables. We are trying to arrange to have 2 low level, 1 mid level, and 1 high level table in each time slot. I will post updates periodically.

Here is what I intend to run in my time slots:
Friday, January 29,2011, 8 pm
PFS 55 The Infernal Vault - Pathfinder Society Scenario 55: The Infernal Vault is a Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for 1st to 7th level characters (Tiers: 1–2, 3–4, and 6–7).
The PCs are asked by Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng to immediately make their way to the rediscovered Deckland Vault to find both it and Celeena Deckland, whom the Society believes murdered a Pathfinder in Cheliax. The Society guesses (correctly) that she seeks to find her family’s old documents regarding the defenses of Absalom and sell them to highest bidder. Though the documents may seem outdated, they still contain information on various hidden passages under the city and through its walls.
Saturday, January 30, 2011, 10 am
PFS 56 The Jester’s Fraud - Pathfinder Society Scenario 56: The Jester’s Fraud is a Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for 5th to 9th level characters (Tiers: 5–6 and 8–9).
Sent to Taldor to negotiate the purchase of historical manuscripts, the PCs have barely arrived in the village of Evondemor when Tribune Makarius Bourtze bursts into their inn, closely pursued by rampaging annis hags Sabas has somehow managed to summon from the alabaster urn. After the battle, Bourtze begs the Pathfinders to help recover the dangerous stolen relic, as well as other stolen accursed items, and promises artifacts and documents for the Grand Lodge should they help.
Sunday, January 31,2011, 3 pm
PFS 47 The Darkest Vengeance - Pathfinder Society Scenario 47: The Darkest Vengeance is a Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for 1st to 5th level characters (Tiers: 1–2 and 4–5).
Venture-Captain Basia Kalistoff dispatches the PCs to the Karcau Lodge to investigate Venture-Captain Skeldon Miregrold. On their arrival, they find Miregrold Manor mysteriously vacant. Their investigation draws the attention of some thuggish squatters who’ve recently taken up residence in the lodge. Dressed in stolen garb, they pose as the Manor’s rightful occupants. The thugsattempt to convince the PCs to stay the night, plotting to kill and rob them while they sleep, provided the PCs don’t first peg them as charlatans. If interrogated, the thugs don’t know what happened to the Manor’s inhabitants, but they may reveal that the estate suddenly went dark
about a week ago and has been vacant since. They admit to having found a couple of stabbed bodies lying about, which they hid in some wine barrels, but insist they are innocent of the murders. Toward the back of the kitchen storeroom, the PCs find a secret door that leads down to
the basement.

I just got my email announcing that pre-registration is opening on Friday. However, the number of Pathfinder Society games on the schedule seems very small and I don't see the Shadow lodge interactive scenarios on the schedule. Will the schedule be updated soon with the additional slots?
This will be my first time at Owlcon (or any game convention for that matter) and I am looking forward to it.
Demoyn |
I am not familiar with Warhorn. So at present the answer is no. Preregistration for OwlCon begins on their site on Friday.
If you would like to become familiar with Warhorn you can go to warhorn.net. Expand the list of conventions and click on Owlcon XXX. D&D 4e has already put their stuff up so you can play around with it and see how much utility it has in planning mods and allowing event attendees to get an idea of how their weekend will play out.
If you don't want to bother than disregard, of course. I mainly mention it because it's standard for D&D and PFS to use Warhorn for convention planning.

The Pathfinder Society schedule for OwlCon is filled except for 4 slots. Have a look at what will be available.
