I really love the consideration that has been given to reward Society Game Masters.
I think there is real opportunity for additional rewards for activities that are already occurring.

1) Each time a GM acts as an event coordinator, but does not actually
run a slot, they should receive a point towards their star rating.

2) Each reserved PFS number that is assigned (and claimed) to a new player, should result in a point toward their star.

Thoughts?

Here are my thoughts:

1) The star rating is really focused on the GM. If a person could get a hundred stars, but never actually run a game, they may not be worthy of the 5th star and maybe not a great GM. I would leave the star system for GM's. Maybe event coordinators could be recognized by something unique on the boards and on their PFS card.

2) Same issue. The star system is for GM's who run a pile of games. Recruiting would have to be something else. I would have got 30 stars from the last convention I helped at. It wouldn't make me any better or a more seasoned GM.

I like your ideas, but I would keep them apart from the star system.

I agree with Dave on this one. The star system should be reserved for GM's, especially the 5th star.

Event organizers, though, should be recognized. I'm just not sure how. Will have to think about that one.

I understand your reservations, but realistically that could never happen! Anyone who is coordinating regular events is also GMing a fair share of the time as well, it goes with the territory!

I think recruiting new players who sit at my game table (and return to future events) is not the same thing as signing people up at big Cons. Running piles of games doesn't necessarily make you a better GM either! Recruiting is the backbone of 'Living' campaigns! When you give a first time player the full package treatment, starting with recruitment and delivering a great game session, they will be back again and again!

That is WAY more important than piles of anything...

You don't get the 5th star automatically. :-)

This creates some strange incentives. For example: My buddy and I put together a PFS group and recruited about 7 new people into PFS. However we've been encouraging people to sign up for PFS and download the guide before they arrive because our gaming window is short. If you get stars for using the reserved numbers then we don't get credit for players we've recruited.

If there were an incentive for recruiting I would hope it would be structured so you don't have to work the system to get credit for it.

It would be great for me if reporting sessions got me credit towards a star, but it's simply not the same amount of effort as GMing. Perhaps reporting 5-10 games gets you a point towards a star. Reporting takes me about 5 minutes. Comparing that to 2-3+ hours of prep time, 5 hours of GMing, dealing with maps, minis, etc and it's not even close.

I agree about the value of coordinating and recruiting. I coordinate for our local shop. We had three full tables last night and two brand new players. We have to keep beating the drums to get new players into the game. And I like the idea of coming up with some way to recognize this. I just think the star system is strickly for GMing games. I am sure that nobody would earn their 4 stars without running a good bunch of games, but as the event coordinator for our local game shop, I organize a minimum of ten tables per month, not to mention I GM a handful of those, so I would really increase my numbers.

I just think a different system would be useful. Personally I just enjoy getting more folks into the game and having very busy game days. We have our PFS Yahoo group for the Front Range of Colorado (RMPathfinder) and we have roughly 75 members now that actively participate in events at 5 different shops (9 options per month to play) from CO Springs to North Denver.

Josh, I hear you about the 5th star and I hope to earn that one myself someday. Maybe next year at PaizoCon?
