(Effective) Balor Lord

Advice

Hey guys,

I've been looking for an effective Balor lord to throw at my party, CR 23-25 tops, but I do not see a good stat block around. I think the barbarian 5 exemple seems like a poor choice unless you like balors who like to exchange full attacks with its ennemies and not use spell-like abilities. In that case might as well use some Tarrasque.

Also, how would you run him?
No splatbooks please.

give em wizard or sorc levels and maybe eldrich knight levels?

If you want a stay back and cast type of guy out of a Balor I would be unorthodox and give him a few additional spell like abilities/feats.

For me that would be Summon Monster & appropiate feats for more minion goodness (Vrocks/Glabrezu/Hezrou ftw).

I also would let have him a Marilith spouse which I would give a few bard levels - fits thematically and has nice synergy with the demon horde.

Hm and for a more LOTR Balrog type you could apply the giant template, take out the teleport as it does not fit thematically and add instead rank 0 deity abilities. It would be: maximum hit points, charisma as deflection bonus to AC, and a +1 divine bonus on about everything. Could give him that extra edge to stay alive in direct combat. Add some spell-liek abilities here and there, then done.

Boost spell casting level (both spells and SLA) and CR to 24 give the balor 8 sorcerer levels or CR and CL 25 with 10 sorcerer.

- feats Empower SLA and Quicken SLA

- Master of Magic ability, with the ability to quicken up to 8th level spells will be potent.

But can those sorcerer levels help much? The balor would only be able to cast 1-4th with a mediocre caster level, while having the ability to cast a bunch of end-game spell-liek abilities.

I do like the feats choice though.
Where do you take the 'master of magic' ability?

It is an option from the balor lord's description, one of the powers they can pick.

I also said to increase caster level for both his SLA and spells to the CR of the balor lord, a CL of 8 would be far too insignificant.

I am using the Magic Rating system myself whenever I think it is appropriate :

copy and paste that link and consider using it for your BBEG, I'd still recommend raising the caster level of the SLA to match.

Some spells as simple as an armor spell or displacement can make a world of difference for such an encounter, do not underestimate the lower level spells impact. Combined with the elite scores, treasure added and caster level increase it will very effective still.
