Hm. I'm excited, but I notice a lack of an obvious "brawler" in the spread showing archetypes, but it may be hidden in there somewhere.

d'oh beaten to the punch by a fish!

also, Jason, you keep managing to top yourself every single week with these previews. I need this book now!

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16, 2012 Top 32

I'm having flashbacks to AD&D 2nd Ed character kits... and I like it!

The brawler was there under free hand fighter and brutal pugilist I would guess.

Damn right, much much better then endless base classes.

I wonder what a Free Hand Fighter gets, and if all Eldritch Knights should be getting excited.

I played a wild mage back in 2e with an unarmed combat kit,was damned fun

Free-hand Fighter is likely the poor type of Fighter left behind after the Big Guy 2H Fighter together with his younger brothers TWF Fighter and Shield Basher all went to the cool party.

I like how the antipaladin in the picture is wielding Frostmourne. No like... really.

Srsly.

I'm especially excited about the new Combat Styles for the ranger. Much anticipated.

This looks fabulous. I must admit that there are some things not here that I would have liked to see. But I'm not complaining! I hope that maybe 2011 will bring more class variants from Paizo. In the meantime, I plan on enjoying the options presented here.

Well, I am a bit disappointed that the Cloistered Cleric isn't making a return and that no options for "no supernatural abilities" Monks seem to be presented (or for "Martial Artists that aren't from monasteries"), but the rest looks excellent!

I am especially pumped for the Weapon Adept Monk and Swashbuckler Rogue. :)

Brutal Pugulist and Drunken Master look like "non-supernatural" unarmed warriors. Unless you count "drunk as hell" as supernatural :)

Curious that Samurai and Ninja are not included. Is that a hint of things to come, perhaps ?

We'll see, but Brutal Pugilist is surely more of a boxer and I don't want every martial artist I play to be a drunk. ^^

Dark Archive

I need this book. Core class alternatives have always been one of my pet peeves.

Looks more like Soul Reaver to me.

I am especially excited about archetypes since we haven't used prestige-classes since about 2002 or 2003 - this seems like JUST the thing for our group. :D

And a debuffing bard? Sweet way to turn the class on its head! Reminds me of the Jester from the Dragon Compendium.

If Jason inserts a typo like this, I'd rather had hoped it would end up being a "mime-affecting ability". :p

Shadow Lodge

One of my big complaints about clerics is that cleric players seem to pick gods based on domain powers rather than on what sort of deity they think their character should worship. Hopefully sub-domains will give some good choices for all the gods so this is less of a problem.

I am a little disappointed Battle Sorcerer apparently didn't make the cut.

...

I'm overwhelmed. In a good way.

I am guilty of this. My issue with the cleric is that the only class features they get are their domains and channel energy. Channel energy is used primarily for the entire parties benefit. That leaves your domains. I wouldn't want to be stuck with crappy domain choices.

With this, Jason Bulmahn steps over the threshold of mortal design genius into the realm of the gods of gaming.

I salute you.

Nice,
It really is nice to see some of the suggestions from the boards made it into the APG. :) Just off the top of my head, I am looking forward to the Investigator and Detective variants for Rogue and Bard.

Also the Zen Archer (One of my suggestions in the suggestion thread!). Dare I also hope that my suggestion of an unarmed combat style for the Ranger is one of the combat styles alluded to? Honestly that's all you need to make a Tarzan type character (Well, that and a couple of feats).

NOTE: Not saying it was just the fact I suggested them, lots of other people did as well. Just nice to see something you suggest actually make it.

seekerofshadowlight wrote:

I guess free hand fighter is a fighter with one free hand, and brutal pugilist sounds like he doesn't want to hug you - more like a bare knuckle boxer.

Gorbacz wrote:

Paizo keeps saying that they want to do a big Tien sourcebook when they do Jade Regent, and that this book will look into characters with a Tien flavour (but it's apparently not decided yet whether we'll get new base classes or archetypes)

Mon wrote:

I still wonder why it's not called jester. It's not as if anyone can copyright that.

I wouldn't call that a big complaint about clerics. I would call that a big complaint about your powergaming players! ;-P

Yeah. Alternate class versions (whether you call them archetypes or not) and rogue talents are worlds better at doing that sort of thing than PrCs ("What do you mean, I can't be a cat burglar yet? What's it about cat burglars that require me to be frikking level 6 before I can become one?")

If only the assassin was there...

I find this interesting, as proteans are snaky, anyway. And they seem to be the only other outsider race that get one, while the order-loving creeps or daemons don't. I guess it makes sense for the lawfuls, they're all so right and proper about anything, they want to keep the races segregated.

It's a rare thing to catch inevitables sleeping around.

Ki Mystic, I like the sound of that.

Hadouken!

Wow. D&D done right - I must be dreaming.

The result of the reroll must be taken, even if it is worse than the original roll. You can use this ability once per day at 8th level and one additional time per day for every six levels above 8th.

I fail to see how this is usable. Before the roll is revealed? Meaning you have as much chance to help as you have to hinder the roll? You can't force the best or the worse result, but must take the second one?

Before the result of the roll is revealed. If a creature attacks an opponent and rolls a 12, you can have it re-roll, before you know whether 12 is enough to hit or not.

Thank you sir. Quite a subtle difference.

Does that mean all of the DM rolls would have to be made in the open as soon as a character have this power? Seems cumbersome.

And again, I don't see the benefit of this.

For the ability to be useful to me, I want to know the result, so whether the to-hit roll actually hit. If the creature misses, I am not going to make him reroll. With how it is worded now, it's more of a crapshoot.

I can see this while playing:

DM rolls D20 in attempt to hit the Sorceror.
Player 1 (Sorceror): "Wait, I want you to reroll that, using my Tugging Strands ability."

DM: "Well, ok." Rolls again and then asks Player 1 "What is your AC again?"

Player 1: "14."

DM: "Ok, I hit." Rolls damage. "Btw, you should have let me keep the first roll, I would have missed."

Player 1: *sigh*

I don't see the benefit of this ability. Or am I not understanding this right?

Um, yes with a side order of yes please? This is all I wanted to know. Paizo is amazing.

I want to try out so many of the archetypes here. It seems as though they have mounted builds for several of the classes (Mounted Fury, Roughrider and Horselord) Shield based specialties (phalanx fighter and shield master) and single one handed weapon types- the Freehand fighter and the swashbuckler.

I could list every single one that excites me, but I'll be honest, the one that really made my day was the Drunken Master Monk- I've wanted a decent way to play this for a long time, and I really hope this is it.

Hobbun wrote:

You know the result of the die roll, just not the total result-

DM rolls a D20 and rolls a natural Twenty.

DM: Nice.

Cleric Player: Not that nice, I use my Tugging strands ability to make you re-roll.

DM: probably for the best, the enemy was using a scythe and power attack anyway...

Note: this relies on the idea that the DM rolls out in the open- if he doesn't you don't want to use this power on the dm- but you can use it to negate natural ones for your side.

Ok, that makes more sense. And yes, our DM does not roll in the open or gives us numbers when he rolls to hit, he just says “You were or were not hit”. Probably why it wasn’t clicking with me.

Thanks.

No problem, In one of my games I have a character who worships fate, so that subdomain is of interest

This power will be rather easy to use, I think:

DM: NATURAL TWENTY WITH A SCYTHE MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !
Player: Errr ... try again, mister !
DM: *cries*

Yeah, being a DM is difficult of on the emotions, on one hand you want the players to win, on the other hand, you don't want to sit around taking a beating either. I compromise by making the characters wish they were dead.

I feel kinda bad for Treantmonk- he really has his hands busy- I just have to add a few domains to my sorcerer guide, he has tons of things to do.

He wouldn't do it if he didn't like to. Also, he gets lavish praise, that also counts for something. ^^

The real victim of APG is Josh J Frost - poor fella has to evaluate every feat, spell, item, ability and archetype for PFS legality. ;)

I'm also pretty sure he plans to write up a witch guide- I'm pretty interested in his guides, not as much of the APG itself, but- you know new Treantmonk guide- cool.
