Evasion - Monk vs Rogue and Ranger

This came in our latest Council of Thieves session ...

The wording for the ranger and rogue evasion class featue read the same while the evasion class feature for the monk is worded slightly differently. Specifically, the monk's wording say it only works on area spells while the ranger and rogue version has no such apparent limitation. Is this an intentional limitation on the monk or should evasion work the same for all three classes?

The wording is slightly different but you usability remains the same. It reads as follows

"Evasion (Ex): At 2nd level or higher, a monk can avoid damage from many area-effect attacks. If a monk makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage."

You are reading too much into the flavor text fluff from the first sentence. The part that defines that ability is the second part, talking specifically about whenever they make a reflex on an attack that normally deals half damage blah blah blah.

Long story short, they are the same.

Scarab Sages

Agreed. The first line includes area effects, but does not exclude anything. The second line specifies what is included and what is excluded.

It certainly seems like it probably was intended that all three Evasions work the same way. That was how many of us were inclined to lean during the game BUT it IS worth noting, and questioning, why the wording is different at ALL in the Monk version in the first place, especially in that it mentions area spealls when the Ranger and Rogue versions do not.

It's also worth noting that the Rogue and Ranger versions both say "a rogue can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility". Does the lack of the "can avoid even magical and unusual attacks" text in the Monk's Evasion mean the Monk cannot use it against magical attacks? Again, it would seem like all three were intended to work exactly the same but, if this is indeed the case, then the initial "flavor" text can be rather misleading ...

FYI, here is the exact wording for each:

Rogue
Evasion (Ex): At 2nd level and higher, a rogue can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If she makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the rogue is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless rogue does not gain the benefit of evasion.

Ranger
Evasion (Ex): When he reaches 9th level, a ranger can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If he makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the ranger is wearing light armor, medium armor, or no armor. A helpless ranger does not gain the benefit of evasion.

Monk
Evasion (Ex): At 2nd level or higher, a monk can avoid damage from many area-effect attacks. If a monk makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if a monk is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless monk does not gain the benefit of evasion.

The fact that the first line is worded differently in the Monk version does make you at least stop and think ...

Stop and think, yes. Differentiate, no.

Paizo has been consistent enough in their wordings of things, that I would suspect that they would have changed the name of the class feature if it was intended to work differently. A (rather vital)class feature such as that would have been subject to Errata fairly quickly if it turned out to be worded wrong.

Very much this. It seems like something that slipped between the cracks during editing. Like one person wrote the class blocks for rogue and ranger, while another wrote the monk abilities.

Liberty's Edge

That may indeed be the case. If so, it seems like something that could / should be worded more clearly in the next printing and in the PFSRD etc

Silver Crusade

A question for all of you on evasion if a muliclass character gets evasion from class a at 2nd levebel and class b at 9th level. does the latter increse to improved evasion? Or just reamin Evason?

Only if one of the classes specifically states it. Otherwise it remains Evasion.

They are the same and should read the same. I will see about getting this corrected.
