How much time have you spent learning origami, flower arranging, or learning Japanese to watch anime in the original language? ;-P

I didn't learn flower arrangement, but I did learn the Japanese tea ceremony from an old baa-san in town.

Every single motion in the tea ceremony is scripted. The exact motion to move the pot of boiling water. The exact way to hold your hand while mixing the matcha. The exact way to fold the cloth into a narrow point to clean the edge of the cup. The exact way to turn the cup to drink. The exact way to slurp the last swallow of tea with some noise to indicate the deliciousness of the tea.

Unfortunately, she didn't speak any English, my Japanese is only passable in everyday communication, and I'm left handed, so I did all the motions backwards.

I got slapped a lot. :(

I actually read my manga in the native Japanese, but I think I'm now officially too old to understand the current manga language.

This might help. Then again, it might not. I expressed an interest in learning the language, and a friend handed me this. I've never read Manga in any language.

Sovereign Court

I've only skimmed the thread, so I don't know if it was suggested by the OP.

If the issue is the that you have roll-players in the group, then you could talk to them and ask them to bone up on their role-playing... but maybe that isn't something that interests them all that much.

Another approach might be to try out some more other types of mechanics that would encourage more roleplaying.

If you dip into the FATE system it wouldn't be hard to apply the Aspects mechanics to Pathfinder. By adding in fate points and compells it could drag more roleplaying out while also having enough mechanical edge to entice the players to use it.

Shadow Lodge

Wait... I think I know what this thread is about now.

It should be called: "Who rolls Human charaters without a hill?"

If this joke has already been posted, I don't care. It's still funny to me at least.

I have to admit, it's Half-Orc, Dwarf, Human or Gnome, in that order for me. Half-Orcs strike me as that angry loner, who has great personal justification for giving the world the finger in a heartbeat after the way the 'good' people of the world have treated him.

One reason why I love Half-Orcs:
I had one Half-Orc Barbarian standing trial for a crime he didn't commit, the Watch just assumed Orc Blood = Criminal, and after the court used the Circle of Truth on me and found out I wasn't the criminal, she turned around and blasted them "You accuse me of being a monster because half of me is an Orc even when I am innocent. Well, I accuse all of you of being the true monsters, holding yourselves involate while blaming all that is different from you for every ill you suffer. At the very least, the Orcs are open about their evil natures. You Humans are so cruel and deceptive you even lie to yourselves about your own black hearts!" and then "I've never met an Orc in my life, so how do you explain all the hatred in my heart? Look in the mirror, you overgrown rats! You sow the seeds of your own failures and tragedies with your hatred for anything that doesn't fawn over you!"

She got banished from the city on the spot, but in a few months there were huge race-riots within the Citadel as the local Half-Orcs, Halflings and Clanless Dwarves tried to leave the Citadel when new laws were passed (by the same Nobility that I'd pissed off with my little diatribe) that prevented them from having voices on the Council or owning a controlling share in a business, were barred and then went on a rampage. Eventually they broke out, tracked down my Barbarian and we ended up founding a new town just a couple of day's march from Citadel ... and then had the non-Human races coming to us to trade. When I did my little rant in the stand, I thought the DM would be pissed at my character effectively getting 'kicked out' of the adventure, but she was simply estatic at my character roleplaying my Chaotic (Seeing the Individual rather than the Race, and being an intensely 'unqiue' person) and Good (standing up for the right thing, even at the cost of personal harm) and by mid-teens level the town of Adara's Courage had fended off half a dozen attacks from the Citadel, had several thriving shrines to the Dwarven, Gnome, Halfling and non-lawful Human Gods. I did get accused of having an Inner Socialist as the town worked along the premise of all food and water and materials belonged to everyone equally, so long as they all worked for it.

Dwarves can be Clannish folk, but nothing is stopping you from being a social revolutionary or from a 'Surfacer' family of Dwarves that have spent most of their lives in a Human (or other) City. The always-laughing Dwarven Enchanter who replies to every out-of-the-box plan by taking his cigar out of his mouth, grinned madly and saying "Brilliant!" (Will link the picture later), the dour, pessimistic Fighter "This isn't going to work. We need to do this the right (Dwarven) way." who grudgingly admits that the other races "Can do it ... just not the right way!" or the social Rebel, the CQ Dwarven whatever who delights in being as 'Un-Dwarish' as possible, simply as a form of personal release.

Humans .... are you !@#$ing kidding me here? Any number of nationalities, plus the permutations of the different nationalities growing up in different ethnic regions for further social or personality mutations? Mechanically the Human has the ability to either specialise or diversify, that bonus feat and bonus skill-points plus their free-floating +2 to any racial ability allows them to succeed at damn near any choice in life. A Vurdrani wandering Golarion makes for a great fish-out-of-water when encountering societies where one isn't born to a caste or that holds females above males. A Vudrani Paladin who despises his people's tendency towards female infantcide might adventure to gather the renown and social clout to make it illegal to perform such an act, or to find a way to get a number of the Thousand Gods to come down and prohibit the act. An Ulfen might just travel because she enjoys seeing the world, and the chance to knock boots with somebody who doesn't stink of beer, unwashed furs and snow or any number of reasons.

Gnomes ... they're adorably psychotic at the same time as being incredibly under-estimated by most people. Golarion Gnomes especially fit this bill, and while I normally loathe the Small Races since I love getting up close and personal in combat and the Small Size makes that somewhat unfeasible, the Golarion Gnome is just that sort of maniac that she will do this in character. A Gnome Eldritch Knight is likely to be a hilarious grab-bag of spells and weapon-choices, and any Gnome will be constantly on the look-out for new experiences to avoid the Bleaching. Any other race caught in a snare that keeps them suspended ten feet above a pack of snarling Wolves would be trying to climb back up the rope. The Gnome would be swinging back and forth going "Weeeeeeeeeeeeheehee!" or bungee-jumping off whatever the Snare is attached to. They're just .... insane. Even the Lawful ones are nuts.

The only roleplaying difference I see between humans and other races is that humans can't get an interesting story explaining why they have done away from their stereotype, because they don't have one. Otherwise all races have the same RP potential and if anyone doesn't come up with a personality for their character, they're not welcome in my game.

I have only played 2 maybe 3 chars who weren't Human. I love the rules for em(waac player in me). But I like that they are so common that you can blend in easily, or stand out by being vastly different. Humans cover most of the world in most campaigns and therefore can be from a huge variety of cultures, some completely alien to others, and in that way are as different as an Elf might be to some human cultures.
