Ranged Legerdemain Question

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So the Ranged Legerdemain ability says the following:

Ranged Legerdemain (Su): An arcane trickster can use Disable Device and Sleight of Hand at a range of 30 feet. Working at a distance increases the normal skill check DC by 5, and an arcane trickster cannot take 10 on this check. Any object to be manipulated must weigh 5 pounds or less. She can only use this ability if she has at least 1 rank in the skill being used.

Does the slight of hand ability work like telekinesis at range? Lets say there is a gem on a holder 30 feet away, can the arcane trickster use slight of hand to make it disappear and move to his pouch?

Well, you can use it to float the gem out of the holder and across to intervening space and into your pouch, but so can a simple mage hand spell.

The wonders of ranged legerdemain is that you can use it to lift the same gem out of some rich nobleman's pocket without him noticing to float across the intervening space and into you pouch, which you otherwise cannot do with mage hand as it only works on untended objects.

Right so in either case as long as the slight of hand roll beats the perception of observers, no one would see the gem cross the intervening space right?

Presumably. You keep it low to the floor, duck it in behind table legs, etc.

My own ponderings on this power were that the AT could pick a lock at a range of 30'. Could be handy for avoiding traps or for working out an escape.
