PFS in Portland, OR?

Hi folks,

I'm leaving NYC :( and moving to PDX in July. I was wondering if there are any regular PFS games in Stumptown? If not, I'd be more than happy to start a weekly or bi-weekly game at one of the local gaming stores (given space and availability). I'm a 2-star PFS GM who's been running games in NYC for the last year-and-a-half, and my players are generally pretty happy.

Thanks,

BrOp (Alex)

I wish there were.

It's on my to-do list. :)

I can vouch for Alex's quality as a top-notch GM. You should totally let him run some PFS adventures for you.

I can second the praise for Alex he will be missed in NYC.

I live in PDX and am always down to game. I play on Saturdays with a group at least twice a week but am interested in playing with a more consistant group. Hit me up when you get here and we'll figure it out.

I'll let folks know via these boards and perhaps in a local Meetup group when (not if) I start something in Portland in August. Has anyone played at a local gaming store? Is Guardian Games the best venue?

I've only done Guardian Games. It's mediocre; I much prefer my dining room table for gaming.

Sure. I hosted a lot of Greyhawk, so I'm used to it. The apartment's different that from Greyhawk, but I host a couple of homegames, and we do fine.

Alex-

I am in the Portland area until about the second week of August. I played my first few society games just a few weeks ago at PaizoCon and would love to get some more games in. My schedule at work is a bit odd so please let me know when you can run something!

I live about 40 minutes north of Portland. I would be more than willing (eager!) to make the drive down there to do some gaming. :)

Glad to know there are some folks in the area who are interested! Now I just have to finish packing and hire a mover and find a place to live in SE or SW.

Ahhhh Alex,

Good Dming is a talent and you my friend are quite talented. You will be sorely missed.

Ive never played in a PFS game before but Id be interested in giving it a try - I live out in Beaverton.

The more the merrier! Or better said, the more, the more likely we can get a quorum together on a regular basis to field legal tables.

There are loads of gamers in the Portland area - I am sure enough to have at least one game.

I think someone tried to get something going at Guardian Games before. It is a great store, but it is sort of noisy. You should check it out to see if it fits your GMing vibe.

I'm here (although I'm still looking for a place to live). I went by Other Worlds Games in Hillsdale, and Knightfall Games out in Beaverton and both seem willing to host games there. I've been to Guardian Games on past visits, but have not asked them yet this time around.

Hello again folks,

Well, I am now in Portland and have almost locked down a place to live. With my wife starting at Lewis & Clark at the end of August, I'm thinking that we'll be in SW somewhere. While driving around looking at apartments, I just happened to (you know, completely accidentally) stop by a few of the local gaming stores, and all whom I have talked to are happy to have a regular PFS game there.

So here's the question: what is a better location for everyone? The two options that work best for me are either Guardian Games on SE 3rd Ave, or Other World Games in Hillsdale in SW.

I've set a tentative place and date for my first Portland Pathfinder Society game: August 20th at Other World Games in the Hillsdale neighborhood of SW. Start time should be 6 or 7 PM.

As there will be many newbies to Pathfinder Society playing, we'll be playing a Tier 1-2 scenario TBD.

Once I have confirmed the date and time with the owner of Other World Games (although he okayed the date and time with me ahead of time), I will post something over on the Portland Dungeons and Dragons Meetup boards. You can also follow my ongoing search for players on those boards HERE.

Any takers?

Fridays are usually homegame days for me, but I'll see how things go, see which scenario you choose, and see if any new PCs inspire me.

OtherWorld is a pretty tight space; let's hope the Magic junkies don't take make it hell for you.

I agree, Other World is tight, and would only work for a single table game. If we ever expand to needing multiple tables, we'll have to move to a different venue. Speaking of which, do you have ideas what other places might be possible (other than Guardian Games)?

I've confirmed a time and place. My first Pathfinder Society game in Portland is scheduled for August 20th at Other World Games in Hillsdale from 6:30 to 11. That should give us plenty of time to finish any last bits of character creation and run through the scenario.

Exact scenario TBD, but it will definitely be Tier 1-2 designed for brand new PCs.

Please muster in this thread OR at the Portland Dungeons and Dragons Meetup Group. We currently have three seats left at the table for the 20th.

How did the August 20th game go Alex?

Thank you for the generous offer of hosting it in your apartment, Matt. The only reason I would shy away from accepting, is because I hope to grow these bi-weekly games. In NYC we were able to field two tables a week. I am hoping to eventually be able to do that here every other week. I also hope that people will become more interested in playing Pathfinder Society, and that other folks will volunteer to GM as well.

I currently lair in Portland. If Otherworld Games proves a tad too tight for maximum nerdosity I would recommend nosing around at Rainy Day Games in Aloha. The staff is top notch and there is ample room for gaming. However, I'm not sure of their table schedule since I throttle my poor game group from one of our houses each month.

There will also be some Pathfinder Society mojo happening in October at the Washington County Fair Complex for ConQuest Oregon. Keith Baker is going to be there as well.

Thanks for letting me know about the con, Herbo. I had heard about and seen some advertising for OryCon, but that seems to be more of a sci-fi writers convention. I'm completely new to the area, so I hardly know anything about the local con scene. Glad to see there are some gaming conventions as well.

Gaurdian Games (www.guardiangamesportland.com) is a really cool place. You should check it out yourself and not just take a couple words for it. I have run greyhawk games there and it is a very good venue. When I mentioned PFS there was a LOT of interest. If you wanted to run a regular game there they will add you to their calendar of events. The management there is very nice. They have large tables for gaming, snacks that can be purchased, AND they just applied for a liquor license.

I would be very interested in playing some society games.

Very cool. I am definitely looking at Guardian Games for when/if our PFS group gets too large for Other World. I've already dropped by Guardian and talked to one of the employees, and both they and the space were great. I've had some nice conversations with the owner of Other World, and since it's only 5 minutes from my house, I thought I'd start things off there, purely for my own benefit :)

Just to let everyone know, the new Portland PFS chapter is going strong! We just finished our second game last Friday, and we will be meeting again on Friday 9/17 at Other Worlds Games. At the moment I am the only one GMing, but I hope to eventually grow the group and have enough players to run two tables every other week. There are still two seats open for our next game, so if you'd like to join us, please visit the Meetup Site.

So what weekend should I try to make it down to run a table and maybe even get one of my PCs out for a spin?

You're welcome any time, Mark. Our next game is 9/17 (next Friday), and we'll be playing every other week after that.

Hey out there...

Is anyone from the Oregon area looking at going to the Year of the Shadow Lodge event in Redmond this Saturday, Oct 2nd?

-Matt

Shadow Lodge

I hope some of you guys are able to make it up, and I definitely wish you luck in establishing PFS in the Portland area. I know I was floundering a bit at first trying to get things established in Olympia, but it's amazing how quick things get rolling when you get the right people together :)

Hey not sure if this is dead yet, but was the most recent one I could find.

I was just looking to check out how RPGs are doing, last time I played was 6 years ago with my middle school buddies pretending we had any idea what we were doing.

I'm pretty sure my 3.0 books are pretty dead now and PFS doesn't appear too expensive to start. I'm really just wondering if anyone would actually be willing to take someone who has virtually no RPG experience.

by the way, I'm in Portland, that's why I asked.

Are these games still active? A friend and I are actively seeking an ongoing Friday night RPG session.

I have been to Guardian Games and played once in the Friday group that plays there. It's all sorts of awesome. Group is cool and Guardian games is one of my favorite gaming shops... and I travel all across the US for work... checking out gaming shops in my spare time, Guardian Games is second only to a shop in Appleton Wisconsin. Also, as a previous poster mentioned, Rainyday Games in Aloha is a great store also with great staff.
