It was published in dragon as fighter/mage, they own that and most likely they would try and protect it or they could loose other things also. And all the headlines do is prove once more it is a bad term that does not mean what most folks here try and force it to mean.

If a person can use a word to convey a specific meaning to an audience, and the vast majority of the audience can comprehend the use of said word, then said word now means what the person says it to mean, whether we like it or not.

to most non gamers it does not mean what ya think it does. To gamers you either 1 need to explain what it is as they do not know or a good number of old schoolers think your talking about githyanki as in the game it has a very specific meaning.

The word has no meaning until you sit down and explain it..then most have no clue why it's used anyhow.

Anyhow paizo can not use it as it is in fact owned by Wotc.

Stop trying to "educate" me about the meaning of the word. I am not at all confused by the many different uses of the word gish.

I can go start a thread with the word in the title on just about any RPG-centric message board out there, and receive all sorts of replies from people ready to help me with my Fighter/Caster issue. Many times I will also probably get one or two replies from older gamers who can't help but attempt to point out that I am "doing it wrong" by using the word. Just because you (and I, for the record) dislike the word being used in this manner doesn't mean that it is going to fall out of use.

does not mean I am incorrect in that company's other then WOTC can not use the word.

It will fall out of use when folks stop trying to make it fit, not before, but what gamers say and what a company can use are not the same thing. Which is what I was hinting at

Wotc owns the word, no other company is gonna try to sneak it in for fear of getting sued and having to pull a product.

I can still dream about the headlines and chuckle, though!

Also gish.

It is in a dragon they own, they are the first company to use the term in that way, they also printed it first in the find follo if I recall in the 80's

They own the word, and they have the money to enforce any "rights" they think they have. You put it in a book and they think your trying to steal IP they will come after you. Sure you can settle out of court but you will be going to court meanwhile your books are going unsold and you loose money

Its a possible fight most company's are not even gonna try.

Yeah man, English is my first language. I know my spelling blows. Now I often spell thinks how I say them, and yeah I pronounce idea..ideal. Alot of people do around here, so when I type it out how I say it often overrides how it is spelled. And I just do not notice.

I get alot of grief from my spelling online, eh by this point in life I am used to it. Be nice if I could spell better, but the words just don't look right..oddly enough I spell better while drunk. Something a few chatters tease me over endlessly

They also published the words "the" and "dragon" but they don't own the intellectual property to anything using those words. Since TSR (not WotC) published a magazine and a book with a race that uses this as one of its terms they would have first dibs to put a trademark on the term. It does not mean they have. For the record I'm certain Githyanki and Githzerai are trademarked terms, though I'm unsure if Gish is. Unless you can show me something that says gish is a trademark of wizards of the coast, I'm going to doubt it. Just sayin, don't assume things like that.

eh, up to you. But your not putting thousands of dollars at risk hoping they will not come after you either. Unless your willing to go to court and fight for the use of the word in that way which is very tied to there IP, it's a risk most just will not take.

Um...no I'm saying one can actually just find out whether it is trademarked or not. Something being trademarked is not this super big secret that companies keep to bait other companies into doing things. You can, you know, look it up.

Yes, you can. However they can say rightly so they made the term up. And claim it belongs to them and is tied in with IP they on. Now they may or may not win, however while you fight it out in court your product is not being sold .

It is not a fight you want really. Sure you may win, but how much money and time did you waste to use a term that really is not very useful or descriptive? It's a word very associated with there IP and product, they will move to protect that IP if they think they need to.

Why pick a fight that will cost you money and you could very well loose when you can just coin you own term with zero tie in to another company IP?

If after 30 years or so they haven't bothered to actually make an official claim on it, then they have effectively given up their right to a claim. If they did bother to do such a thing, then it's a moot point.

eh were off topic, but yes they do own the usage, a few folks at paizo have said as much. And if your not willing to take a risk of having to go to court over it gambling with your product and possibly lose and have to destroy your print run, then it's simply not worth trying to use a word that only has meaning for it's use because another company gave it that use.

Nope. I want it to be called the book of gish

Get used to disappointment.

@seeker Is there some point to stupid naming wars at this point in time? It's pretty obvious Paizo isn't going to name anything gish so please stop bringing this back up, at this point I'm not sure if you are the troll or the others are but it's pretty pointless.

I don't know why people knock the marriage relationship thing. I got a pretty sweet deal.

I knock marriage, not long term relationships. I've been with the same woman for 6 years and lived together for more than 5. Largely positive results. We would gain nothing from marriage.

Exactly. Other than a large bill :)

Pity a service member can't viably live with a significant other before making E-5 without being married. Leads to too many immature marriages and strife in the lower enlisted. But hey, that's for another thread, not this one.

Actually my wife get along great. Plus she is way hotter than me
