Being a liar and a politician is like saying you're a human and a Homo sapiens. You don't get to be president by subscribing to a radical honesty philosophy.

As far as I can tell, Obama is totally nonremarkable, as far as presidents go. In 100 years, I doubt if anyone will remember who he was. Or have you been sucked in by the cult of personality?

He means Obama's a mediocre president. Obviously he'll be remembered, probably only on the basis that he's the first black president. He still has two years to change peoples' opinions of him.

Given the strides in civil rights in the last 100 years, I'm not so sure that will be considered too noteworthy in 2110. There's still a long way to go, but 100 years is a fairly long way off.

But, yeah, even if so -- will he be remembered for anything else? Unless a third world war breaks out, or the South secedes again, I'm guessing "no."

The "first" is always considered noteworthy. And in this case, I think it's because of the strides in civil rights. I wonder what Rosa Parks would have thought about the first African-American president?

Heh, well as much as we've spoken on the boards, I thought that'd be fairly obvious.

Seriously though, Obama has been a fairly good president so far IMO, nothing remarkable, but certainly nothing terrible. I've been impressed at his attempts to stay fairly bi-partisan when he could just be steamrolling along with a purely left leaning agenda. And yes I know he is still far left, but I have seen what he's done and tried to do, and it says to me that he is far more centrist than he's being given credit for by the right-wing pundits who at this point I think have actually just gotten to the point that all they can do is find a way to disagree with him because giving him any credit for anything would be EVIL!

I'm going to have to disagree. Maybe our metric for "terrible" is different. I thought Bush was a terrible president too, and Obama has continued and expanded some of Bush's worst policies. The only bipartisan outreach I have seen is purely theater. (Which I'm fine with BTW. I think compromise is overrated.) I don't think he's the least bit centrist unless he's forced into it by some political expediency. I really don't see anything to give him credit for off the top of my head.

As for church, I don't particularly care, but I think it's sad that he would make a public promise about it and then renege. How about just telling reporters that it's a private matter?

You realize that Bush was right wing correct (granted the insane "neo-conservative" right wing that somehow believes you can spend yourself into government savings), so if Obama has expanded some of Bush's policies, then he's expanding right wing legislation, which directly contradicts the idea that the only bi-partisan outreach he's done is theatre.

Also before the spill he introduced legislation to increase off shore oil exploration, which is a right wing desire, I don't believe there is a significant # of lefty's crying drill baby drill.

The health care bill did incorporate republican ideas in it. Right wingers can claim all they want that they were "just for show", or "forced" but really they weren't that bill could've passed without incorporating a single idea from republicans. I'm sorry I don't consider this an all or nothing game. I expected a majority lefty health care bill with some right wing ideas incorporated. That's what we got, somehow though aparently if you aren't incorporating "all" right wing ideas then you aren't incorporating "any".

I think that saying he's shown no effort to be centrist is just ridiculous.

No I don't realize that Bush is right wing. I don't think he was a conservative at all. This might be the root of our disagreement. I think we may be defining right and left wing very differently. What would be the conservative hall marks of the Bush presidency? Did he shrink the size of government? Did he make it less invasive? Did he balance a budget when Republicans controlled the legislative branch? Did he shrink the welfare state? Did he try to protect tax payers from GSE liability exposure? Did he get rid of departments or at least shrink the regulatory burden?

IIRC the answer to all these questions is basically no.

He started a preemptive war in Iraq, and I don't think preemptive war is conservative.

Perhaps the disconnect stems from my conservatism being more libertarian, but IIRC you fairly libertarian also.

So when I see Obama continue statist policies started by Bush that doesn't mean I give Obama credit for being centerist, but I suspect we may be talking past each other due to using different definitions of our terms.

I though you were referring to the church "controversy" about Obama publicly promising (I'm told) to attend a local church in DC with his family then reneging on that promise.

Again we were talking about different things.

BT you're preaching to the choir about bush. Like I said "crazy neo-conservative". That doesn't change the fact that he ran as a republican, that he staffed his administration with fellow republicans or like minded people. So even though the results were IMO the exact opposite of what the right-wing and even the republican party should stand for. The legislation passed under his term is republican legislation and pundits consider it right wing.

BTW the only conservative values I hold are "fiscal", I am very much libertarian in my views (hell I'm outright liberal when it comes to things that I don't think should be government issues, I'm pro legalization, pro gay marraige, etc. Basically, if it's in your home and not harming anyone else, go for it) and consider the bush years as terrible ones for the right wing. That doesn't change the fact that technically they are right wing and literally are republican policies.

Do I think Obama is a stellar or spectacular president, no.

Do I think Obama is a good president who does his best to stick to his ideas when possible and shows an effort to be centrist when he could have just steamrolled over the right and kept his side of the political alley happy, yes I do.

Do I think he's kept all of his promises or that he'll ever rank as a great president, so far no. Do I even agree with his policies or views, not really, I voted libertarian (which yes means I voted for Barr, I've expressed my views about him elsewhere on these boards).

The fact that it was implied in this very thread that Fox News is somehow more biased than MSNBC makes me sad. Because basically it means that mediocre liberal bias of stations like CNN has become the default. I'd actually graph the bias to look something like this:

MSNBC------CNN---X-----Fox

X would be the point of no bias.

I didn't see that implied anywhere, I just expressed my anger at Fox news for allowing her to speak her utter retardation. However you're off in your chart as you seem to be saying that FOX has less bias than MSNBC (if you count the dashes MSNBC has 11 between it and X where FOX only has 5 which would make it more biased than CNN but much less biased than MSNBC, which I don't have any idea how on earth any person could honestly believe anything as silly as that. Granted I don't really watch much news, I tend to listen to news radio (NPR for the left and WDBO for the right) so that I don't have to deal as much with the shoddy state of affairs that is modern TV news media.

At first i was going to respond to this with a *shudder*. Then I sat down and thought about it and I realized that you both were right. Republican does not equal conservative, and conservative does not equal Bush or McCain. There is enough room in this country for a lot of widely varying political views without having to resort to snark, especially when some of the people who hold those views are taking pains to explain/describe themselves to a skeptical public or political rival. I think I have a lot more in common(and more of a genuine beef) with Conservatives, as Liberal as I am, than I do with Republicans, who have become moustache twirlers of late.
