Item Shop Generator

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

About a month ago I decided to sit down and create a spreadsheet that would generate items randomly and allow me to track items that are in stores from week to week. The project is perhaps half done and I've gotten to the point where its a workable generator for anyone that likes to play around with such things. You can generate a Thorp, Hamlet, Village, etc with one press of the button and then save that sheet for later reference, or create a custom shop to suit your desires.

There's a few notes about it though:

1) I left off potions and scrolls for the time being, but as it is I tend to keep potions, scrolls, and general items out of the same shops so the tables are slightly changed. I do plan to give potions and scrolls their own love later however.

2) There are errors, if you catch one, let me know, I'll try to get it fixed. The more eyes the better

3) I'm also using this as an exercise to better my excel skills, so if something is done sloppily and you know of a better/easier method let me know. The amount of rework needed will determine if I implement it or not.

4) For the time being items are Pathfinder only no splat book stuff.

5) None of the cells or sheets are locked at this point so be careful if you're messing around.

6) Its in excel 2007 format

Download it here: here

Questions, comments, and recommendations greatly appreciated

I love the concept...but a few problems

One - the menu at the beginning to generate custom shop, generate throp, etc. doesn't seem to be working. everything goes blank and I get a

"run-time error 13, type mismatch [end, debug, help]"

the save shop item seems to work though, and it does load with a pregenerated list of items.

Liberty's Edge

*highfive* good work! i really like this thing. i'm in favor of all kinds of excel sheets that make things run smoothly.

Here's an updated version, fixed a few small problems I noticed last night: here

I havent seen that error DragonBringerx, could you tell me exactly the steps you went through to get that error? If it is an issue as soon as you open the spreadsheet, there may be another problem somewhere ele.

Looks good, works fine for me. Once you have Potions and Scrolls it will be a great tool for Kingmaker games for anyone who doesn't want to randomly roll on the tables.

I would try re-downloading the file, sounds like something was corrupted in the download.

This is awesome. I'm definitely using this. A lot. It's simple and fast. Exactly what you need when DMing for players that like to do the unexpected... which is always.

You could prob make a random loot gen out of this too if you wanted to just include mundane items too.

Definitely have plans to include that. Just enter the encounter CR, the type of loot the encounter should have and press the generate button.

Scarab Sages

Nice! I was working on something like this last year as a Windows App in C#. The latest bit for it is here. At least, the latest one I uploaded. I have the source code laying around that was a lot more finished, filled out the Medium/Major items and other things.

I'll probably start it up again when the Gamemastery Guide comes out, since they have all the nice random item tables for everything in there, including weapons/armor and such.

Havent tried tbh, if Open Office will read excel 2007 xlsm format with enabled macros you should be good to go though.

Off Open Office's FAQ:

Quote:

The files produced by Microsoft Office 2007 are also called Office Open XML, OpenXML, OOXML, Office 12, .docx, .docm, .xlsx, etc.

* OpenOffice.org 3 can open these files, but it cannot save in these formats.

Maybe try saving it in other formats (xls) and see if it will still function. If not let me know and I may try to make a more Open Office friendly version.

This should be a straight download of an xlsm file, shouldnt be a zip file. This is the cut and paste link(updated version):

http://www.filefront.com/16636809/Item%20Shop.xlsm

If that doesnt work, please let me know :(

it looks like you have a space in the name ( I think that's what the %20 is in the URL) some browsers don't like that, might want to try renaming the file and hosting it again.

figured it out i use google chrome. so i opened IE and tried it and it worked

Odd... I use chrome and I didn't have any issues. I wonder why I lucked out?

Good job riatin!

This will come real handy

Doesn't work.

Very, very cool.

I don't think the macros work in Open Office Calc.

I'd appreciate seeing a version in the older format. XL is not the most easily shared program but the older file formats are easier than the new.

Sigurd

Dark Archive

ok here is the problem i'm having.

My first problem is probably that i'm using excel 2003 (i know old, and this is probably the entire reason for issues but)...

my second problem is that as soon as i open it, it says converting...

then, the menu pops up. If i hit any of the town buttons, it says error 13 (as listed above). If i hit custom list, it asks me for number of items (i assume as normal), except that after i type in my number for each of the 3 options (minor, medium, major) nothing happens...nothing generates.

I click on things...and nothing happens. Didn't seem very user friendly either.

Dragonbringerx: I tried saving it as a 97-03 compatible sheet and most of it didn't work, it returned many #REF errors so I'll guess that may be the problem you're having.

Ravingdork: What version of office do you have? As to the user friendly issues, it was originally just going to be for personal use, but I figured I'd share it for anybody who wanted something similar. It's only about half finished from what my vision is for it and should include far more user friendly menus and instructions on use by the time its finished.

+1

XLSM files would require me to spend money and upgrade from my old, perfectly workable version of Excel. An .xls version would be far more comparable.

Microsoft Office Excel 2007.

Scarab Sages

It doesn't work for me. I can open it but it only show me this:
Minor Items Medium Items Major Items
Heavy Steel Shield +1 1170 Dagger +3 18302 Shocking Burst Heavy Crossbow +5 72350

I can also see the tabs and all the cool formulas and lists. But it doesn't do anything. I opened it in Open Office. It wouldn't open in Excel. (on a Mac)

RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32

If you have office 2007 and it wont do anything, it's possible your macros are disabled. Here's a page that can show you how to enable them (office 2007 is about 1/2 way down the page)
here

Also, I created an .xls version that may run in older versions of excel, I could not get it to work in open office, however. I do not believe open office supports the added VBA functionality of excel at this time (looks like they are woking on it though).xls version

Wow! Riatin thank you for the effort. I'm amazed at how incompatible the new office is with everyone!

I mean no disrespect but it seems like you're in the happy 'I've bought from Microsoft recently' club.

I'm going to stick to Open Office.

Hehe, understandable, at this point a standalone exe would probably be more easily distributed, but I have a bit too much time invested to start over from scratch.

.xls version opens for me (in Excel 2003) and immediately says, "Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close." Doesn't matter if I enable or disable macros (and I assume I need to enable anyway to get it to work properly).

I can try to restore it, but then Excel "repairs" the document, taking out the formulas.

Same exact problem here. It didn't seem to like the transition to an XLS file.

Got it working. Thanks.

I did see a weird error though. There was a +2 siangham listed in the minor items column, while a +1 siangham was listed in the medium items column.

Last I checked, a +2 weapon was superior to a +1 weapon in every way.

Last I checked, a +2 weapon was superior to a +1 weapon in every way.

The table look ups are based on the item tables in the Magic Item Chapter of the Core Rules (pg 468 for weapons). When you roll for a Minor weapon, there is a 70% chance to get a +1 weapon and a 15% chance to get a +2 weapon. When rolling on the Medium Weapon table, there is a 10% chance to get a +1 weapon, an 18% chance to get a +2 weapon, a 28% chance to get a +3 weapon, and a 3% chance to get a +4 weapon. This means that there is considerable possibility of overlap in just the standard +x items from one chart to the next, this is even before you add special abilities to the mix which are +x equivalent items. With the chance for a +2 and an ability it is possible to get a +3 equivalent weapon off the Minor Table and have a +1 weapon on the Medium table, that's how the tables are designed. The price should determine the availability to PC's buying from the Minor table though.

Well, i will continue to check back to see if anyone else who uses 2003 excel can get it to work and how they did it or if you figure out a way to release a compatible version (i tried the other link, and it didn't pop-up "converting" anymore, but i still get errors).

None-the-less, your efforts need to be commended for this. kudos.

New version is now available that includes both scrolls and potions.

1) Both scrolls and potions are generated from the thorp/hamlet/village/city table with the same values (1d4/2d4, etc.) as standard items are.

2)The Treasure Generator isnt available yet, but coming soon.

3)More user friendly menus.

4)Scrolls are set up 1 per scroll, if desired they can easily be combined onto one scroll by adding the gold piece values together. Scrolls are also taken from the 3.5 DMG, name changed where appropriate and sold at the lowest available caster level for programming ease, I may go back and make it more functional later but it's a bit complex and would be considerable work.

Google Docs may be a problem as I'm not sure the VB macros would survive. You would actually have better luck uploading and hosting the file through Google Sites then through Docs.

I wonder if there is a way to use Gadgets or some other scripting thing in GoogleDocs to replicate functionality. Although that's a GoogleDocs learning exercise so not the OPs job :D. Any other brave souls?

I dug this out the other day and am starting to update and improve it.

Also here's a download link: Here (sorry for the 404, had no idea it would die so quickly).
