LOVE this one!

My main character right now is a 7th level Magus (Love the class). I have a Barbarian as a cohort, 6'4" red-haired engine of destruction. Just imagine when I use Enlarge Person on him. Hehehe...

"It's alive!"

(Raise dead or greater spell.)

Health to the body;
Soul spirit and mind;
Of all that ails you;
Let none you still bind.

Heal.

ANIMATE DEAD
"You were dead before,
and are undead now.
So shall you bow,
before me ever more!"

GUST OF WIND
"Dust and detritus all around, I bid thee flee.
'Disperse' I say! 'Disperse' I decree!"

I am thinking back to when everyone thought that D&D was the devils work and taught you real spells....If people had been saying incantations for spells I dont even want to know how many of us would have been burned as witches.

Shimmering wave, Light manifest,
The emission of rainbow and gathered power,
This wall may be stepped through if you would dare.
But its effects you would suffer and thus all despair

Prismatic Wall.

another interesting one

I gather the energy into my palm,
Elemental power, lightning tamed

Shocking Grasp

All this brings to mind is women standing around the cauldron in the old days

"Bubble Bubble Toil and Trouble, Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble!"

They are captured and burned at the stake screaming "WE ONLY WANTED TO MAKE THE STEW BOIL FASTER!!!!!!"

Away fire, away light,
Bathe in darkness, enter night.

Surely we can do better! :D

Couple of favorites from the Gargoyles cartoon. The first makes a good Stone to Flesh spell. The second is a beautiful Geas.

Fearsome creature who would stay
Unchanged by the light of day,
Remain you thus throughout the night,
And be thou flesh by dawn's fair light.

Across the mists of space and time
we pose this covenant sublime:
Macbeth his youth doth offer here,
to make this one a force to fear,
While she with fang and claw and wing
doth swear sweet death his foes to bring.
By their acceptance are they consigned
unto each other's fate designed,
forever and eternal bound,
and each the other's pain resound

Couple more from the Charmed TV series: Speak with Dead, summoning and Banishment.

Hear these words, hear my cry,
spirits from the other side,
come to me, I summon thee,
cross now the great divide

Powers of the witches rise,
course unseen across the sky,
come to us who call you near,
come to us and settle here'
'Blood to blood I summon thee,
blood to blood return to me

Hell threw you from its inner core,
but earth won't hold you anymore,
since heaven cannot be your place,
your flesh and blood we now erase!

Nice!

I use google translate and use an icelandic translation which I then screw up to make it different. For example: Shield become Skoldjur or Skoldur (The google translate is Skjöldur)

The whole incantation I kinda play as Rule of Cool. When it seems appropriate, use a more theatrical version, sort of like the Slayer anime.

And here's a wish spell:

Source of magic, font of power
which flows in us all
Respond to my call and accept my sacrifice
With it that I may be granted
this wish of mine.

Here's a few more!

There is a shadow on the fray,
Which hides evil in the grey,
I now keep the night at bay,
By calling forth the Light of Day!

In reality's shadow you lurk,
And its rules you now shirk,
But now your plans are in the murk,
As your magic shall no longer work!

Now to the heavens cast your eyes,
See danger coming from the skies,
The young and old, the fools and wise,
In falling fire, everyone dies!

New year; new ideas?

I'm going to take a leaf out of Marius Castille's book and steal shamelessly from A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Creating or Summoning Undead or the Like
Now it is the time of night
That the graves, all gaping wide,
Every one lets forth his sprite,
In the church-way paths to glide

While we are on this path, I didn't see it. But I love to use the FFT spell chants for magic spells. For example when I cast time stop I call out: "Destiny lies in my hands! Stop movement! Time Stop!"

Mad Hatter used a couple in a recent Gotham episode:

Domination / Hypnotism:

Lock sense away
Awaken the rascal
When I say it is so
Your home is my castle

Fear

I haunt your dreams like a ghost
For I know what scares you most
So you run, run as fast as you can
There's no escape from the magic man

Haha, yes! That actor plays such an amazing Mad Hatter!

Coincidentally, I discovered him as "W Man" in Walking Dead the very same evening that, that episode of Gotham aired.

One could always dig up some old and classic Dr. Strange comics. Some of them get right up there with Lovecraft as far as scenery chewing verbiage.

10,000 browny points* to anyone who actually does this.

*:
Actually, we don't have any points (and they'd be worthless even if we did anyways). We do have the severed tongues of annoyingly talkative brownies though. I hear they make for great alternate material components for spells like hideous laughter or magic mouth.

* Grins wickedly *

Here's one I came up with for a spell I was reading recently from Horror Adventures called Massacre:
"Race toward your wretched end! Behold, the path to eternity! Massacre!"

I came up with one for Polar Midnight at one time, but I can't recall it.

By the way, I got thinking and realized that incantations work quite well for a Kineticist, perhaps even more so than for actual spellcasters, given that spells usually require Standard Actions but Kineticists can spend a full round or even two full rounds charging up a blast due to Gather Power.

An early post in the thread mentioning Tales of the Abyss made me realize something extremely situational but oh-so-perfect. For this to work, it requires a Magus using Spell Combat and Spellstrike with the Close Range Magus Arcana to cast Disintegrate through his weapon after making his full-attack. It's the "incantation" (though spoken during the attack) for Luke Fon Fabre's second Mystic Arte in Tales of the Abyss. "Arise, resound, and become the blade of destruction!" It kind of loses the impact without "Lost... Fon... Drive!" at the end, but Disintegrate after a full-attack is what Lost Fon Drive basically amounts to, even in-universe.
The Tales of franchise has some great incantations in it.

Hmm. I remember a couple from way back

Bolts of bedevilment
Round you now sweep
Fall you shall in
A Morphean sleep

By the Three who are Vishanti
Let me end this reign of fear
Hold back this force infernal
With a Nirvalonic sphere

and my favorite (had to look this one up)

The Emancipation Incantation:

Satannish, Watoomb and Raggadorr
Ikonn, the Seraphim and Cyttorak
Agamotto, Oshtur and Muniporr
Hoggoth, the Faltine, Valtorr and Denak!
Those whom I named plus other I've omitted
whose who threatened my cherished liberty
hark to this irrevocable decree:
such enslavement will not be permitted
your claims on my person I now reject
all demands of servitude I must deny
for your wisdom and might I've the utmost respect
but the price for its use is far too high
better the path I walk be mine alone
hear now these words: let my fate be my own!”’’

I made some for the Evil Eye witch hex:

AC: Let their body grow weak, let their guard be dropped, Let their defenses be broken, Let not a blow be blocked.

Attack: Let their blades be broken, Let their arrows be dulled, Let their eyes be blinded, Let their rage be lulled.

Saves: Let their minds be weakened, Let their bodies be sapped, Let their courage whither, Let their senses be trapped.

Ability Checks: Let their strength flee, Let their hands fumble, Let their minds forget, Let their will crumble
.

Skill Checks: Let their feet stumble, Let their knowledge be unknown, Let their presence die, Let their weakness be shown.

Three Rings For The Elven Kings

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

I've wanted to get a spellcaster powerful enough to cast Irresistable Dance for a while. For I have the perfect incantation:

"We can dance if we want to,
We can leave your friends behind,
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance,
Well, they're no friends of mine!"

Working on an archmage who uses these sorts of incantations. Here's what I've got:

Contagious Flames (also good for most any fire spell)
Though I hunger I am never sated. Through grass and ground I crawl, devouring all I behold. My blood knows the call, my flesh the craving. Nameless eidolons, thieves of Heaven’s grace, grant me endless flame.

Chain Lightning
Jupiter rises ascendant, and dwells in the house of the Archer. To your base forms I assign the crown, the blade, the throne, the eagle... and chain them with the thunderbolt!

Cloudkill + Quickened Black Tentacles
Hearken to me, you whispering and creeping things that dwell behind the glass! Listen outcast ones, banished ones, forgotten horrors scrabbling at the roots of creation! Open your hands! Send forth your breath!

Caustic Eruption
Porphatys, curse of traitors, eternal mire. By my lost blood I call on you. Contracts were made, debts incurred. My will is paramount, here and forever. Drown the world in your tears.

Teleport
Space is an illusion. Distance is a lie. By my will, I am where I am, and where I wish is where I shall now be!

Still looking for some really good Cone of Cold incantations.

Some gods are felled by toe's of mistle, but you're mortal so magic missile!

The OOTS route is just to say the spell as the incantation. I try to do this, but in other languages so it sounds cooler.

Fireball = Feuerball (German)
Mage Armor = Armadura do feiticeiro (Portguese)

I think we could do with seeing how they differ from class to class.

A good example is (Greater) Magic Weapon! I haven't given an example from every class that can cast the spell with a Verbal component, but I've done those ones that were distinct enough for me to have good ideas for them.

Antipaladin: The armoured figure's spear sweeps around and downwards, where it shudders as it seems to drink a shadow-bound fire from the pit itself as the voice reverberates through the tomb:
"FIENDS OF THE DEEP, FEED ME THY POWER!"

Arcanist: The erudite scholar reaches out and places her hands on the haft of her old friend's earth-breaker as her reedy voice mutters a strange eldritch formula:
"Tolle Vacuum Sine Attritu..."

Arrowsong Bard: The minstrel (clad in colourful gambeson and dashing grin, of course) tunes his bowstring while humming into it with perfect tenor vibrato, its length quivering as if in harmonious response:
"Bow of mine now won't you siing,
enemies thy pain to briiiiing..."
(Try to the tune of "When You Wish Upon A Star")

Bloodrager: The fierce warrior, golden eyes burning with fury at the hordes of goblins before her, thrusts her sword to the heavens with a mighty holler as she instinctively screams in Draconic:
"GILD MY BLADE!"

Cleric: Spinning and juggling her starknife in hand, she whirls it nightwards, and as it falls to her she reaches out with her butterfly ring, calling out in ringing Celestial:
"O' Beautiful Starsong, Let Thine Power Dance With Mine!"

Inquisitor: Glaring over the battlefield, the man with the iron mask stalks towards the fray, left hand tapping out a rhythmic pattern on the short blade in his right. His voice is low, but the chanting can just be heard:
"Occidere in Veritate
Occidere in Veritate
Occidere in Veritate"

Magus: She makes a swift and efficient arcane gesture with hand and rapier, speaking curtly:
"Pierce."

Paladin: The knight clad in gilded breastplate with gods above and steed below raises his sabre to the heavens, crying with all his soul:
"BY MY COURAGE!
FOR MY FRIENDS!
BEFORE MY FATE!"

Sorcerer: The shimmer-eyed being with the wild hair lashes out at thin air with their mace, yelling suddenly:
"Cruas Stàilinn agus Draoidheachd Ròn!"
(Hardness Steel and Magic Seal!)

Wizard: The tired-looking leader sits alone in her lamplit tent, spellbooks strewn around, cohort's hammer on her low table. She appears to be dreading something in the near future, but nonetheless she waves her wand and utters that well-practised incantation:
"Empower, Enchant,
Inflame and Imbue.
Arcanus Weaponum,
Do What You're Due."

That reminds me of Sir Orrin Neville-Smythe's final words before he slew the mighty dragon, Bryagh, with a single thrust of his flaming sword in the animated film, The Flight of Dragons.

Blade with whom I have lived,
Blade with whom I now die,
Serve right and justice one last time.
Seek one last heart of evil,
Still one last life of pain.
Cut well old friend--
Then...farewell.

Cone of Cold
Let the cold wind shatter their eyes, let the ice wind harden their blood, let the dark wind blacken their limbs. Hoary Jötnar of bygone ages, send forth the Fimbul-Wind!

Disintegrate (yay Visionaries!)
By nature's hand, by craft, by art, What once was one now fly apart!

Ice Crystal Teleport
Agathys! Tarterian Prison, inescapable, eternal! Know me as your warden, master of the keys! Grant me thy cold, that I might send this fool to your lightless abyss!

Hungry Pit
Writhing worms that gnaw at the roots of the tree of life, hear my words! I shatter the mirror, I lift the veil, I open the door to your hunger!

Battering Blast
As the Bull speaks to the Fly, as the Lion speaks to the Jackal, so I say to you -- Begone!

Quickened Disruptive Magic Missile
Imps of the Perverse, fly!

Quickened Hydraulic Push
Ceto, open your gate!

Oh that is very important. I don't imagine that all Clerics are so free-spirited, for instance. I was just trying to show that different classes really should have very different methods.

I really love your incantations, by the way!

So, here's a suggestion: what if the spell's level determined how long the incantation Time was?

Easy Mode: One line per level.
Hardcore Mode: One stanza per level.

Perhaps a line of incantation for each word that the spell uses, or something like that.

The problem with almost all of these incantations is that they'd turn most spells into a longer than a full round casting time.

What you really are looking for are incantations that would actually FIT within a standard combat phase... pretty much the ones used in the Harry Potter movies.

All of mine can be said in six seconds, which admittedly does assume that you start/finish saying them during your Move action if you take one. The exception is the Magus, who also has to full-attack, so I gave her one that can be used with one word.

Contributor

If you were to do this sort of thing, I think it would have to be X words or syllables per level, with 3 words a level being probably the maximum -- the longest incantation I've got up there is 36 words, which is probably about the upper limit for believable single-round statements.

Haikus are probably the best approach, variable-length haikus.
