How much should a live hyena cost in Katapesh?

Silver Crusade

Both untrained and trained.

A very fringe market, I know.

I would price them like a watch dog. 25 gp?

And don´t forget the muzzle. ;)

I'd equate it with a riding dog, sort of.
The untrained hyena is already more vicious than a normal dog, so its final trained cost should be higher.

If I were to make a judgement call, I'd price them at 100 gp (untrained) and 200 gp (trained) for simplicity's sake.

Silver Crusade

I'm leaning towards the more expensive riding dog costs right now, simply because they have a reputation as such nasty customers one has to be a certain kind of crazy to even try to train.

Possibly a bit more, just because of the risk involved.

I've got a gnoll PC looking to buy some. Go figure.

Hyena with owner

Untrained? The hyena would be as much a threat to the owner as to other people. I don´t think they would be more worth. 25 gp is a lot.

Okay, I wouldn't equate "untrained" with "not domesticated".
Think "house pet dog" against "police attack dog".

Otherwise, your gnoll PC might just as well go searching for a live hyena pup/kitten in the wilds and rear it himself.

‘A mature hyena is sold for one hundred and fifty thousand naira, but a cub is more expensive at two hundred and fifty thousand naira. This is because a cub can be trained. An adult baboon goes for fifteen thousand naira, a young one for eight thousand. A python goes for eight to ten, depending on the size.

150,000 naira is equivalent to 996.3 US Dollars (1 NGN = 0.006642 USD).

Figure out how much a US Dollar is worth in Katapeshi gold pieces, and you're set. http://www.d20source.com/2008/04/how-much-is-a-gold-piece-worth is a starting point for your work.

Mm. I might actually say cheaper, if only because of supply/demand... as I understand, there's a messton of gnolls and hyenas around Katapesh.

Granted, there's dangers in trying to bring one in alive, but still. With both of those factors, I'd probably take a note from previous posters, and say it would cost as much as a war dog. Perhaps a slight mark-up, it -is- Katapesh...

Based on that math it rounds up to 4 GP for the hyena which seems ridiculously low.

THIS is why Pathfinder needs a proper haggling system!

Aww, now I want a hyena!

Well since a trained guard/hunting dog is 25 GP, I reckon a trained Hyena is something like 40 GP. The hyena doesn't need to cost as mus\ch as a ridding dog due to the fact that it doesn't need to be bred with any specific physical traits, it's more a matter of training.

According to Animal Archive reference values are:

Hyena: 80 gp
Dire hyena: 250 gp
+50% if combat-trained (if GM allows it, and +50% is rule of thumb)

Of course a GM could set much lower or higher prices. A gnoll tribe with too many hyenas might sell you one for few gp, but in countries far from Katapesh the animals might be so exclusive that they cost way more.
