Druids, Spells and Headband of Inspired Wisdom

Rules Questions

Hey folks,

Me again.

Got another rules question and yes I did search the database this time:)

I've got a character who has 10 Wisdom and has decided to take a level of Druid (it fits his philosophy of life). Now he currently has 10 Wisdom (this is not the focus of the character obviously).

Now the Headband of Inspired Wisdom states in it's description the following:

This simple bronze headband is decorated with an intricate pattern of small green gemstones. The headband grants the wearer an enhancement bonus to Wisdom of +2, +4, or +6. Treat this as a temporary ability bonus for the first 24 hours the headband is worn.

Does this mean that after 24 hours the effect is permanent? Further does this make it possible for me to cast more and higher level spells?

Anything would be appreciated, but my GM in particular (and I for that matter) was hoping for a Paizo employee to take this one on.

Thanks in advance,

HH

Basically, once you've worn it for 24 hours, you can prepare your spells as though your wisdom is *x* higher.

Temporary bonuses such as owl's wisdom don't grant bonus spells *as stated in the description of that spell*, but permanent bonuses do. The difference between temporary and permanent is less than and more than 24 hours, respectively.

You can find the stuff about temporary and permanent bonuses on page 554 and 555 of the Core Rulebook to show to your dm.

"Permanent" in this case means that at that point, the increase to Wisdom grants you bonus spells and, indeed, allows you to CAST spells in this case (in your character's case, up to 2nd level spells, since your new Wisdom would be 12).

If you take the headband off, though, that bonus vanishes and your Wisdom drops back down to 10. You'll need to put the headband back on and wear it for another 24 hours for that bonus to become permanent again, and at that point let you prepare those bonus spells.

Well.. *up to 2nd level spells* meaning that if you had the ability from your class to cast 2nd level spells, then you'd be able to.

In your specific case, with just one level of druid, you'd be using the table there and the bonus spells from ability scores at the beginning of the book.

A level one druid with an effective 12 wisdom would cast three 0level spells, and one first level spell from table 3-7, and one additional first level spell from table 1-11 *ability modifiers*

Grand total:

three 0 level spells

two 1st level spells.

But be warned, a dispel magic that suppresses the effect will cause you to lose access to those spells, so think carefully before pursuing a class that you don't have the natural statistics to play.

You can always follow the philosophy without taking the class level.

Well, my guy is 6th and I plan on adding a point of Wisdom at 8th so that will help somewhat. Question though, if I am wearing this thing and I do get hit by a Dispel Magic, does that mean that the 24 hour waiting period for permanency kicks in after the Dispel wears off?

Yes, it wears off and you're screwed :-(. I really think the whole 24 hour thing is unwieldy and unrealistic beyond belief. Given the description of some of those items (belts, headbands, etcetera) wearing them...basically always...is practically impossible. Wanna sleep in what amounts to a crown? Want to ever take a bath? This really only works for the undead (lucky liches...).

I'd houserule it. Make it 8 hours to get 'permanent' bonuses, and you can take it off without losing that permanent status unless you put something else in that slot (or have the item off for say, 24 hours, or someone else uses it in the meantime). This is IMO a good compromise - you won't switch out items or share them with people because you'd lose the 'permanent' bonuses, but you can take it off to sleep or bathe or whatever without worrying.
