Lulu or Lightning Source - Which POD service do you prefer?

Product Discussion

Just wondering for you fan that support us 3PP with purchasing our Print On Demand (POD) books, which service to you like better; Lulu or Lightning Source; and why? Thanks for the info!

Grand Lodge

Check out Amazon's createspace.com as well.

Prices are a FRACTION of those other sites, which means less expensive for customers. The only problem I see is the page sizes do not include letter size.

You get an ISBN an can list in Amazon, and distributors as well.

Oh another "problem" is it is just paperback. So if you want hard covers they don't do it.

Krome

It is not an ISBN its a internal inventory number that masquerades as an ISBN, you cannot pick up and take the ISBN with you.

They have problems with sizing and they have problems with trimming as well, not to mention the trim size issues.

LPJr: I am still waiting on my priting proof from lighting source but thier pricing is sexy vs. LULU.com

lULU.com for its higher cost on color it does have good Quality and i have not had an issue with their service.

I'm interested to see what one of our books looks like through Lightning Source (via the DriveThruRPG/OBS print-on-demand set up). I'm not happy that the sizing is slightly smaller than standard (8.25 x 11 rather than 8.5 by 11), because that means possibly having to reformat and redo layouts on existing files. Also, they don't have all the options that Lulu has. Their prices are nice, though.

But we've always had good products from Lulu, and they almost always get our books to us several days earlier than predicted, which is nice. They may be more expensive, but so far, I think it's worth it.

We haven't used Lulu but we have used Lightning Source for our last few Call of Cthulhu books. Generally I've been happy with LS, although be careful with your artwork. Line art looks awesome, shaded greyscale artwork not so much. We had some Aaron Acevedo art that looks awesome in color, looks OK in B&W, and looks like a solid black square on the books we got from LS.

Hyrum.

Interesting.

As a customer, Lulu worked Ok for me, MOST of the time.

In fact the problems happened when I ordered multiple PODs at once, and then I somtimes got weird results : when I ordered the "Great City" series from 0one games, I got three different modules with the same cover.

And their customer service in India is crap. Unable to answer any queries past vague generic answers. Damn Globalization.

But when I re-ordered the products one by one, I got the correct version.

Go figure.

OTOH, I was not even aware there were competitors.

Scarab Sages

I have bought abour 10-12 books from lulu. 2 of them were off alignment (about a 1/4" too high) and one was titled on the cover. Neither of these were messed up enough to qualify for a reprint. #sigh
The other books I have liked and have been really nice looking.

I've also used blurb. (2 books, good quality)

I'll check into createspace...
