Team Fortress 2

Video Games

Silver Crusade

Years later and this is still like multiplayer manna from heaven to me. If anything the game has only become more fun(and funny) with the passage of time and upgrades. I really do think it's in Diablo 2 territory as far as lasting appeal and its ability to pull one back in.

So, who here still answers the call to fight for RED and/or BLU? What classes have you gravitated towards?

I've really been sticking to Scout and Demoman lately, especially now that I've finally grown comfortable with the Demo's style(and the fact that I still need to unlock his sword). I think the big appeal of these two is that they amuse me so much; that and the fact that Scouts can so easily enrage the opposing team. Valve could have named the class Troll and it would have been equally fitting.

I'm making myself actually play my least-used class, Sniper, now that I have the Huntsman bow. I hate to say it, but I've never quite had the patience(and honestly, the aim) to play Sniper properly, certainly not like the guys(read: bastards) who can headshot a Scout in mid-air. Still quite fragile, but he's been proving fun to take into the fray along side the rest of the team rather than hanging back, playing Spy-bait.

Anything to avoid getting drawn into those still-all-too-common sniper duels on 2Fort. Cripes.

Because I didn't have much of a snese of restraint, Scout and Heavy Weapons Guy have actually turned up in the Curse of the Crimson Throne game I'm running, as NPC follower candidates(a scrappy punk from Old Korvosa who always carries a truncheon and a dwarven refugee from Irrisen blessed with a questionable mastery of the Common language and an overly cared for axe named "Sasha"). I was surprised and amused that the party's fighter actually hired them.

Sovereign Court

I don't really care about colours. I usually just go to the team that needs extra players. As for classes I've always loved the pyro or the medic. The Pyro is pretty fast, sort of well armored, and devastating at close range. The medic is also fast but without the retro virus he's not as useful for solo flag runs, but get him in a group and he becomes very popular!

The only class I don't use much is the spy. I'm not a big fan.

The Exchange

I usually play engineer, pyro, soldier, demoman, or pyro. I don't like playing spy or sniper.

I love playing the massive games 16 vs. 16, really keeps one on their toes.

The game sucks in my country.

Seriously. Those a$$$@~~s did the "let's treat the Germans like frikking three-year-olds because their politicians are brain-dead lickspittles" again - and you cannot get around it.

At least it didn't work correctly at the time I lost the last of my interest. Maybe I'll look whether they have found a work-around for that bullcrap.

When I play a shooter, I wanna see the blood. Not because I'm bloodthirsty (I mean, yes, I *am* bloodthirsty, but that has nothing to do with this), but because I'm not a four-year-old any more (being a German means that your government thinks you cannot be shown violence - but they're okay with the media flooding you with genitals and sexual intercourse.).

And in this game, it puts you at a disadvantage - since you cannot tell the difference between an actual team member and a disguised spy - neither of them bleed in the German version.

Stupid f***s.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I used to play, and if I ever get around to fix internet for my desktop again I'll probably play again.

I usually play Pyro and Medic, with the occational Scout. I've never liked to snipe in any shooter. My fighting style is more in your face, up close and personal.

I remember hearing about this. It's either been fixed officially(I think) or there's an unofficial patch that won't bar you from VAC-secured servers that'll fix the blood.

Germany always gets hit hard by that. Hell, you can see it in action in the Meet the Soldier video, just by switching between the German option and everything else at the end of the video. The guy's head is off, but it's okay because, you know, it's not red. Wha?

Yeah, I looked around, and there seems to be a decent (but still unofficial) way to get around this nonsense.

It's about as retarded as the USA and their mortal fear of boobies (OMFG! HOT COFFEE LETS YOU SEE BADLY PIXELATED BOOBIES AND SEX! MY KID IS GOING TO HELL! I THOUGH HE WAS ENGAGING IN SOME INNOCENT FUN WHERE HE WALKS AROUND A CITY STEALING CARS AND KILLING PEOPLE WITH VIRTUALLY NO CONSEQUENCES AND NOW THIS!!!!1!)

Personally I'd prefer if it was the other way around: I like violent video games but I'd prefer if I had more adult themed stories. Not porn mind you but more romance and relationships. I loved Mass Effect for that reason.

I've been playing Team Fortress since "TF Quake" and the little known "TF Heretic II". (Which was an awesome Heretic II mod.) I really miss my EMP grenades from "TF Quake" and "TF Classic". I didn't bother much with "Unreal Fortress" as I hated it, and I spent quite a bit of time playing "Tribes" which had a very similar theme IMO, using armor size to determine class... eventually also having a few Fortress-style mods.

I have pretty much kept the same favorite classes even through all the changes over the years/versions... Engineer & Heavy Weapons Guy. I can play pretty much anything, but not GOOD at everything by a long shot. More recently I have been enjoying Pyro, Soldier & Scout. I still don't care for Sniper & Spy all that much, Medic just seems boring and I'm glad to have teammates who enjoy the class. (Much like a Defender in CoH, bleh.)

Team/Color has never been a deciding factor unless my friends are all on a specific side. In pickup games I usually just join a team and try to fill in the holes as best I can.

EDIT: Kaeyoss, you forgot the part where you pickup the prostitute, have alledged car sex with her and beat her to death immediately afterwards so you can get your $25 back.

I love playing sniper and spy.

I remember one LAN party where I pretty much closed down the enemy base. If the game were more realistic, our team could have walked up to the upper story using all those headless corpses as a ramp.

And spy? Nothing more enjoyable in the game than to put the enemy team in Total Paranoia Mode. :D

I remember THF (The Heretic Fortress), I think I played it shortly. It was mostly TFC for me, with a bet genuine TF in the beginning.

I never played Tribes, but I did play Tribes II and Tribes: Vengeance.

Those were the days. If you were getting heavy armour and didn't get a ride, you had to walk to the enemy base. For about five minutes because the battlefields were so huge.

I also remember one really great T2 mod where you could install forcefields. Had a lot of cool stuff.

It might be in T2 (Diamond Sword!) or UT, but Blue/Red? Pffd.

Yeah, they should make a game where that is the goal and everything is shown in detail. It would be outlawed everywhere. :D

I miss Heretic Fortress, not enough of a following, which is probably more Heretic II's fault than anything. Sleeper game.

Heavy Armors could ski down slopes, when they were available. :)

The mod with the forced fields, tripmines and landmines was basically a Fortress mod, tons of fun! You could also build dispensers and teleporters much like TF. I think it had pop-up turrets too, been a LONG time!

LOL, That's the "Hot Coffee" HACK/CRACK for GTA:San Andreas... unlocks hidden games (stamina building games, lol) that the programmers weren't smart enough to remove from the final press, silly Rockstar pervs. I think they claimed it was a HACK(not their software/programming), despite the "hacker" showing the media it was just a matter of accessing hidden portions of the game disc.

Daniel Moyer wrote:

Nah, that was only some vestiges. A few add-ons. And, from what I heard (haven't played any GTA game), not very graphic.

Sure, some brain-dead idiots cried for public execution for the devils who let their kids see this, but those don't count.

I mean HD graphics. I want to use Splinter Cell equipment to put this telescopic camera Sam has to some unintended, perverted uses. I want a game that makes Penis of the Caribbean* look like an appeal to abstinence and Hostel and Texas Chainsaw Massacre like anti-violence peace films. And then I blackmail the world and demand copious amounts of cash and power or I'll release that.

That would make me way more awesome than the last Bond villain (though that's not really a big achievement.)

*As weird as this sounds, this isn't an actual porno flick. The porn crowd seems to have slacked off with cheesy names. I think I'll have to offer my services as a titular consultant.

Man, I was a big time Tribes player (just the first one), big time player of the Defend and Destroy ones. My group had lots of practice scrimmages with this one group and it was a nightmare watching on the heads up radar screen and seeing two or three heavies moving towards your base at rapid speed. Those guys knew their ski routes and had heavies flying in. Biggest defense was dropping lots of mortars and grenades to keep them out. Those were the days.

One fun mod had disposable rocket turrets and laser turrets, it was fun to remotely control them and just nailing the heck out of the lights who stay in the air too long. All this was in the first tribes game as mods. One friend tried modding so that you could put up full structures, but that was a bit harder to implement in the first tribes game engine.

Sam & Max fans who are also TF2 fans, take note! There's a little special going on this week with the new S&M game. A very unexpected and bizarre special.

I played way too much of that on the Renegades mod. And by way too much, I really do mean way too much. Plastique explosives!

Stealing the other team's bikes(and taking up their vehicle count) and hiding them in far-off corners of the map never got old.

Engineer update is here!

Interesting stuff, mini sentry guns, the wrangler, frontier justice, etc.

What does everyone who plays the game think of the update?

For anyone with a Mac, a Snow Leopard graphics patch has been released by Apple to address issues with this game:

So. Much. Hate.

It's actually driven me into Pyro Spy-check rage a couple of times now. The people that are really adept at playing spies are only going to become Nightmares Who Walk As Men because of this thing. All the more reason to burn them.

Burn them all.

Burn them forever.

Also, that strategy rarely seems to fail.

And as long as we're sharing our preferred poisons in playstyle:

W+M2

Not claiming I'm at that point by any means, but hot damn that is an ideal to strive for.

Steam username is Gunsmoke1084. I play in spurts when I need to detox from work. I think Carmageddon does a better job though, much more violent, pedestrians for points! lol

Degreaser+Axetinguisher for pyro is fun, too.

I think my kill and point records are with pyro. Well, pyro's second, my record is with engineer, but that was just because I managed to put a sentry on what seemed to be the perfect spot. For some reason, people queued up to be shot to pieces. Weird. Must have been Lemming Day or something.

Ya, if you can find that key time and place as Engi people just run out and die. Combination of fatigue, bad class choices, and position.

I like the Sydney Sleep. I'm to a horrible sniper but I seem to have problems getting headshots, so it plays to my strengt of almost always hitting with bodyshots. Its also fun clipping a heavy with it while a friendly Pyro is dancing around him.

I really like the new Gloves of Running Urgently (sounds like a magic item) as it gets me faster to the front when people aren't playing Engie or the dumb scout takes the only level 1 teleport. D:

Teleporter priorty (if the class above you needs it you get out of the way)
- Engi
- Heavy (and his medic)
- Soldier/Demoman/Medic
- Spy
- Scout
- Sniper

I can relate, was playing this one map, orange x2(3?) and the center point, oh my goodness, it was crazy. Engie is my best in scores by a looong shot, followed by soldier. Pyro... I try to be skillful with him, but sometimes I just have to charge into that mix of enemies just to buy time for my team or triggering their invuln early and using the airblast to push them back for as long as possible. Suicide? Yes, but it's for the greater good... ;-)

Silver Crusade

Much sympathy to all the guys with Engineers throwing their averages off. I've just about given up hope of getting the most kills with any other class after I spent a night as Engineer on a Lazytown map in an endless stalemate. I'd love to get a class closer to my heart over that kill count, but damn. I don't think I can manage 39 kills with a Scout or Pyro in one life...

And as much as I love Demoman, my chances of getting to that point with him are nil.

Dorje Sylas wrote:

It's another Soviet acronym pun for the Russian Heavy, like the Killing Gloves of Boxing. :D

Dorje Sylas wrote:

Augh, I can't stand that. Both level 1 teleports at your team's spawn(I will switch to Engie temporarily JUST to bring them up to level 3) and Scouts using them. I love playing Scout, but I always skip the teleports and take the long way around unless we have like three telepads up and running. Scout's fast, he can stand to run a bit.

The worst is when people build the teleporter entry and exit like three metres apart. Doesn't make any sense.

The Exchange

KaeYoss wrote:

Sometimes they're just doing the teleporter padding for their stats/scores... or if from the engineer's update, they built both, building up the teleporters with the plan of moving the exit closer to the battle after the teles are level 3's. Or... that was the battle front earlier and they forgot to push it up, though if its that close, why the heck did they bother with the teleporter? *sigh*

As for the GRU, yeah, as Mikaze has mentioned it's a russian acronym for the military intelligence office, who also control spetznaz units (very scary).

Whited Sepulcher wrote:

There's always that, though that still makes them jerks, because people will walk into their trap.

If they want to pad their stats that way, let them open a different game and do it by themselves (or won't that count for the achievement etc.?)

Whited Sepulcher wrote:

I'd say it makes more sense to build the entry, beat it up to level 3, and then build the exit where you need it. Or build it and move it immediately. But they just let them sit there forever.

This reminds me of jerks in Battlefield 2142 who want to get the "tropies" (not called trophies, don't remember what kind of reward it was) you get when you get X minutes in an aircraft.

Those a$$%!@!~s would take the transporter and fly it somewhere out of the way. And then you'd spawn inside the thing, and be lightyears away from the action.

Dark Archive

The game is still a lot fun, but only if there's competent players. I can't stand incompetent players like medics only healing one guy outside the fight, or engies building EVERYTHING in base and carrying outside (far too slow and vulnerable), or spies who can't resist sapping a teleporter I setup on purpose as early spy detectors.

The economy of the game is starting to hurt it a bit, but it's overall still balanced fairly well for casual play.

Silver Crusade

Finally started to use the Scottish Resistance.

I'm falling in love with Demoman all over again.

Still don't have a damn Eyelander.

Now that's nasty.

I'm not playing right now. I wanted to get Black Ops, got pissed about the censure crap they pulled off with that one here in Germany, and got Battlefield: Bad Company 2 instead (which was a lot cheaper, and has vehicles for added agitation! I managed to max out the last kit earlier today and now only need a couple of promotions to get everything.)

It's also really annoying to see newbies do really stupid things like medics seeing an enemy and start attacking instead of trusting the healed character to take care of it.

Or heavies and pyros don't just spam everywhere when a dispenser is right next to them to check for spies.

Or my single biggest peeve. Engies who insist building at spawn, and then carrying everything up to the front lines and then dying.

Or the ever popular 4 sniper/4 spy team and people wondering why we lost.

Even on my normal servers filled with good players, we're getting outnumbered by newbies.

Sovereign Court

Medics can dish out some serious damage. Against one of the power classes their best bet is to team up, but if you spot a lone scout, engie, or spy it's sometimes best to just pull out the needle gun and take them out yourself. Medics that only heal are still useful but the pros know when to switch to offense.

A good scout easily owns every other class in the game except for heavy with Natascha 1v1 in a reasonable area (like not Turbine tunnels duh).

Of course it depends on the situation, but there's plenty of people who sees an enemy, and just stops healing. And usually they don't heal other people at all of course.

The real newbies don't have Butsauger, so that doesn't help them at all.

The sexy-spray distraction spies have really been racking up the kills with this influx of new players. :D

I used to love the Butsauger, but now I think I prefer the full 4 points of regeneration. Most of my shooting as a medic is usually done running away or taking out those forward engies, or those jerk spies who stab my power class.

Scouts are like any class: in the right spot they are nasty but on the wrong terrain they're screwed. choke points and corridors for example. Splash damage usually shuts them down. Also doesn't matter how good you are, with a max of 150 health (with the milkman set) all it usually takes is one lucky shot. Even n00bs get those :P

The only thing I was trying to point out though was a medic that only heals (the one person) probably isn't that much better then a medic that's always shooting in terms of skill. In terms of usefulness there's no doubt that a medic that's only shooting is only slightly more useful then an engineer that never builds or a spy that never cloaks or disguises :D

I got really good at the game after about 2 weeks when the game first came out. It's a fun game that has plenty of skill factors that should not be ignored. Random crits are really annoying, but ultimately I think I prefer them since the game just isn't balanced for ultra-serious play (especially with all these weapons now).

The pro vs. pub series has shown this game is not suitable for ultra-serious play. But since I'm not at that level, it doesn't bother me.

It bothers me when people do really stupid things over and over and over again. Like not watching their backs for spies when there are not enemies around. Like healing only 1 person ever. Like shooting at a sentry gun with a heavy at maximum range. Like pyros not spamming when there's a dispenser around. After 4 years it's more than annoying. Even on my home server with good players.

Finally...it's time to Meet the Pyro.

So I got back into TF2 after about a 6 month hiatus, anyone else from these here boards still fighting the good fight and killing those dirty REDs?

Steam name is the same as this one if anyone wants to hit me up.

Also, anyone else frequent the official TF2 forums?

Pyro threads there are like Rogue threads here, and Spy is like Monk. I got here and felt right at home.

Im still playing, although i only ever really play on a 24/7 5gorge server. As far as teams i always hit random.

Classes i play most would be soldier, medic, and demo with the loch n load, chargin targe and caber because the caber is the manliest weapon ever. Nothing better than ambushing a group of 3 or so people and bonking them with handheld explosives.
