Mounted Gnome Paladin Build

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi, I'm new to the forums and Pathfinder in general, but I recently joined a game of Xcrawl and my barbarian just got killed so I'm attempting to create a Gnome Paladin. It's a 15 point buy, 3000 starting gold, and I'm coming in at level 4.

Str: 12
Dex: 16
Con: 14
Int: 10
Wis: 7
Cha: 16

Ride: 4 ranks (class skill)
Use Magic Device: 4 ranks

Mounted Combat
Ride-by-Attack - Does this let me move through an opponent's square or do I have to charge along his side?

+1 Breastplate (1200 gold)
+1 Heavy Steel Shied (1020 gold)
Wand of Mount (750 gold)
Small Long Sword (15 gold)
Small Lance (10 gold) - Can anybody tell me if the multiplier to damage from this weapon for being mounted applies to the strength modifier as well as base damage?

I don't know whether this is good formatting or not but these are all the chargen decisions I've made. The game I'm in is pretty deadly so I've been trying to focus on my defense a bit. Any advice?

You don't charge through the enemies square- that would be an Overrun; you ride alongside the enemy for ride-by-attack. The nicest part of ride-by-attacking is the enemy is rarely if ever in a position to full attack you.

Wand of Mount; cheaper to buy a warhorse surely? And the wand charge only gives you an hour of mount so for out of combat travelling it will be used up in a week.

On lance charges, yes the strength modifier is also doubled- so 2d8+2 in your case. But looking at your OP, I must be clear; the extra damage is only on charges.

The reason I need the wand is because of the play style of Xcrawl. Xcrawl uses pathfinder rules with a few new ones tacked on. The background is that it's set in modern times as if all of the DnD stuff existed and an Age of Adventure that was normal pathfinder existed around the middle ages. Xcrawl is a gameshow based on DnD that professional adventureres participate in for fame and prizes, and it's strictly a dungeon crawl. I can't bring an animal into the Game so I need access to summons, plus I plan on having to leave behind my summoned pony upon occassion with a need to summon a new one. For out of combat travelling I fully plan on using a car.

Fascinating.

The charging with a lance doubles all damage that is not expressed as bonus dice. It will double smite, strength, enhancement bonuses, etc. It won't double flaming 1d6, or anything like that.

With 15 Points I'd:

Str: 14 (10)
Int: 7 (gain 4)
Wis: 7 (gain 4)
Dex: 10 (0)
Con: 12
Chr: 19 (13) +1 (Level) = 20

Same equip; are you not a party/ can you have someone else create the mount for you? 15 points is rough, you need to garner out the extra from Int (1 skill point buys you 4 points; even if you weren't to dumb that I'd prefer the save bonus to the skill point; but by dumping Wis and buying 20 Cha you've gotten +5 on your saves; and every Cha bonus yields an extra 2d6 Swift-action healing (which compensates for the lowered Con). Your AC will be 22 even without a Dex bonus (Full Plate, Shield, Size); don't worry so much about skill penalties (you can buy the skill focus eventually if you're having difficulty, but the ride rolls are relatively easy, think long term).

Aside from that looks generally good... buy Full Plate (no +1 Breastplate). If you have to Wand of Mount, hand it off if you're in a party; or just wait till 5 (fight on the ground for a level); or hound the GM into allowing a pet dog into the dungeon so you can use class features (most GMs want to encourage diverse builds).

I'm concerned with taking full-plate because of the Armor check penalties and the weight. Every point lower on Ride checks is one less equivalent AC for my squishy mount (with Mounted Combat feat). Your change in build suggestion would have me at a mere +1 to ride checks compared to my current +6, meaning I would have a difficult time making the 10 DC check to attack with my mount and would have to drop my shield 1 out of every 5 charges when I couldn't make the DC 5 check to guide my mount with my knees. I plan on getting a raptor as a mount upon hitting 5th level so I really want to be able to make those DC 10 checks regularly for max damage output, especially after reaching 7th level and gaining pounce. Also, because the mount I want is a small, strength 13 biped at level 5, I have to be extremely careful about my weight distribution, and full plate is a full 10 pounds heavier than a breastplate. I currently have AC 24 so I'm rather happy with the way my breastplate is working out in terms of defensive capability. I may just drop my int and my hp for the Cha increase as you suggest, although I might just drop it to 8 so I can still have the option of using my wand without having to rely on a party member. I'm extremely pressed for feats at the moment so I really don't want to waste one on Skill Focus when I can have an equivalent riding skill by moving my points around a bit and wearing lighter armor.
