Help With Thistletop Wrapup (Spoilers) BoTCH Players Stay OUT!

Rise of the Runelords

OK, so at our last session, the players killed Nualia and Mafeshnikor before we had to stop for the night.

So, they basically have the Shadow room and the Crab treasure room left to explore next week. Kind of Anti-Climactic after finishing the two main baddies in the adventure.

I'd like this to be more than just a 2-room kill and loot wrapup but don't want to include too much more info on what is happening next.

Any suggestions on what to add to the last 2 rooms to make it a more interesting end to Burnt Offerings.

(They've already completely killed everything else in Thistletop except the Bunyip.)

Spoiler:
Perhaps not as big as Nualia and Malfeshnekor, but an interesting addition might be a group of Skinsaw Cultists. We know that Xanesha had some contact with Nulia during her five years between the fire and the raid. It's possible that Xanesha sent a group of cultists to bolster her ranks and possibly retrieve something of Karzoug's presumed lost in the statue (maybe something in the treasury).

That is what I did in my game and it worked beautifully. This helps foreshadow Chapter 2 a bit as well, giving the PCs something to think about as things progress.

That is such a good idea....

thanks

Playing tag with shadows could be fun if they have the higher initiative.

It may still turn out anti-climactic for your group with just the crab, but in my game, the crab was a near TPK. Everything else was the cake walk.

They've already fought a crab once. The Paladin, after a night trying to romance Ameiko (actually romance, not seduce) decided to meditate and sleep on the beach. This was after the party ate a Reefclaw Claw at the Hagfish and had heard tories about the things in the bay.

Well, after taking off his armor and going to sleep under the moon, a crab (which was later named Clackerclaws by the one Sandpoint Resident PC) attacked.

It was pretty hairy for a while, but he escaped to the town and the party rallied and killed the crab. (then they cooked it and ate it...)

But shadow tag could be fun. I just wanted something thematic for the game. But skinsaw cultists and an Ancient Azlantian Crab might be interesting.

Well, we finished BO last night (took 14 weeks) and I used the cultists as my extra encounter. (The heroes just know they are cultists, not for whom).

With only 3 room left to explore, I expected this to be a quick night.

The shadows were first, and they did a number on the PCs. (The party Paladin was not there. The player didnt show up and he doesn't like his character to participate if hes not there so Skillum was "recovering from his wounds battling Mafeshnikkies"). All but one of the 5 remaining characters took serious ST damage.
After that, they decided (as the party ahd not rested since assaulting the hedge maze) that it was time to retreat to the upper levels and sleep. (They were mostly out of spells and healing and daily abilities.)

So, they retreated to Nualia and Lyrie's rooms, set up watch, and got ready to sleep. (The party spared Lyrie's life and she was sitting manacled in the corner of Nualia's bedroom.

On first watch, the cultists, who had been living in the room past the shadow room (I turned the crab room into 2 rooms, 1 with water, 1 without). When they discovered what had happened, the 5 cultists headed up to investigate. They were supposed to catch the party unawares, but three things happened.

I randomly rolled and they attacked on first watch.

As it was first watch, only 2 characters were asleep.

The cultists Critically Fumbled the stealth check.

So, the party was not caught by surprise (even though two were still sleeping) and there was a battle royale in the hall and bedrooms.

Lyrie compounded the matter by trying to garrote Jakk the SPellblade Rogue from behind while he was fighting.

In the end, the cultists were slain (after doing considerable damage to the party) and then Jakk decided to put on one of the masks to disguise himself.

After some nasty visions of violence and a failed save, he took the permenant attribute damage. It was then (finally) decided that the party should stop equipping gear that detected as evil...

In the cultist's room, they found some cryptic notes with hints about what's to come...

BTW- this was a nasty adventure for Jakk, in total, between the Glassworks and Thistletop, he's taken 35 points of attribute damage.

The crab turned out to be a quick and easy fight the next morning, and they decided to haul the helmet up to the surface. (with a number of crazy ideas including enlarging the halforc, putting the helmet on his head, and then reduce personing him to let him wear the helpm out.)

But before they left, they wanted to see what was in the Holing Hole.

Jakk volunteered to be lowered down on a rope...

He failed the Fear check from then howl, dropped his sword, and got bit by the bunyip.

The party spent the next hour attempting various ways to "fish" for the bunyip, including makeshift fishing lines with hooks made from assoorted goblin weapons and hgoblin torsos as bait, using the masterwork Manacles as a leader to keep the bunyip from biting through the rope, and more.

Eventually, the party climbed down to the base (well, 2 climbed, 3 failed the DC5 climb check and had to be Feather Falled to the ground) where they fianlly lured the creatuere out and shot it with arrows while the mage's Celestial Dolphin fought as well.

Finally, they got everything else from the Island and, after making her promise to do good, released Lyrie to go off on her own...

Of course, there is no chance She will show up again in Magnimar...

It was a weird and silly ending, but they had a god time.

Next week, a side quest (3 characters still need to level up to L4) and then, Skinsaw Murders....
