Dedication bonuses replaced capstones. If one slots only abilities related to a single "role" (no classes per se in PFO), one gets a bonus of some sort, intended to offset the hybrid-bonus multi-classing so often brings.

Goblin Squad Member

For reference.

So we got a chance to pitch this to the team today and everyone seems to like it, so we're now putting it up here for feedback :) . This is based pretty heavily on some of the the earlier suggestions from DarkLightHitomi and GrumpyMel.

The main thing we want to achieve with this system remains keeping optimized multi-role builds from being far more desirable than single-role builds. This keeps the role feeling more special/distinct, and also doesn't penalize players that don't really pay much attention to optimization from feeling outclassed by others that do (e.g., we don't want to see "You're just a pure Fighter? No, I think we'll hold out for a Fighter/Barbarian/Rogue or a Fighter/Paladin/Ranger for our melee character.").

We've heard and agree with all your arguments about how a carrot at the end of the progression doesn't really achieve this, and that you don't want to be locked out of getting a capstone.

So what we're proposing now is the idea of a "Dedication" or "Focus" bonus.

Essentially, whenever you only have feats from one role slotted (rounded out with generic feats that aren't role-specific), you'll gain a bonus to doing what that role is supposed to do. This bonus is pegged to making the pure build competitive with the best synergistic multi-role build, may shift over time as new synergies are discovered, and may scale up in power based on your level (becoming similar in power to tabletop's Capstone at 20th level if high-level synergies are really powerful).

For example, if we decide that Paladins are supposed to be the best in the game at melee damage vs. evil targets, but testing determines that there's a synergistic Paladin/Ranger/Fighter build that does better without losing any real effectiveness in other areas, we may tweak the Paladin Dedication bonus to increase Smite Evil damage. This gives us the ability to shore up specific corner-case issues without having to rebalance the feats of a whole role (which may propagate out to cause further issues).

Your bonus is entirely dependent on what you have slotted, not what you know. If you build a Fighter 5/Barbarian 5, you get the Fighter bonus if you only slot Fighter feats, the Barbarian bonus if you only slot Barbarian feats, and no bonus while you slot feats from both (or neither) roles. And there may remain situations where you prefer the synergy of two or more roles to whatever the individual bonus is. If we scale the bonus in power by level, it will likely be based on the highest-tier feat you have slotted.

Thoughts?

You are correct. Paladins will not be in the first part of EE. As a result those of us who want to play paladins have three choices. The first is to spend XP on the released skills, then when the paladin comes out start training paladin skills. For this i think some fighter and cleric mix should give the needed stats/skills to make the easiest transition into a paladin.

The second choice is to start the character but dont spend any XP, and when paladin comes out dump all the XP into that role.

The third choice is to play as normal and when twins are released set the twin up as a paladin.

Ultimately from an RP point of view any of those options can work well. It just depends on what your personal goals are. I will say that if someone decides to pick the second choice, they will burden their company and whatever settlement they decide to be a part of.

I am leaning towards having my paladin be the twin and waiting until paladins are released before playing that character. Until then my main will likely be either a fighter or a cleric, but who knows.

Goblin Squad Member

As we've yet to see much about skills, abilities, and merit badges from a "planning" stand-point, remember also the speculation that there may be plenty of "good for most characters" things to spend XP on as well. Supposedly everything one buys increases characteristics, so there may be plenty of "prep" available even before one can begin building a Paladin in earnest.

Goblin Squad Member

yeah, the paladin coming in late is a bit of a setback for our settlement, but we are hoping the Fighter/Cleric route is a relatively painless process to then go into Paladin. Which some "good for most" abilities transfer, since I believe(correct me if I am wrong) storing up XP caps out at 3 months xp? memory kind of fuzzy on that, could be 6 or 9?

speaking for myself, I am mostly going the LN crafter with LN gathering destiny twin to help support the walking tin cans of the settlement.

Goblin Squad Member

I'm not sure we've got a firm figure on saving XP, but if there is one, our Call Nihimon spell will find us the answer.

Goblin Squad Member

I thought i read it somewhere but cant find it. It just may have been an early concept thing thats TBD

-scrawls a the circle of Nihimon on the floor and begins the ritual of guidance-

side note - any LG, LN, or NG crafter, gatherer, or trader free agents out there looking for a home?

Goblin Squad Member

Right now, I'm planning on being a Cleric of Iomedae. And we will see what happens down the line.

Goblin Squad Member

Paladin will probably be the 1st class added to the core 4. 90% of it is fighter and cleric.

Exactly. If you train in weapons, armor, some fighting feats, turning undead (channel positive energy) and a dash of divine spellcasting, you pretty much have a paladin minus the smite evil, lay on hands and the mount or special weapon.

If my compatriots don't abandon their real lives in pursuit of PFO glory soon, I may be forced to abandon them. What are you looking for, exactly?

Caldeathe, generally we're looking for people with two qualities: 1) pro-social people who can work well with others towards shared goals (which likely a lot of settlements want), and 2) People who are jazzed up about being part of a LG settlement (which looks like it will be a rare/ringular thing in EE). So LN or NG characters who see the value in a full-on LG community would be very much appreciated.

I intend to play my primary as a LG Cleric, and am always interested in diplomacy, so you may hear more from me before the landrushdust is settled.

My interactions with Ozems Vigil have been nothing but positive! I look forward to trading, chatting and laughing with them! :)

Goblin Squad Member

I would like to say that if someone is interested in the Vigil as a community, but they dont necessarily want to join one of the companies, you are still welcome to join the settlement as a free agent or start your own company and join that way.

Not only that but if you just want to hang and just chill there is no reason you cant do that also.

Its going to be awesome, thats not an opinion its a fact.

Yay, me too. I want to be a LG Cleric of Iomedae. You'd fit in great in our settlement. You can join as a free agent if you like. Vote here for the settlement & click 'Apply to Settle' and choose Settlement level to join as just a free agent.

I will second Potato's comments. These people are super. They have been nothing but friendly, fun, and open to interactions with players outside their own group. All the way around, a truly stellar bunch.

Goblin Squad Member

Love me some metal. Tell me, will you all have a pub or tavern... and if so, what will it be called?

Goblin Squad Member

As far as I know, no formal talk of a tavern have been set forth.
It was mentioned a couple times, but the focus of getting a settlement and making sure it has a working structure and economy to ensure stability has been the focus of the recent talks.
If a charter company or group of settlers are willing to set up a Tavern POI with Ozem's Vigil, I do not foresee anyone being against the idea provided it is within the 1 step alignment shift game mechanic allowed in PFO (LG, LN, NG)

Anyone willing to pursue such intrests I would recomend sending a PM to either Mbando or Quietus (they are much more savvy when it comes to talking to people)

hopefully they don't get too mad at me for putting them on the spot :)

Goblin Squad Member

Is a Lawful Good tavern a contradiction in terms? ;-)

Goblin Squad Member

It may be, but then you know most of the patrons will pay off their bar tabs ;)

though a NG tavern would prob be an easier sell

Goblin Squad Member

Hey everyone! I will be on vacation starting Thursday and will be gone for two weeks. Any diplomatic relations should be forwarded to Quietus. Meanwhile, I have a flight to Florida with my name on it.

Ozem's Vigil is excited and honored to announce our third company, Fidelis, in joining our settlement! We are very happy to be working with some great people toward a common goal. That goal being a Lawful Good settlement that focuses on crafting, defense and eventually a Paladin training ground.

Fidelis is striking out on their own looking for a place to call home. Ozem's Vigil is a community open to those who want a home in a Lawful Good settlement. It was a natural fit.

Fidelis will have equal representation along with Peace Through Vigilance and Full Metal Syndicate within the Settlement. Together our three communities will work together to make the settlement not only a solid bastion of light, but a thriving industry based upon the principles of their respective Lawful Good deities.

We are still actively looking for other companies and free agents who want to be part of a LG community to join our cause.

Greetings to all our friends and supporters!

It is with enthusiasm and great pleasure that I announce that the company Fidelis will henceforth be joined with the good folk of the settlement Ozem’s Vigil. In order to better realize our mission within the River Kingdoms, our fellowship has pledged its service to this worthy enterprise. We anticipate joining our brothers and sisters of Full Metal Syndicate and Peace Through Vigilance in this exciting new venture.

Due to our new obligations, Fidelis will no longer be able to maintain our commitments within the Empire of Xeilias and will henceforth be withdrawing from that worthy alliance. We wish our friends and family of Xeilias success in all their endeavors.

As a member of Golgotha, I am saddened to see my friends from the Fidelis guild leave the Empire of Xeilias.

However I am also boosted by the joy that my friends have found a home that will support the style of gameplay they want to pursue.

Best of luck to Ozems Vigil and their Chartered Companies supporting them.

Congratulations, Fidelis and Ozem's Vigil!

Goblin Squad Member

Thanks for the kind words, and hello to our new neighbors! Though I'll admit I'm not super familiar with you guys yet, I trust the few interactions I've had and the testimony of my fellow Fidelians, both of which point towards the settlement of Ozem's Vigil being populated by some pretty swell chaps (and ladies, if applicable). I'm hoping that by the time we are in game I'll count many of you as friends. :)

welcome to the settlement

Goblin Squad Member

I think you're reading too much into things. I don't see any drama here. Besides Zac is gone for a few weeks in Florida and I'm quite jelly.

Goblin Squad Member

There's certainly no drama implied by what I said

Goblin Squad Member

I'm going to start some drama if there's no tavern...

Always free to visit The Seraph's Kiss, Tavern of TEO! (location TBD)
