I was wondering, since a sorcerer(and bards) does not need to prepare spells ahead of time, does that mean he does not need the materials for it(if a spell requires them)? I know most of the time the material cost of a spell is ignored, but not always for spells that do require a more expensive reagent.

All sorcerers gain Eschew Materials as a bonus feat at 1st level, so they've no need of material components with a listed cost of less than 1 gold piece. They still require the more expensive materials just like any other caster however.

Keep in mind, any material component that does not have a listed cost is assumed to be in a components pouch. You don't have to track them. Its just if they have a cost that you have to track them. So if you wanna cast any spell that has no cost for the component, you can cast it 100 times without concern so long as you have your component pouch handy.

Or again as a sorcerer for free all day long (so long as you have slots) thanks to that free eschew material feat you got at first level.
