Origins 2010 Game Fair

Hey gang, I am going to be coordinating events at Origins this year on behalf of Mr. Frost. There’s going to be a huge spread of scenarios available at the convention this year. If you can’t find a scenario that you want to play amongst the spread we’re offering, then each slot there are two PFS “Classic” tables where players can pick up any available scenario not already on the schedule. If you still can’t find anything you can play, then you probably should be GMing for us ;-) Speaking of that, I am going to need a whole bunch of GM volunteers!

On average we’ve got 6 tables per slot scheduled. There will be two PFS Classic tables available per slot. I will be tending to the HQ desk so I am asking for seven volunteer GMs per slot. Any level of commitment will be appreciated. If you are interested in GMing please e-mail me off-list. You can reach me at dmiles [at] starems [dot] com. Let me know how many slots you are interested in volunteering for and if you have any preferences—keeping in mind the more flexible you are the easier my job is :)

Origins generously offers the following benefits for GM volunteers:
GM four slots and your convention badge is free (a $60 value).
GM seven slots and you have a choice of a free hotel room for up to four nights (shared with three other volunteers) or you can accept $60 in vouchers.
You may read more about the GM Benefits here.
I will also have some Paizo swag to give away to sweeten the deal.

The deadline to receive GM benefits is May 1st, but I will need to know if you intend to volunteer ahead of that since I will need to get you confirmed with the Origins staff.

Traditionally Origins uses the Con Support website for pre-registration, GM sign-up, ticket sales, etc. However, I haven’t seen anything up on that website yet so just consider this an early call for GMs, with details to follow as they become available.

-Doug Miles

I'll volunteer to run four slots, though I'm going to want to wait till the full convention schedule is posted to know what slots I'll want to volunteer for.

Bump

We are still waiting for Origins to get the show on the road. I just checked Con Support and there's been no activity. I've poked several of the organizers but there's been no movement. I'm confident that everything will work out, but Origins moves slow in comparison to GenCon.

Scarab Sages

I'm still planning on running four but it is hard without a schedule to know when. I think they're not supposed to even have board games up until the 30th, let alone roleplaying games. I registered by mail two months ago and I don't know how thats going to work in connection with online event registration. I guess we'll see.

When will the mods be available to begin preparing for them?

At least by the time they become available for PaizoCon, which goes off a week earlier.

Hey Doug,

I would like to volunteer for all three slots on Thursday and one on Sunday.

I was thinking about volunteering for #s 51 & 52, but I noticed that they are not being released until 6/30. Do you have an in? How will this affect prepping the mods (maps)?

Roger

The Exchange 5/5

Good news! Con Support has finally shown signs of life. Origins is now on the convention list and it appears they are building the events onto it now. Currently it does not appear that you can do any signing up, but I'm enheartened to see the activity.

I am still in dire need of GMs at Origins. I currently have only three stalwart volunteers. Remember folks, a mere 4 slots of GM duty nabs you a free badge (and my graditude). That leaves you with 6 slots to do with whatever you wish. If you are fanatical enough to GM 7 slots you may receive free housing or a voucher (and an extra helping of graditude). I GMed ten slots last year, so I'm not asking for more than I'm willing to give :)

PFS#51 & 52 are not scheduled to be released until 6/30 for the general membership. However, since these scenarios are debuting at PaizoCon (one week before Origins) they will be finished and ready to be distributed for this event in plenty of time. I am confident that Josh will take care of us.

Bump.

I'm also sending along GM support to Doug for the show, so GMs will be well taken care of.

Doug, I can GM 7 slots for Origins. Thursday's 8 am and 7 pm slot, Friday's 8 am and 7 pm slot, Saturday's 8 am and 7 pm slot, and Sunday's 8 am slot. I already have a badge for the full con which I guess can be reimbursed, but I will need the room. Email me back what information you need from me.

I know from last year that they reimburse badges on the day you sign in and pick up your badge. Origins won't do it before the show.

Bump! Let's give Doug some support! I know there are more GMs out there. :-)

Then I'll have to do so when I get there. If it doesn't happen that's OK.

Just saw on the Con support site that Origins is listed. It does show that to get the room you would have to GM 8 slots. Is this the same for Pathfinder scenarios or are we still only required to GM 7?

Derek Boobyer

Before Con Support went up I went by the Origins website which stated 16 hours for a badge and 32 hours for a hotel room. Josh had submitted the PFS events to Origins indicating we would be running 5 hour slots so according to their own rules, 7 slots qualified. Of course, traditionally it has always been 8 slots for the hotel room so I'm not surprised this has happened. I would have cleared this up earlier but my e-mails weren't being returned. I will try to contact them again and see which rule they're operating under.

How does the free room work? Do you pay the room fee and then get reimbursed after you have completed the minimum volunteer schedule? Or do you get the benefit of a free shared room and get back-charged if you renege?

The free room really means 1/4 of a free room. You will be sharing the hotel room with 3 other GMs. The advantage is it is adjacent to the convention center and you're only using it to sleep and shower. I've never taken the hotel room option so I can't really tell you how you & the room are joined together, but I'll find out.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

I attempted to register for my badge. It gives an option to select a GM badge, but asks for an access code. I do not see anything about it in the GM/volunteer documents. Do you have that information or should I just register for a standard full con badge?

Scarab Sages

Hey Doug, are the slots not open yet on Consupport or am I missing them somehow? The only Pathfinder games I see are on Saturday and they are for 29, 30 and 41. These also seem connected with d20 Pro.

d20 Pro is running some Pathfinder Society games as well. Not sure why ConSupport isn't showing our Society games, though ...

The Exchange 5/5

I'm puzzled as well. Bob, I don't know anything about an access code. I believe the Pathfinder Society events that are currently posted (29, 30 and 41) are the ones that d20 Pro will be running, not the ones that you guys will be volunteering for.

Are you still needing GMs? If so, any particular slot?

I am evaluating my avability to attend and would love to pitch in if I can. I realize that the deadline is May 1st. I can email you after work today.

I still need GMs for every slot. I have 6 volunteer GMs so far but they only fill half the slots I need covered for the convention. Some of them have held off committing to slots until Con Support went up. Con Support is now open but the schedule is kinda messed up. I guess the point is, you have your pick of slots right now--but the clock is ticking.

Scarab Sages

Doug, talking it over with the wife, I think I'll volunteer to do the thursday, friday and saturday morning slots and then the thursday 1 pm slot. Assuming of course that I get to get in there and sign up for them before other eager beavers grab the same slot.

Are we actually volunteering for specific mods or are we just going to do it on a who comes determines what we play sort of schedule?

Liberty's Edge

Doug Doug, I just sent you an email.

The Exchange 5/5

OK, thanks to everyone for their patience. I'm working through layers of bureaucracy to try and get answer to my questions and it's not going smooth. Back in February Josh sent GAMA (Origins) the event request for Pathfinder Society and CCed me on the message. After Con Support went live for GM sign-ups our events still were not visible. Tuesday I sent an inquiry to the same address as Josh sent the events to (events@gama.org) and have received no reply as of yet. Yesterday Twilight Knight took the initiative to ask volunteers@gama.org about a GM code and got a reply insinuating that our events had not been received. So I fired off an e-mail to volunteers@gama.org and hopefully they will be more responsive. If I don't get a reply I'll call them direct and get this resolved this afternoon. In the meantime all I can do ask you guys to be patient and keep an eye on your e-mail. I'll keep you in the loop as I learn more.

The Exchange 5/5

I just got off the phone with John Ward from GAMA and he set me straight. First, our events were received and we have the green light. The events are not on Con Support because we didn't ask for them to be on Con Support. I assumed that would be where they'd be, since that's the only way I have interacted with Origins in the past. However, I assumed wrong! The Pathfinder Society events will be available on the Origins website which is where they were submitted. As the organizer, I will be the one handling GM slot assignments so you guys do not need to sign up anywhere else to GM for Pathfinder Society. As for the rewards (free badges & hotel rooms), based on the number of hours of events Josh submitted, we will get a 'package' of benefits that I can distribute to my GMs. So no more worries about a sign-up deadline. That doesn't mean I still don't need more GMs.

The GM Codes have not been sent out yet. The events are not open for sign-up yet, and when they do go open they will be rolled out starting with Boardgames, followed in a few days by Role-Playing Games, and so on. This way Origins hopes to avoid the trainwreck that many of you experienced when you registered for GenCon.

Here's the big question: Do you guys think that not having PFS events posted on Con Support is going to lead to confusion and players missing out on our events?

Scarab Sages

So, just to clarify - all we need to do is give you our schedule of when we want to run? Do you want it emailed to you or is what I posted above enough?

Secondly, I know that I tend to look through the book for what is when more than I look online for specific groups. I don't know how common that is though, especially as this is only my second Origins and my 3rd Convention period.

You can tell me what you want to run but I cannot guarantee you will get your choices. However, volunteering early gives you the best odds to get what you want. E-mailing it to me or posting it are both fine. I am working on a spreadsheet to see where I still lack GM coverage.

And thanks for your insight as a convention attendee.

Scarab Sages

I sent you an email reconfirming the time slots I would like.

Doug Doug wrote:

My friends and I have always downloaded the event catalogs and searched for our games using excel. It is much easier than searching through the online tools. Too often, you have to relaunch the search tools to continue searching or change the parameters. Most of those I have spoken to do the same. However, if there is any way that Origins can add our events to the online tool, it should be done. I am sure that there are many people out there that use it and I would hate for any potential pathfinders to miss out because their search methods differ than mine.

Hey folks, we still have a lot of open GM slots for Origins!

GM Rewards (Badges & Housing) are still available. If you have volunteered AND you have sent me your slot availability, you should have received an e-mail this evening with your assignments. If you have volunteered but you haven't informed me when you'll be available yet, please commit soon. There are still rooms and badges to be claimed. If you wait too long you will end up either GMing five different scenarios over 7 slots or I will ask you to cover HQ while I run a myriad of scenarios.

I really don't expect to see much player interest for the Tier 12 scenarios on the schedule, but GMs should be aware that it is a double-length scenario and counts as two slots.

I did get an e-mail from someone from Australia--which I accidentally must have deleted because I can't find it now. Please resend it, sorry! There are some slots left that I need to fill yet. The challenge is that there are not any identical scenarios left to run, so if you were to GM four slots you would need to prep four different scenarios. If you wish to take up that burden, I will be happy for your services. An alternative would be for you to cover HQ for me while I run Open Play tables. Please send me another e-mail and we can discuss it.

FYI:
Origins announces the opening of Event Registration for Origins Game
Fair 2010. You can begin registering for events at the following
times:

Tabletops – Wednesday, May 26 at Noon Eastern Time
Role-playing – Thursday, May 27 at Noon Eastern Time
All other events – Friday, May 28 at Noon Eastern Time

More detailed information will be posted on the registration page of
the web site before the events go live as this year’s registration
process is significantly different from what you have experienced in
previous years.

Origins Update:

All the Pathfinder Society GMs for Origins have been assigned slots, leaving only the Tier 12 scenarios uncovered. If anyone comes to Origins and wants to play the Eyes of the Ten series I will GM you myself, otherwise I'll be covering HQ & running overflow tables.

All the Pathfinder Society GMs for Origins have been registered for GM badges. Those who qualified for hotel berths have likewise been registered. I contacted GAMA about confirmation on the registrations since I hate those last-minute surprises. They're getting hammered right now because of an IT glitch. Tabletop game registration for players was supposed to go online at noon--and hasn't. Poor devils never should have made a facebook page... Anyways, the folks at GAMA are very responsive when contacted via phone and have reassured me that my valued GMs are going to be taken care of. We just have to wait til the current storm passes.

I will get the GMs their assigned scenarios as soon as they are released. I am sure that the Paizo staffers are in their own crisis mode right now with the oncoming PaizoCon juggernaut--though they're probably more used to it than GAMA. Thanks for everyone's help!

Hey Doug, quick question while I patiently wait for the mods: On Wednesday at the Con, who do we see about our GM tags? Do we need to find you or do we go to the Gathering folks or do we get them at the registration desks.

Last year I got one printed from the registration desk only to find that the Gathering already had one waiting for me so I thought I would try and get it right this year.

I will try and pick them all up on Wednesday so you don't have to wait in any lines. You should have my cell #. Call me when you get in and I'll let you know. This year everything's gone haywire at Origins HQ so I don't want to make any more declarations.
