The count (40, 56, or 80) indicates how many 25mm figures you can store in each box.
I wanna order these but the product description is vary poor. It seams that Paizo doesn't even want to sell these. I have no idea what I would be giving you money for, I mean what exactly I'd be getting. Can you please up date with more info? I'm putting four in my shopping cart but won't place the order till I know what I'm getting.
40 figure capacity, cut out size: 1" x 1", 1 layer
56 figure capacity - cut out size: 1" x 2", 2 layers - (larger figures)
80 figure capacity - cut out size: 1" x 1", 2 layers
The boxes themselves are hard, sturdy, plastic. Each layer of foam consists of three pieces: a thin top pad/cover, the divider, and the bottom. Between the two layers is a piece of heavy cardstock with a loop of ribbon attached to each end. The loop allows for easily lifting the upper layer out of the box to access the lower layer. Since the 40 figure case is only one layer, it obviously won't have this.
I own about 15 of these things and absolutely swear by them. My only complaint is that the divider and bottom of each layer don't come attached to each other. When removing a figure, if some pointy bit catches on the foam, you can pull the whole divider out of place. Nothing a couple spots of white glue can't remedy though.
