Questions about Black Puddings

Rules Questions

I have always wanted to throw a Black Pudding monster at a group and I finally have a chance to do so in a few sessions. However, I need a little help making some decisions about it's ability to split when struck via slashing weapons or piercing weapons.

Quote:

Split (Ex) Slashing and piercing weapons deal no damage to a

black pudding. Instead, the creature splits into two identical
puddings, each with half of the original’s current hit points
(round down). A pudding with 10 hit points or less cannot
be further split and dies if reduced to 0 hit points.

Now my group as far as physical ability goes uses mostly slashing weapons and I am OK in my understanding about that but the other attacks I am curious about.

Natural Bite Attack from a Druid Companion Wolf: I am guessing that probably would hit as a piercing attack but it is also a tearing thing plus I really can't see this small bite dividing a Pudding in half unless it was a smaller divided one.

My Artificer's Hand Cannon:
Yes this is a gun and normally I would say a bullet would be piercing damage but the gun actually fires metal balls that turn into cannon balls. To me a cannon ball is more blunt damage but I could still see it divide the pudding in half do to the shear force. So would it do damage but at the same time split it in half?

Steam Grenades: Everyone in my group has these lovely items and I could see the shrapnel damage as both piercing and slashing so division would occur but what would happen if the pudding swallowed one and it went off? I am thinking that instead of dividing it normally it would actually divide it like mad, it would be like having a grenade go off in jello and it would get every where, am I correct in this thinking?

Either way this will be a fun encounter, at least for me, and it should be memorable however I would like some feedback on this encounter cause I would like to do it justice.

bites are considered B/S/P, since they do both piercing and slashing I would say that they cause a split, but since they deal bludgeoning as well I would say that bite also deals damage at the same time.

Hand Cannon... I would probably rule that a cannonball sized and shaped projectile did Blunt damage ans be done with it, full damage to the pudding.

Can't comment on the steam grenades, other then to look at the damage type listed and rule accordingly.

OK that is good to know especially for the Druid's Wolf, he loves that guy.

I to think that the cannon ball would do full damage but I am wondering if the force would cause it to split.

If you've ever ruled that the cannonballs have punched through something, it would probably tear the pudding and cause a split.

Do they do more damage than a greatclub of a comparable size category (like, large or so)? If so, they might have the penetrative power for their size to cause a split anyway. If not, probably judge it as a greatclub hit and just do damage.

Ya they do the damage of a medium size cannonball which from 7th seas did 3d6 X4 crit for damage. It is pretty nasty when it crits, doesn't happen often, but when it does it is nasty.
